Players are divided on the game's linear, story-driven approach. [1][2][3] Many praise the visuals and atmosphere of 1900s Sicily. [4][5][6] Some find the story predictable and the gameplay outdated. [7][3][8]

The Mafia games were never celebrated for revolutionary gameplay or bustling open worlds, but they were always serviceable. More importantly, they leaned on strong atmosphere and cinematic storytelling to carry the experience. The Old Country fails on every one of those fronts. The gameplay feels aggressively outdated and clunky. Movement is stiff, combat lacks impact, and everything feels so heavily scripted that …

Game of the Year in Wasted Potential That's the unfortunate reality of Mafia Old Country. You can feel the ghost of an amazing game here. The developers built an extremely beautiful open world set in 1900s Italy, complete with stunning scenery and ancient ruins. The first few chapters do a brilliant job of setting the stage, introducing you to unique, powerful NPCs (so many sidequests potential) and countless …

Rating: ★★★★★★★★☆☆ (8/10) Mafia: The Old Country is a rare kind of crime game, one that doesn’t rely on spectacle or modern open world distractions, but instead focuses on storytelling, culture, and atmosphere. Set in the early 1900s in Sicily, Southern Italy, it delivers an incredibly authentic look into the origins of organized crime at a time when poverty, honor, and survival shaped every decision. The story is …

This is NOT a traditional Mafia game. This is more like an interactive movie with stealth and gunplay elements and some light driving. That being said, I completely enjoyed myself while playing it through twice. Just know what you are getting into. It is fun for what it is but not anywhere near worth full price. I would say get it at least 50% off.

The Don Goes Mild It is impossible to please everyone all the time. Mafia: The Old Country is a solid experience but it feels more like a walking simulator with action sequences. Hangar 13 leaned heavily into a linear story approach after the empty open world of Mafia 3. This design choice works for better or for worse. Optional collectibles and dialogue will be enough for some folks to go back and explore, but the …

63% of the 293 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Mafia: The Old Country. The complaint that keeps coming up: linear and restrictive gameplay. Deal-breaker or nitpick?

neutral · AI labelView post →The game is very mediocre, like an interactive story with some combat elements, they removed everything that made the mafia games good, and made it linear, invisible walls, or the go back to the objective zone or insta fail, story was alright and was seen before in different pieces of media, whoever designed the knife fights wasn't thinking straight because those fights were very boring repetitive and very clunky and outdated , if you want to play it i suggest waiting for a deep discount like…

positive · AI labelView post →This is one of the few games that compelled me to write a review and hopefully dissuade others from buying it. While I’m all for new Mafia games, this one ain’t it, chief. To start with the obvious: just like its so-called "predecessor", Mafia 3, this game suffers from major problems. The technical issues are abysmal; to the point where I’m tempted to create a personal list of "deal-breaker" open-world games made with Unreal Engine 5. I shouldn’t need to use performance crutches just to…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Mafia: The Old Country is… fine. Not great, not terrible—just absolutely, unmistakably average. It’s the kind of game that doesn’t do anything wrong, but also doesn’t take a single risk. Everything here feels safe, familiar, and a bit too comfortable for its own good. The story follows exactly the beats you’d expect: loyalty, betrayal, revenge—the usual suspects. There’s nothing inherently bad about it, but it’s so predictable that you could probably outline the entire plot after the first…

neutral · AI labelView post →An enjoyable game let down by a poorly written ending PROS Stunning graphics Well written characters Combat is decent, though not great CONS . Disappointing ending . To many knife fights . occasional random fps drops . Short story, lasting around 11 hours . Purchased weapons are often taken away during missions . Upgrades feel mostly pointless

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great storyline, but ending is sad Graphic is nice Optimization is good (I Have 120-140 fps in 4k ultra settings with DLSS Performance) Cool game, I recommend it
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm going to finish this story because I have completed the other Mafia games...but this ain't it. I will NEVER understand the propensity for SO many developers to go backwards in development of their games. They nailed the world in Mafia 2, they improved the combat and driving, and the overall smoothness and immersion in Mafia 3...and then they made this crap. This game spends SO much time doing menial BS that it's not truly even as long as it's already short playtime would suggest. Stack…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game disappointed me more than anything else. Whenever I pick up one of these story-driven, over-the-shoulder action-adventure titles, I brace myself for the inevitable: hours of characters murmuring about semi-relevant backstory while we trudge in slow motion toward the next scripted trigger. I press a button, maybe something happens, maybe it doesn’t. More often than not I end up staring blankly at the horizon, silently begging the game to just… let me play. I'm just being honest so you…

positive · AI labelView post →Scenery is nice. Single player is extremely linear, offering limited time to explore. Minimal skill required to play. The ending made me want a refund. I've played all the Mafia games and this storyline is the only one that ends with cringe.

