What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 161 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (6,200 of 6,739 positive).
Players praise the game's addictive sandbox gameplay and medieval atmosphere despite its dated graphics. [1][2][3] Many reviewers note that Mount & Blade: Warband is a superior version, making the original obsolete. [4][5][6] Some players still find charm in the original's simplicity and unique modding community. [7][8][9]

This game isn't "bad", it's just obsolete. Frankly, it should've been delisted and made free for Warband owners. There is no reason to play it (especially in 2025), just skip directly to Warband or Mount&Blade II.
- [1]
Behind the shabby graphics and clumsy combat is a game that quietly devours whole weekends. At first it feels like a physics toy where a rider moves around on horseback with a lance, and then it becomes clear the real story is the wars, betrayals, and raids set in motion within it.

Mount & Blade is one of those games that grabs you and doesn’t let go. You start off broke, alone, and getting bullied by bandits — and before you know it, you’re leading a massive army, taking castles, and deciding the fate of entire kingdoms.

The game was way better than i anticipated. I played lot's of Warband and Bannerlord, but this is different. No overwhelming, unneeded features present, different map, a bit different factions, quirky animations, absurd simplicity. The OG Mount & Blade has the vibe that other MB's Don't, in my most humble opinion. As if it is the memory that isn't mine.

★ ★ ★ ★ ☆ (4) / 5 Mount & Blade never looked amazing, even when it first dropped, but man, it had that atmosphere. The gameplay, the freedom, the chaos of large battles, it just pulled you in. What really made it shine was the modding scene. From Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, there was something for everyone. So many good times. That said, in 2025, it’s hard to recommend the original unless you’re feeling super …

81% of the 161 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Mount & Blade. The complaint that keeps coming up: obsolete due to Warband's improvements. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Mount & Blade received a score of 72 out of 100 based on 28 critic reviews according to the review aggregation website Metacritic. Reviewers acknowledged the game's potential, but also said it suffers from poor production values. GameSpot concluded that the game "feels more underdeveloped than it does flat-out bad", and Eurogamer made a similar review, saying that Mount & Blade has "foundations [...] for something really quite special, but in its current state the game is nowhere close to delivering on its promises". Beyond the combat, little of the game was praised by most reviewers. IGN in contrast, praised the game, stating, "Mount & Blade may be the best game about medieval life ever…

I'll always remember their photos posted on TW forums, of her husband in pyjamas with his feet on the desk and her smiling. I thought it was so cool two people could just make a game.

Or Sid Meier's Pirates, but spaceships instead of pirate ships. Definitely one of those "I'll just make one more quick cargo run..." type of games. This update looks great. In additional to new strategy options through diplomacy, they're also tweaking how ships handle.

neutral · AI labelView post →This is part of why I enjoy checking these games, they come from a very different "canon" and pool of references. It takes a while, but you can see the lineages. And it's not just Chinese-only stuff. Mount & Blade is a Turkish game, but had far more influence in Chinese RPGs than anywhere else.
neutral · AI labelView post →The myth. The legend. Good game, I give it 9/10. Some missions are still buggy and some scenarios that have no logic at all can happen, for eg: - catching looters in the kingdom mission sometimes fails due to some looter parties being nowhere to be found - starting a quest to capture a lord of a rival kingdom and the next day there's a peace treaty - tournaments are so unstable that, in the last stage, there's the possibility to get only a bow and bare hands against a shield + sword (you…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For everything great that Mount & Blade does, Mount & Blade: Warband does better. Mount & Blade is in one of those weird positions for a game where it's sequel is less of a sequel and more of a total remake, and every change made is for the better.
