Some players note that the game holds up remarkably well despite its age. [1][2][3]

I have no complaints about the game itself - it’s a masterpiece. Konami, however, completely dropped the ball. They had every resource to deliver a proper native PC port with the basic fixes you’d expect for modern hardware. Instead, what we got is a built-in PS1 emulator that can barely run a modified American version of MGS. To make things worse, you don’t even get access to the emulator’s settings. Without …

Metal Gear Solid is one of the most influential video games ever made. It redefined what storytelling in games could be. It combines stealth gameplay, cinematic presentation, and memorable characters that leave you with an unforgettable experience. The gameplay emphasizes stealth over combat. Avoiding enemies, using gadgets and planning your movements make every encounter feel rewarding. When this game released on …

What are the chances that someone in 2026, playing a game from 1998 for the very first time - a game almost as old as they are - would end up loving it? Especially someone who never owned a PlayStation and didn’t even have the opportunity to play the game until the PC port in 2023. And yet, that’s exactly what happened, I enjoyed this game as if it were completely new. Did I struggle with the terrible PC controls, …

A true masterpiece that still holds up incredibly well after all these years. Metal Gear Solid 1 is one of the most influential games ever made. The storytelling, the cinematic presentation, the tense stealth gameplay, the unforgettable characters and the pure atmosphere of Shadow Moses are pure magic. The codec conversations, the boss fights (especially Psycho Mantis and the final stretch), the twists… this is peak …

Now I know why people love the Metal Gear series I absolutely loved it and I only wish I'd played it when I was younger. The gameplay still holds up surprisingly well the story kept me hooked from start to finish the characters are unforgettable It's easy to see why this game became a classic. P.S. The final boss fight was ♥♥♥♥.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Special thanks to Konami for offering a free weekend for the Master Collection version of Metal Gear Solid 1. I appreciate this collection for making the MGS games available on all platforms, but at least for MGS 1, this has way too many issues for me to want to buy, even at $10. >There was no in-game indication on how to open the Master Collection settings mid-game, I had to Google it (it's pressing both shoulder buttons simultaneously). >16:9 mode just stretches the 4:3 window to fit,…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I never knew about the Metal Gear Solid games until one of my friends gifted me the master collection (THANK YOU DAVID!!!). He recommended the franchise to me and told me how great the games and the stories in the games are. I am almost done playing through MGS1 for the first time and I am absolutely blown away with everything this game has to offer. The story is so incredible, the boss fights are truly challenging, the characters are absolutely phenomenal. This game is amazing on the Steam…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →To get the Big Boss rank in MGS1 you must complete the game on Extreme difficulty in under 3 hours, with 0 continues, 25 or fewer kills, 4 or fewer alerts, 1 or 0 rations used, and no special items Bandana Stealth. The radar must be turned off, which is a requirement for the rank. You can get Big Boss rank easily by playing the game in Japanese There's only one difficulty setting and it's equal to the easy mode of the US version. Makes it much easier to get Big Boss rank.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Can't really recommend this one. Don't get me wrong, the game itself (MGS1) is a masterpiece and it has aged beautifully. It is perfect. But this is just a repackaged ROM running on an emulator. Quality is awful, crackling audio and no image customization. You'd get a better experience by simply running your own ROM of the game on a proper and feature packed emulator of your choice, with better post-processing such as custom scanline filters and whatnot. Not worth the money at all.

