What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 187 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (1,205 of 1,575 positive).
Players praise the game for capturing the run-and-gun feel of the series in a tactical format. [1][2][3] Some reviewers find the game repetitive due to limited areas, enemies, and bosses. [4][5][6] Several players note the game rewards aggressive movement and has a steep learning curve. [7][8][9]

For a roguelite it sadly lacks variety. The same bosses over and over, you'd think each stage would at least have 2 different bosses, but no only 1, meaning that every run ends up feeling the same. You also need to play through the same 4 repeated areas for the final boss, repeating the same mission types. For a tactics game, it heavily punishes you for taking a defensive approach, tactics games are about taking …

Creating a strategy over multiple turns is impossible in this "strategy game". Instead the way to win is to run as far as you can each turn to gain defense bonuses and just pray the game doesn't spawn new enemies next to you. It tries to copy Into the Breach but has none of the deep strategy options of that game. The UI is confusing and the mechanics are not explained well. Also experienced game breaking bugs like …

Okay, hear me out. I don't normally play tactic games. I have never touched Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy Tactics, ect. But this game is making me want to expand into playing those games now. This game is easy to learn, but hard to master. Now here comes to scary part. YOU HAVE TO READ!!! I know its a scary thought, but once you actually read how everything works, it just clicks. Once you become a big boy/girl of a …

Arcade Run and Gun perfectly adapted to a turned based tactical RPG? Well, yes! It’s brilliant. It channels INTO THE BREACH to adapt the fast paced action into a combat system that rewards movement and team work. I’ve completed the True Ending and unlocked all 9 characters, but there’s still sooooooooo much more to unlock and play with. I’m in love.

The game is really really good, once you get the idea on how it works (and thats whee I guess most people quit, because people want it to play like the OTHER games in the genre, fail, then quit) The thing is, it works differently from other Turn based combat games out there, because here the more you move, the more powerful you get and the most defense you get, which for veterans of X-Com or similar games, might …

66% of the 187 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Metal Slug Tactics. The complaint that keeps coming up: repetitive with only four areas and limited enemy variety. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Metal Slug Tactics received "generally favorable" reviews from critics, according to the review aggregator website Metacritic. OpenCritic determined that 68% of critics recommended the game. Charlie Wacholz from IGN praised Metal Slug Tactics for its faithful adaptation, impressive pixel art, and engaging soundtrack. He noted that while the movement-focused gameplay and mechanics were strong, bugs and quality-of-life issues hindered the experience. Despite this, the game brought innovative elements to the tactics genre. Likewise, Abbie Stone from GamesRadar+ commended Metal Slug Tactics for its engaging gameplay and art style but noted that limited tutorials and technical issues, including…

positive · AI labelView post →Thank you to the various review outlets for praising "Metal Slug Tactics" OST! I'm humbled, and it makes me feel like I brought something of value to a table of very talented, passionate people. In fact, thank you for mentioning music at all, which I maintain is part of a complete game review ♥️🎵

neutral · AI labelView post →If ever there was a game that steamrolled you with information and then presented you with the first ever mission that has 4 VIP targets in cover with 6 knife-wielding maniacs, who get reinforcements every turn, and you're supposed to kill the VIPs only, but in 4 turns (to get extra XP), only for you to die in 3 turns, because you get attacked for a combined 10 damage each turn, no matter how far you move or dodge, while also having to somehow line up your three characters to make them do…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Metal Slug Tactics is the kind of game I would give a finger to work on it, the pixel art is perfect, the gameplay takes some time to get used to, probably the most different turn based tactical game I played in how it expect the players to play, but it's super fun once you understand.
positive · AI labelView post →the new patch for Metal Slug Tactics seemed to have fixed quite a bit of the game breaking glitches which is nice, along with QoL things like better readability in some of the text. neutral · AI labelView post →So my updated opinion on Metal Slug Tactics: Absolutely incredible game in many ways. Lots of cool interactions and interesting decisions. Incredibly complicated turns means I might not keep playing it. The final mission of my first campaign took over 20 minutes. The enemies did not get a turn.
neutral · AI labelView post →As a tactics game, this one's weird. Units sit somewhere in between general purpose and specialists, meaning they're often efficient at only one very inflexible method of play. The missions themselves are kinda repetitive, and since you have so few choices of units, you wind up not getting too much variety in your tactics.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Repetitive, only four maps/areas and the amount of enemies not that large. Hopefully they extend the main campaign and add more enemies and areas.

neutral · AI labelView post →I personally disliked this game. While it has the unique style of Metal Slug...it's nothing like what I expected. I've been a big fan of FFT and other tactics games. However, this is NOTHING like those. It really punishes you for taking your time and playing in a slow manner. Some players may enjoy that style of game but unfortunately it wasn't for me. If you like the idea of a fast paced FFT then you may like this. If you dislike a game for punishing you for not moving constantly then…

neutral · AI labelView post →Ok, i bought this game on release and played plenty so i can give a review, i actually held on for a time, because i thought the devs would at least fix some of my worries, but enough time has passed and they never fixed anything so here it goes: the game itself its not bad at all, you quickly understand what its trying to do and how it plays, you suddenly become good enough to exploit the strenght of the characters and up the difficulty. but all of this is ruined by one thing, BUGS, there…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not a fan, love roguelites/likes. Too much uncontrollable RNG for a roguelike. Which is sad because this game feels like it could have been an amazing roguelite. You can't have a random area spawn, that is literally unbeatable. And be like, yeah it's rare for that to happen. Roguelikes should always be winnable with skill or decisions. Not 'we spawned too many guys and a randomly generated timed win condition, guess you got unlucky because both are not possible'.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Eri, Trevor and Leona might be my favorite team composition on Metal Slug Tactics. I do hope they fix the bugs in the game asap because it's really fun

