Many players find the game enjoyable but express concern over its abandonment. [1][2][3] Several reviewers report that the game has not received updates for over a year. [4][5][6] Some players recommend alternatives like Derail Valley or Railroader. [7][8][9]

a lot of the comments I have read are people who are mad that the game is abandoned and taking it out on the rest of the game. so here is a non bias review: 1. yes the game is abandoned and the devs refused the give tools for mod support so you get what you pay for and thats it. 2. i cannot confirm this froma first had perspective but many second hand accounts of dev interactions make them to be a narcissistic ass. …

I first learned about this game a long time ago watching the Youtube series Kan and Hyce made. and after a few years forgetting about it I returned to rewatch the series and decided to get the game myself. And i must say that I have enjoyed every second of my playtime on this game, from the rail planning to resource management all of it is super enjoyable for people who love trains and making their own railroad …

The bugs were tolerable in early access and the game had great potential. Now that the game is fully released, the bugs are unacceptable. Multiplayer has been broken for over a year and there has been no communication from the devs. This game has now been abandoned. Either wait for the original RO devs to release Century of Steam to release or spend your money elsewhere, avoid Astragon games though.

This game is an abandoned, buggy mess, please, save your money, don't buy this game, if you want an actually good train simulator Derail Valley both supports VR and has an enticing game-play loop and still gets major updates including train customisation and driving. Railroader is also a far better use of your money, its more of a top down strategy/logistics simulator but has multiplayer that actually works, …

I would recommend this game but it's been over a year at this point since it has seen any updates of any kind and is most likely abandoned. The game is fun especially with friends but it still has plenty of bugs and other issues. If it was still getting updates to solve the bugs and issues it would be fine but in it's current the state I'd call the game playable and sometimes fun but also often frustrating. Tracks …

