What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 244 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (4,922 of 5,228 positive).
Players praise the game's worldbuilding, writing, and immersive atmosphere. [1][2][3] Some note that the game is text-heavy and may not suit all players. [4][5] A few reviewers mention issues with unclear phrasing and limited archive. [6]

I love the game idea and in most aspects, it's a good game, however, things are phrased unclear sometimes and you will need to remember names or such, which you might need to ask for. There is an "archive" tab for past conversations, but it has a limit which is less than you can talk within one of the smaller settlements in the game world, leaving you stuck to ask for a guy whose name you can't remember and can't …

No game is as brilliantly human as Roadwarden. You feel vulnerable but capable, you use your wits, tools, and fellow man to try to tame your part of a harsh world, you take a drink of cool water and a deep breath after a scrap with an animal or tough climb. You feel alive. Roadwarden is like a good book and a long hike in the woods put together. A moment of reflection in a busy world to make you appreciate the …

Nothing but praise for Roadwarden For a game which consists mainly of reading words, I ironically can't find the words to truly capture what I find so special about Roadwarden. This is a game for those who enjoy being drawn into a realistic fantasy world, who love to drown in descriptive prose and ambient music. And for those who enjoy true consideration, real choices that aren't simple binaries between good ending …

if you cannot stand a game comprised almost entirely of text, do not buy this game. If you can, BUY THIS IMMEDIATELY!!!! But you need to know that this game has only one major thing going for it, which is the writing. I'm lying, kind of. While there are few visuals, no voice acting, and no "real" gameplay mechanics outside of making a choice on where to go or what to say; the sound design is stellar. The music keeps …

This isn't really a review. I mostly want to talk directly to the writer/developer, and to anyone interested in writing, about something very specific in Roadwarden's writing. I genuinely think it's one of the main things holding the game back from being something of a masterpiece. I'm not saying "write better." I'm trying to explain precisely where the writing loses its grip and what I think would make it stronger …
Summarised from 34 of the 389 public posts collected about this game; every point cites the posts behind it ([n] opens the post) and the split is counted from the posts’ own ratings. Updated Oct 9, 2026. How summaries are made
Players who liked Roadwarden talk about excellent worldbuilding and immersive setting; those who didn't talk about text-heavy with little visual variety. Which matters more to you?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Roadwarden has been met with positive reviews, featuring an initial score of 85 out of 100 on review aggregator Metacritic. RPGFan positively describes the game as: "A bold and distinct world, all pieces and parts work wonderfully well together, outstanding writing", and states that its only major criticism is that some decisions are not ultimately reflected in the ending, citing a sense of discontinuity. TheGamer compares it to the games Disco Elysium and Citizen Sleeper, noting that "capitalism is a constant and overbearing presence". PC Gamer refers to playing the game as being similar to reading a fantasy novel.

(a thread) Roadwarden This game feels like a warm blanket with a coffee and balancing on the edge of a knife at the same time. It fully consumed my thoughts for weeks.
positive · AI labelView post →What are some alternative to soulless videogame franchises?. What I mean is... sometimes people are very loyal to a videogame franchise or a company because they loved a game they released years ago (Silent Hill/Konami with Silent Hill 2, Blizzard/Bethesda with their respective golden eras, some could argue this happens too with Pokémon and Final Fantasy, etc). Ethical/consumer reasons aside to stop supporting certain companies, sometimes some franchises/companies aren't necessarily creating…

neutral · AI labelView post →Eh. I feel a bit cruel listing this as "Not Recommended" given the rave reviews, because my only major reason for doing so is that it just wasn't impressive. Not that this was bad at all. It's a more than functional RPG that'll sate fans of works like Citizen Sleeper. The setting is a neat mixture of Wild West-esque frontier dwellings and untamed wilderness, pretty unique for a fantasy RPG. Letting the player construct their background in Hovlavan by asking them random questions and letting…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good solid interactive fantasy fiction with RPG elements. Unless you have an active dislike for sepia and amber tones I'd say this is a must play for adventure and RPG fans with emphasis on role playing.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →@razbuten.bsky.social Check out my Roadwarden if you're interested in seeing a modern take of an RPG with a time limit. A controversial part of the game to be sure, but supports everything about its design. Will use it again. ; )
neutral · AI labelView post →Every now and then, I find a discarded Roadwarden design from the early days. This "leaf" border is so bad, yet I keep thinking "what if". Also, the game is like 4 bucks or something on Steam atm, Summer sale and all. #screenshotsaturday #indiedev