A channel called Bhailogkaadda mentioned this game once, and that one mention sent me down a rabbit hole. Searched about it, learned about Kojima and this legendary series he's been building for years. Me and my friend Rohan were probably the only MGS fans in our entire school nobody else even knew who Kojima was lol. Good old DAV school days. We mostly emulated GBA…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good game, bad port for its age, the GOG version offers better controls and features.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It holds up remarkably well in modern day, for a PS1 game this must have been the greatest game ever at the time Except that torture scene which is awful but if you hit shift + tab you can go into steam menu and turn on turbo in controller settings which makes mashing easier. Also if you know the controller trick to the Psycho Mantis bossfight you have to do that in the settings menu instead of physically, that doesn't get explained in game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3770857442 Game is free on Steam this weekend, and I could not even get past the main menu. The fix apparently involves installing the Japanese language DLC, even though I selected English. But Steam does not even show a DLC menu for this version unless you go through even more workarounds. That is not on the player. Konami should not expect customers to hunt down hidden fixes just to launch a game properly. Digital Foundry and plenty of…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →METAL GEAR SOLID — A CLASSIC TRAPPED INSIDE THE WORLD'S MOST CONFIDENT REPACKAGE Metal Gear Solid is still a fantastic game. The problem is that this version seems to expect applause for successfully placing a 1998 PlayStation game on a modern storefront without accidentally setting the building on fire. The game deserves respect. This release deserves a polite nod. You get the original Metal Gear Solid, the first two Metal Gear games, and some extra digital material, which is nice, but the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i went into this blind and it absolutely blew my mind. gameplay is amazing, story is amazing, cutscenes are brilliant. unbelievable that this is even a ps1 game tbh. I lost 2hrs for not saving after the torture scene but i think this is the first time ever in a game i wasn't annoyed i lost progress.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The DNA of Modern Gaming Playing this on the PS5 today brings back the same chills I felt during the PS1 era. Metal Gear Solid isn't just a game; it’s the moment the medium grew up. In 1998, this was a seismic shift in the industry. Hideo Kojima didn't just create a stealth title; he pioneered a cinematic revolution where gameplay and storytelling merged into one seamless experience. You don't just play MGS1; you live it. From breaking the fourth wall to its uncompromising passion for…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What else can you even say about this instant classic, Hearing David Hayter as Snake again instead of Kiefer Sutherland is just so damn good. The game is packed with unforgettable dialogue, incredible exposition, and a genuine love letter to 80s action cinema. Snake being heavily inspired by Escape from New York gives him so much more aura, and once you know the influence, you can see it in almost every scene. It's honestly insane how well this game still holds up. The stealth mechanics were…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Use the MGSM2Fix mod. Yes, Konami should have done a better job porting, but welcome to PC gaming. Outside of that, game is great. Brings back so many memories of playing the original and why I fell in love with this series. So glad we can finally play these on modern hardware, can't wait for a remaster, and hopefully a remaster of MGS2 and MGS4.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The problem with Metal Gear Solid is you don't play it for years and forget just how well made it is. Then you boot it up years and years and years later only to realize you still remember the dialog, the sounds, the gameplay. It sticks with you like nothing else and infuses itself into your DNA. As much as MGS2 is my favorite and MGS3 is one of the more refined games to exist, they don't exist without MGS1. MGS1 is the reason why MGS2 is so good, and thus you really have to play this game…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played Death Stranding last year and completely fell in love with the camp and cool-factor of Kojima's work. I recently played MGS: Delta and absolutely was enthralled with this world. It turns out that I have been missing out. I implore anyone thinking about getting into the series to definitely try it out, I am only a few hours into the game but already in love. It doesn't even feel like an "old" game! It was definitely way, way ahead of it's time.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game but i can't excuse what they did with this port. Who came up with an idea to default to the verison that is worse in every way possible and lock the superior one behind language pack? PAL version with recent max resolution update drops the FPS at every instance of stealth camo being used (making two bosses almost unplayable due to it being used like 10 times a minute).
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →stealth game where man swhoots long hair man because he hates him and he has nukes.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →special game, with all its frustration i love it as it is except for the torture room, my thumb will forever remember that pain...
