Generally speaking, this is an incredibly unique take on the factory genre, though it shares some conceptual similarities with Gleba from Factorio: Space Age. For what is supposed to be a finished game, this is seriously lacking in the QoL department. No copy and paste in a 2024 building / automation game ? What ? The whole building rotation / placement thing makes building anything extremely tedious. Another game where it is clear the developers do not play their game. It's unfortunate, as the idea and art work are really compelling, but mechanically, it fails on so many levels and ends up a tedious, repetitive mess.

If you're looking for kickass but often underlit games, I can recommend looking at game award nominations from different nations and regions. There's always something fun and innovative This year's Dutch Game Awards has Grunn, Microtopia and RiftRiff as best game nomination. All very indie & great!

I tried it. Three times infact. I kinda got it but it dint click with me. It just feels bad for me to have your units have a lifecycle as a manageable resource as if the crafting chain is not bad enough. Just feels like putting rocks in my shoes. This game has some interesting mechanics, but it's hard to call it a factory game when you can't truly automate production. There's no meaningful long-range logistics system, so once you expand beyond the nearby islands, outside of catapult range, progression starts to feel like it hits a wall. By the mid to late game, *Microtopia* stops feeling like a factory builder and starts feeling like a micromanagement simulator. The main problem is the combination of small, finite resource deposits…

I have over 300 hours in on this, but unfortunately I can't say I've really enjoyed it. It's not that it's a *bad* game, but it has a lot of petty quality-of-life issues that suck the fun out of it. 1. Ability to replicate building and path setups. 2. All the tech tree nodes are disconnected before you've researched them, making it very difficult to know what techs are dependent on what other techs. 3. The game seriously needs a way to look up what resources are needed for each recipe. All…

The 1.1 update is a huge improvement. Although I thought the game had a lot of potential, I put it on the back burner after my initial play-through because it needed some real QoL improvements. The 1.1 update addresses almost every major gripe I had about this game. The blueprint implementation is good. While I wish it was not tile dependent, I understand why that would be a difficult ask. It is still 1000x better than before. Bonus points for implementing Steam Workshop blueprint sharing. The…

This game was a lot of fun at first. Very cool theme and you get that automation fix. Pretty open ended on how to setup your factory. At first its all about efficiency and resource optimization, which was a lot of fun. However this soon devolved into processes that forced inefficiency. It really turned into a slog. The other islands are just annoying for the lack of logistics between them. You must have a flying ant move stuff around and it takes forever to do anything at scale that way.…

Insanely addictive. The one big issue is the lack of explanation, the help pages become useless pretty quickly. I went back and forth between thumbs up and thumbs down for this, but ultimately I think it needs some work before I reconsider. The obvious comparison to make is between this game and Factorio, which are both giant automation/logistics puzzles. If you haven't played Factorio, you should buy that game instead, full stop. If you have played it, read on. The big innovation this game brings over Factorio is that your automated worker ants have a limited lifespan, which changes how you think…

This is a hesitant recommendation. Microtopia has a really good clever mechanic (trails, and gates, and lifespans) that's been executed very well, and synergizes very well, but the game is not for everyone. On the good side, it feels a fair bit different from other factory games. Workers have a limited lifespan and are also part of getting more advanced workers. Recycling workers for further upgrades and back into raw materials is a huge part of the game, and that's pretty cool. On the…

I really want to recommend this game, because I genuinely have had some fun with it. But I've also forced myself to do some stuff, a lot of stuff, to try and progress until I've now broken and don't want to finish the last 10% or so of the game. The logic trails and living "conveyors" that are your ants are generally really well done and an intersting twist on the genre. It's immensely satisfying to build out a main loop of ants, bug fix it (ha) and add some off routes for your production to…

An automation strategy game centered around mechanical ants that perform tasks, build systems, and eventually break apart, creating a unique temporary-worker production loop. I play and enjoy a lot of resource/logistics/manufacturing games. Microtopia is unique. It is much more complicated, strategic and difficult -- and that's the draw for me. The basics in the early game are simple enough but as you continue to advance the challenges escalate. I also like that there are no 'bad guys' to defend against. I enjoyed most progression until the second tier of research. While I think some folks would enjoy the tedium, I found the interface and pathing tools to fall short of what would have kept me in this game. At $10, this game would be a good value for that first portion of content. And maybe someone will make a mod that helps out the ui or cheapens the second tier of research so it's not such a mess trying to arrange. I honestly really enjoyed this game. I came from dyson sphere program, so finding an automation game where resources are limited and a bunch of different worlds can be explored, i fell in love. Its cool to not have conveyor belts and have them replaced by ant trails (I think of them as pheremone trails), which is a really cool concept. They seem to be getting more popular. More new games are coming out, which is great, but I also think the formula is getting a little bit stale. "A Brilliant but Frustrating Logistics Challenge" Microtopia is an incredibly deep and rewarding logistics game… but getting beyond mid‑game feels almost impossible without outside help. Microtopia is a high recommend for automation fans, it's a very unique take on the genre with it's free-form "anything can be anywhere and changed at any time" gameplay however at around the 10-15 hour mark you'll unlock parts of the tech tree that enable and reveal how much will need to be micro-managed and it quickly feels overwhelming (or exciting, depending on the person I suppose!). I owe both of us an apology. Also it really falls short of the mark as a jokey explanation. The two best parts of the game for me: Caste and lifecycle management generally matters more than anything else, and there are different approaches to solve it. The idea of pheromone trails is brilliant. Designing “circuits” for your ants to follow, setting up logic gates to filter and redirect them, it’s both fun and surprisingly educational. Hate games that purposefully inconvenience you as much as possible This is one of those games , past the initial phase you want to get stuck into factory building ,but you can't Scaling production is pointless , because you need to find resources on other lands , you can't advance , because you're locked by Gyne points , to get gyne points you need loads of ants and 2nd Island resources. Ok Fair enough Only you can't easily mine or transport resources , until you get a bridge ...ok fair…

A nice change to the factory game genre. as you have limited antis with limited life spans the emphasis is more on optimization than just growth. The one negative note is that the tech tree get's stupidly grindy towards the end. I used cheats as there was no way I was watching the hive do busy work for 1000 hours just to finish the last couple things. Would love some more gates like a stockpile gate for batteries.

Fun unique twist on the automation genre. Instead of conveyor belts you've got ants.

Addicting, great progression tree, good logic, and just a well made game. If they come out with an expansion or open the workshop to modders.. ill be there. This is a game that has captured my interest and my mind like nothing has in quite awhile. Please keep working on this and expand it with different species, game modes, and the like. Great Job!