neutral · AI labelView post →I finally found some time for Metal Slug Tactics. It works for this Metal Slug fan! The focus on keeping moving is a neat reworking of the classic Metal Slug gameplay, and the application of a punishing arcade structure really brings the Slug vibe. The team clearly know the Metal Slug universe too.
positive · AI labelView post →Wish I could recommend this, because it nailed the metal slug vibe in some ways. The problem is basically that this is a game where the bones are good, but then there isn't much content to make use of them. -Alternate loadouts and mods are very low impact and boring -Every run is very samey. I know people say this about roguelikes a lot, but this one is the worst i've played in that regard. There are only 4 areas, and after your first run you'll have seen every enemy, mission, and boss…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As always, the pixel art for Metal Slug games is great, nostalgic, and fun. Sadly, as a tactics game, this one is clunky. The controls feel awkward and unresponsive. The UI doesn't really help clarify what's happening or going to happen when we choose things without lots of reading. A lot of this info is clearly conveyed much better in other games from decades ago with lower budgets. It's also quite difficult right from the start. I realize these games have always been token-takers since my…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was sold the moment I saw Metal Slug Tactics. The game looks fantastic and I love that my KOF addiction is paying off by including the Ikari Warriors. I’ve heard it’s pretty challenging too.
positive · AI labelView post →Puzzle game hiding as a tactical game. All of the components are high quality, but the game play is that of a puzzle game. There is no room for sub-par turns, no time for learning, and all in all it is tedious and not fun.

As you can imagine, adapting a legendary run-and-gun into a roguelite tactical RPG came with many unique challenges. Discover what design decisions we took to recreate METAL SLUG’s fast-paced action in turn-based form, and how we translated its iconic pixel art into an isometric view:
neutral · AI labelView post →I've tried liking the game but it's just mediocre at best. Runs feel the same, yes, you can choose between different characters in your team, however the 4 playable areas never changes. In higher difficulties new enemies can appear, not only stronger versions but actual new ones like tanks or gatling gun enemies, but they don't change the gameplay too much and bosses will always be the same, no new alternative versions nor new attacks. Focusing on the playable characters you can choose a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun game, but a bit repetitive and quite buggy. Sometimes buffs disappear after you reset the movement, AoE patterns that were already in the ground change and just now I got a second wave of 0 enemies in a boss fight. Worth it on discount, but not on full price.

neutral · AI labelView post →The game is really nice and well designed but gets boring really soon, terribly repetitive and bugs don't let you progress further in the game. Crashes often both on my gaming laptop and on my Steam deck lcd version. Same problems with the switch version. The developer just abandoned the game, seems like a beta version instead of a release product.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So I'm a big Fire Emblem and XCOM player, I really enjoy SRPG-like experiences. This game had two things that instantly turned me off of it. - Instead of careful positioning and using cover, you have to run as far around the map as you can to accumulate "dodge" points. Something just doesn't sit right with me, having my best commando standing out in the open doing somersaults to avoid incoming fire. I'm sure that's part of the style here, I just really didn't like it. - Unclear Instructions:…

neutral · AI labelView post →Ehhh.... From Audio-Video perspective the game is 10/10. But the gameplay is just not fun for me. At a first glance you expect tactical puzzle of positioning and maximizing damage. And you think about games like X-COM, Pathway, Gears Tactics, Into The Breach. Right? Unfortunately it is more like: Mission start: - here is the small place you deploy into - you have 3 rounds to kill The Objective thingy - secondary objective: kill 4 enemy units in one turn with only 3 atacks you have. You…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is alot of fun but its very short, and you have to replay the same 4 areas over and over to unlock everything with kind makes it a pain. To get Leona you have to pretty much unlock all other characters but by the time you get her i dont wanna play the game anymore.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →::EDIT:: I appreciate the comments pointing out that this game is, in fact, a rouge-like. In what little defense I have, I do feel like the game does a poor job of presenting itself as one... in trailers, promotions, and tags. And while I do understand that this a rouge-like tactical RPG, I really don't have any interest in playing a rouge-like tactical RPG. While I know this will do nothing more than gain me more clown awards, I'm still leaving it negative, not because of my original…

neutral · AI labelView post →So far my Metal Slug Tactics evaluation: Very fun, but also easily the most complicated turns of any turn-based strategy game I've ever played with this scale of units.
neutral · AI labelView post →I've been completely out of the loop on most game news but why did no one tell me that Metal Slug Tactics released today?!? Fio Nation, baby!
neutral · AI labelView post →Absolutely awful. I have no idea why this game's rating is so high. Even the first mission has you outnumbered 3:1 by units that are in no way inferior to your own. Upgrades when leveling characters are random and reset when you die. Weapons only fire in straight lines and can be blocked by waist high obstacles. Destroy the convoy missions require you to kill a unit with massive HP while dodging 15 normal enemies. There is nothing good about this game other than the Metal Slug branding.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just got the true ending in the highest difficulty. Made it harder for myself with Ralf being the only survivor and had a blast. Although not every boss is in the game from the other metal slug games, it was kept challenging if you aren't prepared and thorough with your planning. I hope that they'll add new stages like the underwater levels to see some new mechanics. Maybe zombies being included as well as aliens. There's tons of potential content that can be added if ever possible.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was skeptical at first. The idea of having a Metal Slug game being a tactical roguelite instead of a fast-paced bullet hell felt weird to me (I have seen MS Attack and Defense on mobile but it didn't click with me).