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TLDR-Not recommended without bug fixes. I have logged more than a few hours on this one. It was a fun game on and off through early access. However, the finished product lacks advertised features and polish. That was forgivable for a work in progress but it isn't for a ‘finished’ product. The released version features a collection of locomotives that are interesting, but the performance and modeling is inconsistent and incongruous. Also, the big 2-6-6-2 that should be the big reward for…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My original review documenting the history of scams, false promises, and rug pulled games (yes, there were 2 prior titles to RRO) has been removed and I have been banned from the forums. I do not recommend this game nor this company.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It would be okay, but it's abandonware. Do not get unless you want a pretty barebones experience.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly I loved this game, but its dead the developer basically chased off the community that was helping build it and hasnt touched it much since.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dead Abandonware As of writing this review the last update was back in 2024 and there are only 95 people playing this game... I think that says everything you need to know about the game. Don't get me wrong, it's an alright game to play that I may pop in here and there. But it's riddled with bugs and it's kinda meh compared to others like Derail Valley and Railroader. The only unique feature is you BUILD your railway, which don't get me wrong; is a really cool feature. But it's a bit janky…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I decided to try to play the game after years of it sitting in my library. My god. Don't know about the drama and the game is obvously not updated, but that is not why I do not recommend it. The Controlls for PC are the worse I have experience in any game. It plays like a terribly botched mobile port in terms of controls. Even things that are simple on-offs you have to click and drag, sometimes up down, sometimes to the side. and the longer interactions? You click, drag up as if holding a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is abandoned and broken, I literally cannot couple cars together properly which is wild considering its an essential part of the game. There are mobile games that are better then this
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →honestly. after owning this game since early access and trying both dlc's. its not great. hasnt been updated in over a year and barely works. buggy as ♥♥♥♥. it can be fun if you dont care about operations much but honestly just buy "railroader" or "derail valley" or wait for "century of steam" to come out and you will get WAY more bang for you buck if you want a realistic experience.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Scammed! Paid full price for this game for me and my son that's over £50, then the developer gave up leaving the game unfinished and full of bugs! Every time i try to play this any enjoyment is ruined by a stuck map, or a weird glitch or simply just mechanics of the game not working as they should! I bought this game on the understanding the dev was going to finish it as a full working game and fix bugs but instead they just abandoned it, i tried to claim a refund but not allowed as i have…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I made the mistake of backing this during Early Access. It was a fun premise during EA, that we bought into it, with the promice of constant updates and new content. It's 2026, and the game has not had an update in 2 years. The game still has bugs and unfinished UI, and a lot of rough spots. That buyout should have never happened, and we have a dead game out of it. Atleast there wasn't DLC for every single new engine, so that's a plus.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Decent enough game, entirely abandoned. Most, if not all, of the original staff jumped ship a while back though, likely leading it to be the state that it is in today. Many of that team (at least to my knowledge) is working on Century of Steam, just play that whenever it releases. Century of Steam has an active dev team that provides regular devlogs. This game is dead, don't waste your time.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →dead game, derail sim, I really love going car by car on my 35 car train to re rail every single one because there was a 3 inch tall weed that caused my mutli ton locomotive to tip on its side. I also love spending 30 minutes re railing everything because I added 33% break and not 32. I also love spending 40 minutes loading the trains and 5 minutes actually driving them.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →They pretty much freaked out about the Century of Steam announcement years ago and have abandoned the game. It is fun, I'm reinstalling it right now, but if you are going to play, don't pay full price. Edit* I guess there has been talk of a big update coming eventually. I look forward to it and hope to change my review to recommended.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Multiplayer does not work, constant rubber banding, i cannot hook into the starter cars on multiplayer and what kind of psycopath makes the enter button for the main menu the enter on the num pad not the standard keyboard (edit) it has become abandon ware with most engines either missing things ie. the cook 2-8-0 lacking any unit on its fuel or the 1022d2 sand dome being modeled incorrectly which i notified the devs of in may 2024, being december 2025 and no effort has ben made to rectify such…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not Recommended (for now) I want to love Railroads Online. The concept is basically catnip if you’re into steam, logging lines, and building your own little rail empire. But the execution is… rough, and not in a charming “early access jank” way, more like “why am I fighting the controls instead of building a railroad” way. What’s good • The idea is awesome: build track, run steam, haul freight, expand. • When it’s working, it scratches that “tiny railroad tycoon gremlin brain” itch…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →as far as money grabs go. its as basic as it got had promis but i can name a game thats in progress thats proably a thousend times better. hell derail valley is already more then enough and ya dont need to lay the rails shure but ya at lest feel the role. to lazy to fix any grammar thats how much this games not valued. even as a gift.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not impressed with this game Period. For what this game costs just buy Derail Valley, the store page is completely different from the product you receive. This game is dumpster fire at best. Track building is a miserable experience by itself in this game you better have very still hands or you aren't going to get far. There is no support - updates to the game in a long time, stuff isn't going to get fixed. I'm pretty disappointed since this is actually from a decent publisher too, I don't know…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →They promised that this game would be updated and fixed and extended until it was actually fun to play, then they released a "full version", promised future updates, and promptly abandoned it. Track building is glitchy and extremely limited (one turnout, no cuts into terrain, no tunnels), performance is bad, industries are confusing, maps are hard to build on, and the economic simulation is rudimentary at best and virtually unplayable. Play Railroader instead.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is severely underbaked and riddled with bugs. On top of that, the last update was over 1 and a half year ago, there hasn't been any communication anymore, making this a yanky piece of abandonware.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Do not buy! This game hasn't been updated for almost 1.5 years at the time of this review. There's a lot of jank mechanics and bugs that still need to be fixed in the game. It's a dead game. Great idea but poorly executed then forgotten.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Railroads Online started out promising. But this game has had nothing but trouble its entire devolopment. From homophobic team members, to the original team getting booted out and replaced by the current studio, to the producer completely abandoning the game and leaving the studio completely in the dark. Avoid this game. Its not worth your time. Save your money and wait for Century Of Steam or play Railroader.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →its an pretty ok game but it hasn't been updated in over a year in a half so i would not recommend this game
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →You can make your own fun in this sandbox. However the game was released roughly one year ago in the same state it's been during beta. In this last year we had only one hotfix with no further development in sight. Basically at this point it's abandonedware. Physics are janky Graphics are servicable at best Performance is terrible
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →the biggest disappointment ive ever had the displeasure of hyperfixating on.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It’s a really good game, and it’s fun, but it’s basically abandoned because the creators haven’t updated the game in 2 years now. There also seems to be no information on when they’re going to work on it again. It’s a shame though, because this game is really fun to play :C It just gets boring after a while when you already have everything and know that nothing new will be added to the game. :C
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wanted to love this game, I really did. I've played off and on since early access and it had tons of potential, but unfortunately now it's just abandonware. There are still various bugs and pain points that have existed for years now that have never been addressed. Every time I go back to try and play it I get frustrated after about an hour of trying to build a semi-decent yard and quit. I can't in good conscious recommend this game which has been abandoned in an unfinished and unpolished…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm not Commander Sheppard, but this is probably my favorite piece of abandonware on Steam that I've encountered. I mean, the devs swear up and down that they are in fact still working on it despite the last update being about 2 years ago, but refuse to elaborate as to what they are supposedly doing. My guess is that they ran out of money, quickly shoved the semi-finished game out the door as a Minimum Viable Product, and if they're doing anything with the game now it's probably on a sporadic,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game still plays like an early access, ganky, buggy, and in much need of QOL work. Best way to describe it, is it feels like they slapped together a bunch of rushed game mechanics so that they could call it completed, then dump the game and leave. Defiently not worth the $38.99 CAD they're asking for it, in its current state would I wouldnt recommend spending anymore then $10 CAD.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So I loved this game, A lot. But they kept doing stupid things that made the game worse and worse. Resetting progress, useless changes, and raising pricetags for a game that tbh is abandonware. The game hasnt had a meaningful update for several months, the dlc are a waste of money and for a multiplayer game this game is terrible for multiplayer. Its turned into a drag with no content. In fact the game has so little to offer that an entire dev team made a whole new version of the game but…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I loved this game, but since its nearly been an entire year since the last update, I think it's pretty safe to call it abandonware at this point. The game has always had rough edges, and that used to be fine in early access but games should be much more polished before full 1.0 release. If the devs released an update(even just a small bug patch) to show a sign of life I would likely recommend this game, but it has just been abandoned for almost a whole year now :(

