Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 184 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (3,708 of 3,993 positive).
Players widely call OTXO a spiritual successor to Hotline Miami, blending its core gameplay with roguelite elements. [1][2][3][4] Many praise the soundtrack, art style, and fast-paced action, though some find the roguelite repetition and enemy design frustrating. [5][6][7][8] Some reviewers note that the game's difficulty and permadeath can be punishing, but rewarding once mastered. [9][10][11][12]

This game fundamentally misunderstands what made Hotline Miami so fun and addicting. Instead of dynamic, lightning-paced gameplay where you learn from your errors, the game wants you to lean on a feature that slows everything down - focus. Every engagement becomes piss easy if you use focus. It slows down enemy rate of fire & bullet travel speed. Why would I want to slow down? The music is pumping, the visual …

A fast, stylish roguelite shooter that absolutely nails its flow once everything falls into place. The blend of slow-motion gunplay, aggressive movement, and randomized runs keeps every attempt exciting. It feels like a love letter to Hotline Miami while still carving out its own identity with deeper progression and build variety.

Hotline Miami's gameplay as a roguelike. Love the aesthetics LOVE the soundtrack LOVE the gameplay. One of the more satisfying roguelikes out there.

This took way too long to complete, but I enjoyed it nevertheless. If you like the Hotline Miami duology and desperately want a third game, play this because that third game is never coming. The art style is neat, the guns are fun, the music's good, and the game itself is quite fun. Would highly recommend.

this is more than just HTLM spiritual child. This is a mONsterpiece, let's analyze it together: shooting inspired HTLM (hotline miami): YES IT IS BUT, it's way faster, needs more accuracy, weapon throwing is "realistic" as you can't throw them like they're paper planes. Noir: Noir elements are everywhere palpable; Bullet-time recalls Max Payne & Enter The Matrix, colors palette is perfect for the genre (classical …

I wish there were a word for that. But I bet you know what I’m talking about. When you look over at some IKEA furniture you bought a few years ago—maybe a table—and you haven’t assembled it yet. You want to. Maybe you even opened the box, but never finished it. Or when you see a book on your shelf. You started it, made it to Chapter 6. The old bookmark…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very good soundtrack and artstyle, but it fundamentally misunderstands what made the two hotline miami games good, and unfortunately it even goes back on certain changes made by HM2 from HM1 (looking at you, enemies that randomly tank one more bullet for no reason) The roguelike aspect of the game is repetitive and limited. You replay very similar sections often trying to get to the end. It got tiring after a while. There's no real melee aside from kicking. Lacking enemy design, and enemies…

positive · AI labelView post →Hotline Miami if it sucked ass (roguelike) But seriously, my issues with the game: 1- The enemies can spot and shoot you from outside your sight. 2- The roll mechanic doesn't carry the momentum to the unblocked direction when used diagonally, causing your character to stop abruptly against obstacles. 3- The non-combat chambers need the option to skip because they're awfully long.

