Myst
Developer Cyan Worlds, Inc.
Myst is a 1993 adventure video game developed by Cyan and published by Broderbund for Mac OS. In the game, the player travels via a special book to a mysterious island called Myst. The player interacts with objects and traverses the environment by clicking on pre-rendered imagery. Solving puzzles allows the player to travel to other worlds ("Ages"), which reveal the backstory of the game's characters and help the… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 197 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (1,968 of 2,224 positive).
Players praise the remake for staying faithful to the original while updating visuals and controls. [1][2][3] Some find the puzzles dated and the game overpriced for its length. [4][5][6] Many appreciate the nostalgic value and the VR experience. [7][8][9]

So, I think this is a well made and reasonably fun game. The reason I am recommending not to buy is for two reasons. First, it doesn't hold up to todays puzzling standards. I came from Blue Price, the creator of which named Myst as one of his influences. The puzzles in this game are rough. Yes, the exploration aspect is cool, but every interactable item and area has one clear use which is really obvious. The start …

The 1993 classic needs no introduction. Neither does this, seeing as it's essentially the same thing. This is Myst re-tooled for a world dominated by games using full, real-time rasterization as opposed to pre-rendered stills, and more or less seen as the definitive version of the title. You can take a stroll down Memory Lane and keep the default puzzles for that nostalgia kick of being able to navigate the …

This game is a masterpiece. I'll admit that there may be *some* nostalgia at play here, but when I played the 2021 remaster I still felt like this is a game that many have tried to replicate but few have been able to match. From the moment you step on the dock, the environment gives off such a unique vibe... a beautiful world that is both peaceful and somber and that is densely packed with mysteries and clues. The …

Excellent remake. Worth every penny, though my only complaint is that they really changed up some of the atmospheres. RealMyst (2000) is far better here--ages are foggy and mysterious, sight is limited, areas are dark.... But this remaster brightens everything SIGNIFICANTLY and takes the fog away. It feels much less mysterious. Still a great entry in the series.

Important to keep in mind this is a remake of a game that was innovative in the 90s, when the first version was nearly impossible to make. 30 years later, there's Unreal Engine, VR, big screens and beautiful shaders. I don't think it is fair to use modern standards to evaluate Myst: Cyan decided to keep the remake faithful to the original game, with very few updates. There's value in this decision, which is preserve …
Summarised from 34 of the 332 public posts collected about this game; every point cites the posts behind it ([n] opens the post) and the split is counted from the posts’ own ratings. Updated Oct 12, 2026. How summaries are made
82% of the 197 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Myst. The complaint that keeps coming up: some puzzles feel dated and less satisfying. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Myst was generally praised by critics. Computer Gaming World assured its readers that the game was not like other CD-ROM games that were "high on glitz and low on substance ... Myst is everything it's touted to be and is, quite simply, the best [Macintosh] CD-ROM game." It praised the game's open-world nature, lack of player death, and "straightforward and simple" storyline. The magazine stated that the "mesmerizing" and "stunning" graphics and sound were "not the star of the show ... the substance of the game is every bit as good as its packaging", and concluded that Myst "is bound to set a new standard". In April 1994, the magazine called it an "artistic masterwork". Jeff Koke reviewed…

neutral · AI labelView post →It's insane how many people don't know anything about Myst. Myst is the reason we started used discs for computer games, and the game that made mainstream culture start considering video games to be art. It is like more significant to video game history than any film was to film history.

neutral · AI labelView post →hill i will die on: not all 3D ages poorly. perceptions of an aesthetic change the older a game gets. i think the way Myst and Riven have aged is proof that 3D art can get better with age, especially as aesthetics lose context of the era a game is in.
positive · AI labelView post →SUCH a lifelong dream to get to work on a new game set in the Myst universe. ♥️📖 Still hope we’ll get to see it through someday, but I’m thrilled we can share the trailer:
positive · AI labelView post →Well this was a dream come fucking true. Got a personal tour of the headquarters of the people who made my favorite games growing up. That's me holding the prop that is the ORIGINAL MYST book, from the very first game!! Incredible. Thank you @edoublea.com and @cyan.com !!
positive · AI labelView post →Today I found out that pretty much all the original footage from the live action filming sessions for both Myst and Riven are viewable online over on the Video Game History Foundation Library in their original quality and I think thats pretty damn neat.
positive · AI labelView post →After hitting credits, confirming: this game HAS THE JUICE This is not "Obra Dinn" or "Outer Wilds" this is a stupidly clever discombobulation of the Myst/Riven-like. If you are not a Myst sicko, this is not for you! Few more thoughts:

Myst DS isn't the most well-regarded version, but I like it well enough for what it is and does.

neutral · AI labelView post →It's funny seeing people confused by a 1997 French Adventure game with Paulo Coelho & Moebius... We focus too much on GAMER stuff for millennials, so it's easy to miss how the 90s was full of Adventure games / Myst-likes made with TV channels, museums & famous authors to target then-adult audiences

The aim of the ‘game’ was to torturously click through a series of CGI holiday snaps apparently belonging to someone who went on the most boring island getaway of all time. All without falling asleep.