positive · AI labelView post →Mafia: The Old Country tells you a story that you're going to experience firsthand, feeling like one more part of the plot with tense moments, memorable stories, and gameplay that won't make you put down the controller for a single moment. It's a reminder of why we fell in love with video games in the first place: not because of complex systems or impressive graphics, but because of their ability to transport us to other worlds and make us feel part of extraordinary stories. Just play it and…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Longtime fan of the Mafia series with the original being a favorite of mine. Unfortunately this game lacks where it matters the most, the gameplay. The developers built a gorgeous and detailed world with a good story, fantastic acting and fantastic characters. Too bad the gameplay is so dull. The shooting and stealth mechanics are as basic as it gets. You're either playing whack a mole shooting enemies behind cover or the guy with a shotgun is charging straight at you. There are many knife…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Copy and pasted story, 10-13hours of gameplay, forced travel(no roaming). Worth 5 dollars at best. It looked good and i thought perhaps we will get something different. Nope we did not... Same story different characters different country and fancy graphics, but you cant really enjoy them when you cant roam freely. It could of been really good but it was a copy paste nightmare..... I wasted 60 dollars for 10 hours of this...
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →gameplay was ok, story as well and a ♥♥♥♥ ending. could have ended better and set up mafia 1
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I usually do not write reviews but I had to say something. For a game with lots of good potential and plenty of cool events, there are some GAPING flaws. 1. Since you give us so little free roam time and the story elements are locked to default gear, why have you even given us the ability to upgrade horses, cars, and weapons? 2. Who the he** wrote the whole ending, it was a poor excuse of painful writing and obvious actions that just dragged on forever. It was not entertaining, it was…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Absolute performance nightmare. The frame gen implementation is so bad that ghosting is unbearable, took me hours to get optiscaler to work but even then that creates a new set of problems. Can't enjoy the game at all to be honest
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In Charlotte for the Bills game today. The city has been taken over by the Mafia. #BillsMafia Go Bills!!🏈
neutral · AI labelView post →Every single mission is the same variation of "stealth, gunfight, knifefight, car chase" in a random order, no variation, no twists. once you notice it you cant unsee it. The characters are cool and intereresting but the moment that you realize "wait, this is a mafia story" you can guess virtually every single thing that happens in the game from virtually half way through. Pick it up on a sale maybe or if you really love mafia stuff.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Glad i didn't waste money on the deluxe edition. The story was so shallow, and predictable. The game play was ok, the fights were slightly less ok. I finished the game and was immediately saddened at how much better this game could have been.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Mafia: The Old Country is a beautiful game. The fact there's no photomode is such a shame
positive · AI labelView post →Quite literally nothing occurs in the first four hours of the game. Like actually nothing. It picks up heavily after that, and I wouldn't mind the slow start if it wasn't literally a third of the entire game. This is not as long as the other Mafia games. The open world is completely empty with basically nothing to do. Go play mafia 1 and 2, the rest can probably be skipped.

Nice VO, music. Story is kinda average, was predictable but didnt predict the ending. Overall fun, get it on sale and enjoy.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's ok. It's by far the worst Mafia game. Bad writing. Annoying gameplay. Stupid dialogues. Unlikeable characters. Art is great. Beatable in 13 hours.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Greatly disappointed, compared to the Mafia Trilogy. This game is not an open world, so if you plan on getting this game plan on playing the campaign several times in order to unlock all the achievements, after completing this game on PS5 I was just so disappointed that I don't even want to finish this game on PC. Get this game when its on sale for less then $15 as that is what this game is worth. I do not recommend this game even if your a fan of the series.

I get what the writers were trying to say: without sacrifice or compromise, no one gets what they want. Fine. Message understood. But Isabella deserved better. Maybe she makes it out, but at what cost? Poor Enzo. The playthrough itself was good. Gameplay is decent, nothing groundbreaking. The story is predictable same old mafia twists, love, betrayal, tragedy very…