neutral · AI labelView post →Alright listen up devs if you can see this i have some reconmmendations. 1This is a great game but it would be better if you added a sandbox mode. 2 A button to load cargo without having to get out the train. 3 Workshop support you will NEVER have to update the game if it had a workshop just think of it. negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Was a great game and on pace to be a top railroading game at the time of purchase a few years ago. Currently, game is playable with an incredible amount of quirks that make you want to close the game. After the last larger update that was released a few years back, there has been nothing from the devs. I recently made a discussion about getting some basic QOL updates to at least make the bones of a game that we have somewhat more fun, but got the generic response of 'join the discord to see…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →the dark side of this game the dev and more is a simple internet splunking away do some digging and you will know why the game is not updated in years or the cash grab broken DLC for a broken base game not even in the small game way the past of the crew that made the game is filled with cash grabs and abandonware do some digging and make your own choice but this is at this rate as dead as there last game minor update the dev got into so much Drama a 2nd crew is involved but never fixed the OG…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This used to be a pretty fun game when I got it, it was fun just laying the various lines and then running them with my cute little narrow gauge locomotives, and to an extent it still can be, but the game these days is frankly just...♥♥♥♥. The big thing I think especially is that the switch to unreal engine 5 just ruined the performance and it needs like several patches worth of optimization, it's not that pretty of a game, why is it taking as much of my ram as it can get? Especially once…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As a veteran player of this game with almost 1400 hours on the clock, and been playing since launch, I wish I could give a MEH rating. It's far from polished, but its currently in it's most playable state since launch. (take that with a grain of salt as you will) if you are like me and love the building aspect then this game on single player, this game will give you a solid 10-20 hours of fun perfecting your map. but for the $30 price tag it's absolutely not worth it. HOWEVER! , the biggest…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I do like the for being able to build and run your own railway. In that it is rather fun. Ultimatley tough it is a rather bad and frustrating if you want to make things realistic. On no map so far was I able to link up all industry when trying to stay with a gradient or curves that would be manageable by trains. Some industry on the map even require ridicoules gradients right after the loading area. I was looking at the prelaid maps to see if was just not able to find the right way, but they…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was always fine with this game having alot of bugs especially when having longer consists but when the full version got released and cars still "rattle" and seperate randomly and the camera just "jitters" all over the place for me and all my friends, it's a little frustrating that this wasnt fleshed out beforehand. Track placement has a learning curve and can be difficult, even when you have a vision in your head of what your trying to accomplish and it feels like it was "it's still in early…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I hadn't touched this game for a long while, but decided to check it out again out of boredom today. And boy, was it really a journey. To start, the track laying system is not good, at all. It took me a solid 15 minutes of fiddling to make the track actually connect, because most of the time it will "connect" and the rails won't even meet. Switching it back to the older mode(the "precise" mode in game now) helped, but still it was way more of a chore than it needed to be. Then, the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is dead. No updates in over a year and the DEVS messaged 6 months ago saying one was coming but didn't know when. 6 months later but it never came. It's not worth $29.00 any more but more like $6.00. So disappointed because there are still some bugs and they abandoned this game. DONT BUY! Its worth $6.00 TOTAL. Don't buy the DLC unless its all for $6.00.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Don't buy this game. It showed some promise during early access, but it's basically been abandoned since 1.0. Also, the forum mods are really touchy and are quick to lock down threads and issue warnings to people who ask for something to give us any hope that the game isn't abandoned.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →During Early Acces the game was playable and enjoyable especially with the RROx mod. Then Astragon came and do what they always do. Ruining the game, ignoring the community, stole ideas of the RROx mod and implemented them but render them useless and missing QOL functions entirely. Modding is still not supported. The trains are rubberbanding in curves (single-player). Last update was Dez 2024. Dont waste money, I would request a refund if I wouldn't have bought it in EA before Astragon…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My main issue is with the building of tracks. I'm mainly comparing this game to an amazing game similar to this one, Overfreight!. In Overfreight the builder for tracks is far better and easier to use, both starting out and more down the road. Overfreight's builder will auto place ground/ballast/bridges of your choice under the track you are placing rather than you having to keep swapping track types. Another thing it's builder does is, automatically fitting the grade of the track during turns,…

I followed the development of this game since the very start in October of 2021, when this game was promised to be something great with a team of dedicated volunteers working with the (at the time) sole developer. Over time, key volunteers left and so did the overarching vision and expertise required for this game to be what it made out to be to the supporters. The developer brought in mobile game devs and a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →More jank than i can deal with. From trains doing backflips because of a single twig, to logs pinging off into the horizon because you dared to unload more than one car at a time. Its a shame because i can see the potential, but with the 1.0 update releasing at the end of '24, and zero communication since, its not worth your money.
