What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 200 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Overwhelmingly Positive (22,030 of 22,986 positive).
Many players compare Monster Train favorably to Slay the Spire, praising its added depth and unique mechanics. [1][2][3] Some reviewers note the game is fun but has issues like repetitive enemies and a long meta progression. [4][5][6] A few players find the game less engaging or too easy compared to other deckbuilders. [7][8][6]

It's OK. Pretty braindead, to be honest. I mostly played it while I was too hungover to think. Music was fine, one or two songs were memorable, the rest are what is best described as "serviceable." I also thought the aesthetics of the game were really dumb, which didn't help my impression of it. The gameplay can give you this sense that you're doing something at first, but after a while you realize that your …

There is something so perfect and magical about this game. Slay the Spire gets a lot of credit, but I believe Monster Train's added placement/level mechanics adds so much to the genre.

After spending over 200 hours and grinding out 100% of the achievements, I have a deep appreciation for this game. It is truly the only deck-builder since Slay the Spire that managed to keep me hooked for so long. There is a profound satisfaction in building powerful units and crafting a deck lethal enough to slaughter angels and reclaim Hell. The Good: - Incredible tactical depth and rewarding unit synergies. - A …

Monster train 1 can't be called perfect game, even great one, it is indeed fiiles with many cards with different mechanics, good visuals and pleaseant music, but at the same time it lashes at you with catastrophicslly low roster of enemies, outrageously long meta progression and nevertheless limited number of combinations, which leads to limited unusual gameplay situations. It is good game, it's true, but nothing …

Monster Train is a great roguelike deck builder game. Honestly besides Slay the Spire, probably the best one out there. It is challenging, addictive, and more importantly fun to play. It gives me the same feeling as Slay the Spire. Unlocking everything and winning with every character on covenant 25 was a great journey. I am glad I tried this game out and will definitely buy Monster Train 2 very soon!

88% of the 200 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Monster Train. The complaint that keeps coming up: low roster of enemies and limited combinations. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
According to review aggregator website Metacritic, Monster Train received "generally favorable reviews". Dan Stapleton of IGN wrote that the game is "a ticket to dozens – if not hundreds – of hours of challenging and surprising roguelike deckbuilding runs, thanks in large part to its mechanically diverse set of decks and the way they interact with each other when combined in different ways", and in his verdict, scored the game 9/10. Cody Peterson from Screen Rant wrote "Monster Train is an enjoyable deck building roguelike game that manages to reinvent both genres with some interesting new game mechanics", giving the game a 4 out of 5 star rating. The game was nominated to IGN Best of 2020…

positive · AI labelView post →Genuinely think what @shinyshoegames.bsky.social achieved with Monster Train 2 is nothing short of phenomenal. To create five whole new factions that not only have their own unique synergies with each other, but with all the factions from the first game? A masterclass in deckbuilder balancing.

positive · AI labelView post →Man, I wanna talk SPOILERS for a damn roguelike card builder. It wasn't even really story related, Monster Train 2 just did something I didn't expect and it gave me those warm and fuzzy feelings that I didn't think a card game could give
positive · AI labelView post →Now that I've played two runs of Monster Train 2, I can safely say that it has the juice. I honestly thought Monster Train 1 was a near-perfect game, and it turns out I was wrong, because the sequel adds onto and improves almost every feature & mechanic. Also you can play as banker dragons.

neutral · AI labelView post →To clarify, it's not about whether I think StS is a better/worse game than MT/2, but rather more like "when I am playing Monster Train, I never think 'I would rather be playing Slay the Spire', when I am in a Monster Train mood I am not in a Slay the Spire mood". The question/difference is clear!

neutral · AI labelView post →Being a roguelite deckbuilder, it is very similar to Slay the Spire in gameplay. But unlike StS where several less than perfect choices can easily ruin your run, Monster Train focuses on forging yourself into an unstoppable powerhouse. The interesting concept of mixing two clans creates multitudes of unique synergies. Game-breaking combinations exist in droves and it is up to you to experiment and discover them. This game is not as tightly balanced than StS, with many runs highly dependent on…