neutral · AI labelView post →OTXO — Hotline Miami's speed without Hotline Miami's QoL and intrigue TL;DR: Not recommended. The aesthetic works, but the game withholds information it has no reason to withhold, and the weapon variety is thinner than the count suggests. Picked this up fresh from the Humble Roguelike Bundle. It's very much a Hotline Miami-esque game, and I come to it as someone who played Hotline Miami extensively and finished it at 100%. This one didn't land for me, and I want to be specific about why.…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love this game so much that after getting a GOG copy years ago, I got another copy on Steam just today for simpler automatic cloud saves on Steam Deck. I have zero regrets, because even though my save is wiped, it just means I get to play more OTXO to unlock it all again. Thanks Nate / Lateralis. You killed it. Also, that soundtrack is so good that I bought that twice too. Cheers.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Giving away a copy of OTXO; a game a lot of people compare to Hotline Miami. [OTXO](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1608640/OTXO/) is a game a lot of people say is like Hotline Miami. It's a top-down shooter where you are constantly ditching your weapon when it runs out of ammo that features a decent soundtrack (you can check out the linked trailer for a taste of it). --- I received a code from a Humble Choice subscription I forgot to cancel so I wanted to give it away. I figured a Hotline…
neutral · AI labelView post →It's essentially rougelike Hotline Miami and it's good. The moment to moment gun play feels great. One gripe is that the weapon and upgrades often aren't different / impact enough don't really changes how I play, so it's a not as replayble as some of the other rougelike twin stick shooter I've played. But as of writing, I've played over 7h and I'm still having fun, which is still pretty good.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →only thing OTXO needs is OTXO 2
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →OTXO is fantastic. Gameplay and music, the dev is incredible. I saw them perform a chiptune music set awhile back in Seattle and it was an absolute banger. I think he was using gameboys and lsdj or something
positive · AI labelView post →I'm not usually into rougelikes but Otxo is one of the rare exceptions. Beaten the game 3 times and I still come back to it. Very hard but also incredibly fun. Just remember to play in bursts and take breaks so it dosen't become too repetitive.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →hotline miami but enemies take 3 shots to kill, imo this reduces the fun factor(you have a lot of hp tbc) also enemies often start shooting from off screen
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you liked Hotline Miami, you're gonna love this game. It takes the core gameplay of Hotline Miami and kicks it up a notch with the speed, and now you also have a health bar, as opposed to dying in one hit.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a decent game, but I started getting bored after just 20 minutes. I would never buy it at full price, and honestly, I wouldn't recommend anyone buy it unless it's on a 80% discount or something. Like I said, the fun completely wore off for me in 20 minutes. It feels like one of those games YouTubers play in a single sitting for a video and then never touch again. To be fair, it does have simple yet fun mechanics. I can see how fans of this style could really love it, but overall, I think…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Linux Compatibility: Platinum(Deck Verified) I had no issues running this on my Linux system, everything worked perfectly.(System info in my profile page) It's a hard game and if you don't like grinding, you might not enjoy this. There is permadeath, if you die, you'll have to restart the game from the very beginning. The roguelike aspect of the game is pretty good, some powerups are trash though. The game also has a huge gun collection, most of which are inspired from other popular games.…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's easy to judge this game early due to how simple it is, but you haven't really played this game if you haven't cleared the game at least once. This used to sit in my library for years after feeling underwhelmed at the initial playthrough, but when I decided to come back to actually beat it, everything clicked. I hated the format back then, but now I think this format gives more action and experimentation, and I'm even starting to think I might prefer this over Hotline Miami. I don't…

My only gripe with the game is the time stop mechanic and how you can't just hold the button. Also, the abilities were not that impressive from the short amount of time that I played. Might come back later if I got the craving to play this kind of game but meanwhile I give it a 6.5/10.

positive · AI labelView post →A spiritual successor to Hotline Miami. Expect as a Rogue-like. incredible replayability and incredibly fun and even addictive. The game design, pacing, boss fights, and weapon variety are all perfect. I love this game. My only complaints is that at first, I thought the bosses were kinda unnecessary but over time I grew to appreciate them. They aren't badly designed or anything, they're great. I just thought they kinda didn't fit in with the rest of the game, but I came around to like them.…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's roguelite Hotline Miami. If that's what you're looking for, here it is. My main criticism is that the accuracy and reaction time of enemies are pretty overtuned, seemingly to justify the superfluous bullet time mechanic that is almost-always available to the player. The presence of a health bar also just feels like a bandaid solution to how unavoidable damage is, especially given its size and the fact it fully replenishes at the start of each floor. I get that they're trying to adapt the…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am not the kind of person to play these games, but I came across the theme of the Senior Grand Botanist online and got curious what kind of game had such a great track. It is a roguelike (which means no save points) however I found that that's part of the charm; to come home, start a new run and see how far I reach that time, improving my strategy for tomorrow until ultimately reaching the end. People say this game is the successor to Hotline Miami but I have never played nor seen it. This…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →10/10 My new favourite game, when I don't know what to do. Soundtrack is f-ing insane and the feeling of kicking booty is magnificent. Getting kicked in the booty however, isn't that much fun. :( Especially because you have to re-start from scratch and one mistake can cost you your entire run. Every run is unique due to 150+ unique maps and it takes about 1 hour to get through all stages. With each stage the difficulty increases and it gets freaking hard to survive if you are through the…

And don't get me wrong, top down shooters are one of my favorite types of games, but this one just takes the cake. And yes, I have played Hotline Miami. OTXO is a rouge-like which adds an interesting twist. Its a fast paced, blood soaked, floor clearing, adrenaline fueled rampage of a blast, I think the trailers make it pretty clear. After every few floors, you get to purchase alcoholic beverages that give you unique…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Has a killer soundtrack, and guns feel great, and you aren't punished for removing weapons you don't want in your run. The game does the good thing where you are incentivized to play fast, but the game will not stop you from playing slow either. My only complaint is I'm not the hugest fan of the weapon unlock system, it has RNG (the chance to get a lost room) plus RNG (The chance to roll for a weapon vs a collectable), then RNG on what weapon you get. So a lot of your early time should be…
