OGRE is a science fiction board wargame designed by the American game designer Steve Jackson and published by Metagaming Concepts in 1977 as the first microgame in its MicroGame line. When Jackson left Metagaming to form his own company, he took the rights to OGRE with him, and all subsequent editions have been produced by Steve Jackson Games (SJG). From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 195 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mixed (174 of 267 positive).
Many players praise the game as a faithful adaptation of the classic board game. [1][2][3] Several reviewers criticize the AI as poor or buggy. [1][4][5] Some players report frequent crashes and game-breaking bugs. [6][7][8]

As of today i have the game in my library for exactly 5 months. All this time the official build is broken and completely unplayable. The developer is not only aware of the situation but has been supported by a forums member with a detailed explanation of the bug and a way to fix it- including a patch file! However the developer is unable to fix the game for whatever reasons despite delivering several updates during …

This game is a buggy mess. DO NOT BUY IT! I tried to play it with two of my Uncles and we couldn't do any multiplayer whatsoever. The ranked matchmaking just says connection error, the custom game lobby only goes to two players. The Custom Lobbies also have connection errors happen so if you tried to enter a match it will just drop you before you can even see the map. In otherwords. It only works as a single player …

I'm rating this positive (let's say 3/5) despite the very, very bad AI. It's a faithful reproduction of an outstanding board game. If you're an Ogre fan, you need this. If you're not, you should probably pass. The AI MUST be improved. Now, the AI...Awful. Really bad. In particular, unit movement. Examples: - Unit firing range is not always properly taken in to account when moving units. - Weaponless defense Ogre …

It's a great implementation of the OGRE game. With the most recent patch the AI doesn't play quite as stupidly as previous versions. It's still a little timid on Mark V Attack (Defender) but as attacker it plays pretty well again. I bought the original OGRE pocket game when I was 10 and it was 30 years before I found people to play with. With this game I can enjoy a quick game with that scattered crowd of people …

Mechanically, this is a faithful adaptation of the Ogre board game (and that's a good thing!). If you know the game well, you'll have no problem jumping in and getting started. Best of all, you have the freedom to play GEV as well, something that hasn't been attempted before in a computer game. And I respect the enormous ability to mod the game with new scenarios. However, the game isn't without its flaws. The …

Critics, per Wikipedia
In the April–June 1977 edition The Space Gamer (Issue No. 11), Robert C. Kirk concluded that the 1977 edition of "OGRE is attractive, easy to learn, inexpensive, and fun to play. What more can a gamer ask?" In the next edition of The Space Gamer, William A. Peterson commented that "It is fast, simple, and fun. Its bad points, while annoying, can be ignored." In Issue 11 of Dragon, Tony Watson wrote, "The nice thing about OGRE is that after you've played a game there's usually time for one more. Thus, you can rectify perceived flaws in your defense or experiment with a new mix or set-up immediately, while the new ideas are still fresh in your mind. Such experimentation is always interesting,…

The game’s creator, Yasumi Matsuno, was a big fan of the band and used their music as inspiration.

Ogre Battle creator Yasumi Matsuno planned for the game to combine elements of the first two entries and be more mainstream. Development in this direction led him to leave for Square, making FF Tactics and Vagrant Story!

neutral · AI labelView post →It would be funny for a game to have a homophobic monster. Like how the ogres in Dragons Dogma only attack you if you're playing a woman, but it's a monster that only attacks you if you're in a gay romance route. Homophobic Ogre.

neutral · AI labelView post →One foolproof trick Tactics Ogre played to sink its hooks in me for life was allowing you to recruit birdman Canopus at the beginning of the game and then let him remain useful until the very end of the game.

neutral · AI labelView post →Net/Ogre! Finding Ogres in the day time is a fun mini game because sometimes I'll spot a net and peer at every centimeter of the surroundings for 15 minutes and not find the creator, and sometimes she's just derped out right next to it, in stick mode 🤎

neutral · AI labelView post →Do not waste your money buying Ogre. I am one of those who played the original game when it used a paper map and counters and loved it. I thought the $25 sounded like a lot of money for what was a fairly simple but fun game but what the heck. Boy, was I disappointed. There are bugs which I will not go into as you can easily read about them in the comments by others. The UI is clunky and gets in the way of the gameplay. The graphics are embarrassingly bad and remind me of something that would've…

neutral · AI labelView post →This review will be of no value to Ogre board game players, as I'm sure the hold-outs picked the game up during the Winter sale. It may be of some value to those like myself with no Ogre experience, despite it having an almost legendary rep in the gaming industry. My list of Steam games (unfortunately there are many others from Matrix and HPS) gives an idea where my head is at. Despite some critcism, the graphics, UI and RNG are all just fine, and the first two items will likely be improved as…

I have been playing Ogre, literally, since the 70s when it first came out on table top. I bought it as a little package for like $5 and never looked back. I bought the expansions, hooked my friends on it and played the miniatures variant. (The minis are really quite nice.... more on that later.) The games were fast, fun…

neutral · AI labelView post →I've been playing Ogre as a board game since 1977. I took the plunge and bought the Steam version here. What a piece of garbage and a waste of money. There is something seriously wrong with the die rolls. I had 21 attacks in a row where success was a die roll of 5+. I stopped counting how many 5s or 6s I got after 5. I had more. As the 21 attacks concluded....Steam said I had gotten one hit. I had counted at least 5. There are turns where I conducted 10+ attacks and never scored a single…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TL;DR: This game has been out for 5 years and it's still far too buggy, although for certain people it's still worth it. The A.I. isn't great, but that doesn't matter if you're just playing against another human, which is probably the best mode; this is, after all, a faithful implementation of a board game. People who want a game that isn't a board game should give it a miss. I'd give it a thumbs up if it wasn't for the fact that the game's been receiving bugfix patches regularly for five…

I decided to play one of the official - and one of the most basic - scenarios, OGRE Mk. V attack on the Command Post. 2). Selected mission, made myself the attacker (the OGRE player) and pressed the start button ... 3). OK ... for some reason, I got a different map to the one normally used in this basic scenario. 4). Despite choosing to play as…
