What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 72 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (245 of 274 positive).
Players praise the game's smooth gameplay and tight controls, comparing it favorably to Dead Cells and Skul: The Hero Slayer. [1][2][3]

The best way I can describe this game is clunky. Every weapon feels the same because every weapon forces you to stand completely still to attack, and every weapon's hits stagger the same amount. This basically removes choice as the best weapon is either A. the fastest weapon or B. the longest range weapon. Oh, and there is a fast shooting ranged weapon called the revolver in the game. The revolver is the best weapon …

Since nearly all of the current reviews are from Early Access, I thought I'd give some quick thoughts from the perspective of a huge roguelite fan (130+ played) starting Nightmare: The Lunatic after the 1.0 release. The TL;DR -- this is a good game in nearly all respects, and I'm quite impressed so far! Let's run through some highlights: The main 'gimmick', weapon swapping, is quite well done. Prior to starting a …

This game definitely throws a LOT of systems at you quickly which can make a rough first impression. Once I got past the introduction though, it's clear there's a lot of quality and variety behind it. Kinda similar to games like Skul and Dead Cells but with better pacing and visual clarity I think. You don't linger too long in any one zone and it feels like you get rewards at a reasonable pace. Boss fights are …

If you are looking for a game akin to Skul, then look no further. This game has a similar swap mechanic, but instead of skulls you have weapons, and swapping is the key to winning in this game. Has one of the best parry systems in any game I've played. Major difficulty spike once you get to the 3rd boss, but just like any good game, you keep coming back for more. Tons of upgrades and weapons to mess around with. …

played so far 70 minutes. it feels smooth playing it, has a dead cells feel to it. i have not regret buying it at all and do very much recommend.
Summarised from 34 of the 125 public posts collected about this game; every point cites the posts behind it ([n] opens the post) and the split is counted from the posts’ own ratings. Updated Oct 11, 2026. How summaries are made
94% of the 72 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Nightmare: The Lunatic. The complaint that keeps coming up: late-game bosses have too much HP and few attack gaps. Deal-breaker or nitpick?

Nightmare difficulty. A decade old, even if it could pass for a brand new release? Impossible. I will keep trying anyway.

neutral · AI labelView post →Lots of good ideas here, mostly from other games but done well. It's a rogue-lite with lots of upgrades that don't break the game. What you need to know: It's a lot like Dead Cells but shorter and easier on the base difficulty. A key element of the game is switching weapons. You always have 3 and switching gives bonuses. There are "gems" that determine how often you can switch. I mostly ignored the switching mechanic and got through the game just fine. You gain various currencies that let…

neutral · AI labelView post →This game is supposed to be right up my alley, I just can't get into it. The weapon swap mechanic is.. strange. I don't really see the point, maybe if there were different enemy types that are weak to certain damage. Currently it just gets in your way, and you need to remind yourself that you should probably swap weapons to get a bonus - even if you are liking your current weapon and it is appropriate for the situation. Seems to be a lot to unlock, so the game might get more interesting later…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nightmare: The Lunatic is a solid action roguelite. For being the first days of Early Access, I am impressed and how smooth the game feels. The pixel art is beautiful and controls are tight. The gameplay reminds me of ScourgeBringer meets Dead Cells. There are a few unique mechanics in Nightmare that I am really enjoying so far: 1. You start each run by selecting three weapons from all of the weapons you've unlocked. I enjoy this much more than the typical roguelite approach of your starting…