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Amazing game but MGS 1 freezes near the end during Liquids monologue. Game cannot be finished.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I never played this when it was new, but I kind of can't believe it was originally released in 1998. Everything about it- from the obtuse camera limitations, awkward combat, valid critiques of the military industrial complex and breakdown of genre conventions- feels like an indie game released a couple years ago made by five guys that wins a bunch of awards but never finds commercial success. Kojima really is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ auteur lol Don't try to do all the VR missions for the achievement though,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fantastic game, one of the best games I've ever played. But this port is subpar at best. "Max Resolution" setting will cause stutters in boss fights and action heavy moments (almost 30 y/o game btw). Fullscreen mode simply stretches the screen out instead of outputting a proper native resolution image. besides making the Psychomantis fight a bit easier to figure out and beat on PC, this port is an inferior way to play the game. I would highly recommend watching a tutorial and emulating the game…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A classic, there might be better ways to experience this title but I enjoyed it as a true experience of how Kojima is a master of game design. Ohh and the story is an absolute crazy wild ride.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's not that the game's bad, I really like the game and it's quite fun but it keeps freezing and crashing on my machine
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I cannot fathom how much ambition Kojima had, while creating this game. The cinematic cutscenes, and brilliant dialogue, and the crazy plotting of this game remains a masterpiece, even in this master collection. The frames may be locked at 30, but the graphics improved impressively and the gameplay isn't as flawed as it was on the PlayStation 1. The Collection on Steam is worth putting an investment forwards, I highly recommend.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →People who are region/IP blocked, if you want to play this game, you need to disable your internet connection first before launching the game. Once you do and you see the main menu, you can enable it again. It's sad that Konami is parasitizing on the legacy of the past without offering anything new. Obviously its a cash grab as most ports are but I think it gives enough content to not go down as a waste of money. But overall not a bad way to experience these sensational games in the current day
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A timeless classic. It’s honestly crazy how far ahead of its time Metal Gear Solid was. When you consider that the game came out in 1998, it becomes even more impressive how well so much of it still holds up today. Snake is an incredibly strong protagonist and the supporting cast has a surprising amount of depth as well. Every character feels important and has their own distinct personality. The story completely pulled me in from start to finish. Especially towards the end the game becomes…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Metal gear solid 1, Amazing game, absolute cinema, Kojima, I love you (what? remove that) he's the focking goat, This game is an absolute masterpiece. The level design is very well implemented and was very advanced for its time. Despite the graphics being a bit dated for this generation, you can adjust it to the highest quality setting, which gives you a version with better textures and higher resolution. This game blew my snake solid. Oh, ♥♥♥♥, I'm exaggerating about such a masterpiece. I…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this game is a k-drama about nuclear arms masquerading as a stealth game. mmmmm pretty good.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a terrible port. Even after patches, it still freezes during cutscenes. No amount of adjusting graphics settings, and Windows Compatibility mode is able to overcome this bug. Do not buy. Get the port from g o g . c o m instead.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If the retro graphics is a deal breaker, you can turn them up in settings to ps2-3 visuals, however polygons and textures are definitely ps1 era I was surprised of how good it is The pacing, music, ambiance, characters, voice acting, animations, wide arsenal at your disposal (once found/unlocked) are all good. It suffers from the difficult alert system that blocks your radar and enemies infinitely spawns and easily detect you. Personal thoughts / Notes I started the Metal Gear Franchise about…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →MGS1 is a masterpiece that deserves better than this port. This version of Metal Gear Solid is a blurry, wobbly mess due to bad Playstation 1 emulation that needlessly takes 10gb of disc space because they give you 2 regional versions of the base game and three regional versions of the VR Disc as a lazy solution to language options (yet you may need to download additional language packs to access some of these versions). TLDR: Grab the GOG version instead, it is better in every way.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →2nd best metal gear solid game just next to mgs 2 . One of my favs of all time . Good to see Konami actually working on the MGS again. Great game , even being 25+ year old this is still better than many new released AAA games !!!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the best experiences ever, where the only negative aspect about it that the gameplay is made with 1998 in mind. ps. Konami please make a good remaster for the solid snake games.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An absolute masterpiece of cinematic stealth action where sneaking through Shadow Moses, dodging guards, and taking down iconic bosses never gets old. Although, the PC port is bare-bones and definitely could have been much better with proper settings and updates, but underneath the rough technical stuff lies an incredible game that every fan should experience.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I took advantage from the Free Weekend with my first play through and completed MGS1. I never had a PlayStation or Xbox and I finally played MSG1 that I've been hearing so much rave about for decades and it delivers! To be honest I held back using emulators and playing on GOG because I wanted to play through 1 to 5 and experience the complete game/story on PC. I hear rumors about MGS1 remake is being considered but I don't think I can wait any longer. I'm not going to focus much on the port…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good, but froze on cutscene after metal gear rex fight multiple times at the same spot so i was not able to finish the game
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Oh..where to start i don't even know so many memories i have with this masterpiece game.Back in 2000s i and my brother were playing this game on PS1 haha good old days.I wish they bring the "Twin Snakes" which is remastered version of this one.The characters, story and mechanics were the best for its time and so much a head of its time as well when you compare to other games back in 1998.The game will have the best place in my heart forever.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game was one big learning curve I will admit that. Don't get me wrong I loved the story, the characters, and of course the funny banter, but I will admit the gameplay did show its age. I just am not a fan of fixed camera angles so this game was extremely difficult for me to navigate the first 7 hours but afterwards I got the hang of it. Overall, I do like this game would love for this game to get a remaster some time soon.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →MGS is a masterpiece and is always one of my favorite games of all time since I was a kid playing PS1, beating it hundreds of times without feeling burnt out, and man, I was so glad that it came to Steam at last with achievements. The port is fine but disappointing since it doesn't run above 30fps (US ver.) / 25fps (EU ver.) even though the old PC port could run at 60fps. I understand it's just an emulated port, but it could be better. If you are interested in MGS or played it before and want…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is the first Metal Gear Solid game I've ever played, and it is very unique. It's an experience that everyone needs to try at least once. The game doesn't really hold your hand unless you ask for it. The radio frequency is difficult at first, and you will try and fail countless times. But once you get through it you appreciate it more. 5/5 would recommend playing at least once. Worked great with my wired xbox one/series x/s compatable controller. NOTE: To pause the game, press the pause…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →thanks for the free trial but like its kind of a lazy port.... just emulate the original
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →honestly very clunky and at times frustrating, but i still had a lot of fun and the story just keeps twisting around its wild. no so bad once you get the hang of things, shoutout psychomantis
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Do you think smiles can bloom even on a battlefield?
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the worst games I have ever played. The controls seem like they weren't even made by a human. Takes so much effort and counterintuitive thinking just to do a single sliver of damage, if the game even wants to register it. The level design is boring and half the missions or fights require you to know ambiguous information to beat it. Boss fights are spamming the same repetitive strategy for 10 mins straight, if some bs happens in the fight, which is 7/10 times, you end up losing and have…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I looked it up and apparently you have to go into the game properties in Steam and enable the "METAL GEAR SOLID - Master Collection Version European Pack" DLC to have the European voices, even though the Steam store page says they're not there
neutral · AI labelView post →I wanted to get into MGS, and it started out ok, but i would get random frequent crashes so it made me quit, now im switching to Duckstation emulator.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For what was called the greatest game ever made at the time it came out (1998) i can see why, how this game did what it did, on the PS1 mind you. Is bizzare this games footprint lies in modern gaming to this day.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An interesting glimpse into the past. This game's story feels compelling, and its design is unique. Swapping controller ports to beat a boss or checking the game's retail box to find out the CODEC frequency are ingenious ways of interacting with the player. However, this feeling can't be properly replicated now. Alas, the camera angles and aiming can be frustrating at times.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →MGS 1 is a really unique and fun game. For the time it released in 1998, I don't think any game really came close to being cinematic and having any of the unique mechanics that this game had. I played this after I Played MGS 3 and MGS 5 so game play is not as smooth, but is very cool to see how it evolved in later games. The story is Honestly more interesting then most games now a days and has a lot of very memorable characters. Overall, Just as good as people have always said it is.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you're new to the Metal Gear Solid series, I recommend this version to start the series. It ran flawlessly on my PC with the new update. That said, the game does show its age in certain areas, most noticeably during the Sniper Wolf boss fight, which can feel a bit clunky and downright frustrating. Some of the older mechanics take a little patience to get used to. However, if you can look past the dated elements, it’s an incredibly rewarding game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is truly amazing despite it was released in 1998 , what really stood out to me was the storytelling. I didn’t expect to get this pulled in just through conversations, but the dialogue between Solid Snake and the other characters felt real and emotional. It wasn’t just there to explain things, it actually made me care about what was happening. This game deserves a remake , I hope Konami does that soon. I guess I am really invested in this MGS series.