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One thing I've always really enjoyed doing as a DM is giving players a chance to share in the worldbuilding. IE "You crest the top of a hill, what do you see?" Or, "You approach the innkeeper. What do they look like?" There aren't many instances I can think of where video games do this, especially after initial character creation. But this game does it in spades. In dialog you are frequently given the opportunities to further define your character, their place in the world, and the world…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am disappointed with this game as seeing the amount of positive reviews and enjoying a good choose your own adventure or even visual novel I expected to love it. Overall my feelings ended up mixed and I don't think that I'll be finishing it. I think that the game's problems are beautifully shown by it's map - a circle. It took me a moment to understand what exactly made my bounce off the game and I think that the biggest part was the circular repetitive gameplay - you travel tens of times…

neutral · AI labelView post →Shortly after beating Disco Elysium and being properly enthralled by it, a friend suggested I try Roadwarden. Looking at the trailer, I was very skeptical -- how could a game that looks so simple match the grandiosity and genius of Disco? But is in this simplicity of systems and focus on a small-yet-very-dense world filled with interconnected events and great writing, Roadwarden took me and never really let me go. Many people have already mentioned the typos that happen maybe a bit too…

I've never really played one of these games, although I did have a demo for one of the Myst titles back in the day. This game was one of the best experiences I've had playing video games ever. I never allowed myself to look up how to complete a task or get past an event (the game makes it super easy to experiment with its very accessible quicksave/load) and figuring out an encounter or puzzle or even…

positive · AI labelView post →> Maybe I wouldn't like DnD after all ## Why - A lot of effort went into making a believable world - Compelling characters with personality and their own stories - Simple but effective art style ## Why Not - Swamps of dialogue with nothing to break it up - No real sense of progress after 3 hours - Trusts the player a bit too much ## Impressions I feel bad for dropping what's clearly a quality game so early, but three hours into what's meant to be a ~12 hour experience I need to feel more…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Amazing game that truly feels special. Everyone playing this game will have a unique experience, and I'm not exaggerating when I say that my life feels richer for having played it. It's engaging, calming, fascinating, and very very fun. Don't let the phrase 'text-based' intimidate you! Even though my brain cells have been fried by social media and short-form videos, I was always invested in this game and couldn't wait to get home from work to play more. 10/10, no question.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Scratches the Disco Elysium itch a little bit. I really appreciate its lack of hand-holding; note-taking is beneficial and you have to pay attention to what people say to make progress. Also, the ability to specifically input what you're looking for in a room, or type in the name of a person you want to speak to, makes the game feel very immersive. Answers aren't handed to you. I'm enjoying the challenge, and the ability to demonstrate self-efficacy in games feels rare and satisfying.

neutral · AI labelView post →When someone ends the Roadwarden, he feels sad for abandoning that magical world. So beautiful it is to inhabit in it. This game made me wonder many questions regarding our own reality: What could have happened if a colonial power never entered in contact with a less powerful and different civilization? The settlement of Howler's Dell has its own religion, culture and relationship with nature. The druids preach and try to address a close and respectful relationship with their environment,…

She pauses, but there's no sadness in her eyes. "Stories have a better reach, aye? We can tell each other 'bout strangers who lived centuries ago. There's magic in that." A delightful little adventure. Felt like playing an old school fantasy RPG and this game scratched that itch perfectly. It takes some time getting used to the various names and places on…

neutral · AI labelView post →This game enthralled me. I got lost in it for hours. Easy recommendation. If you enjoyed Disco Elysium, you will surely like this. Though just in case it's not clear yet: this is closer to a book than a video game. The Good: The writing is excellent, and ultimately that's what makes the game. The music... Wow. 10/10. It is text-based but it has beautiful pixel art and an incredible soundtrack that sucks you in to the amazing story and world.
positive · AI labelView post →I liked the concept. And from the start the world feels real and foreign from the one you and I reside in. If worldbuilding is your favorite part of fiction, this may be right for you. However, it is a story-driven game, and the story and writing I ultimately decided (after 5 hours) are lacking. Another reviewer put my thoughts into words: "In a game with no traditional gameplay loop, every paragraph needs to earn its place, and too often it didn’t, and much of it felt like filler."

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Roadwarden is an rpg of all time. The writing reacts to your involvement in ways that feel subtle at first, and are only profound when you look back on it. You can fight cat/eagle voltron in a swamp. Advanced game progression involves getting a toothbrush.
positive · AI labelView post →Finished playing The Pillars of the Earth visual novel game. I thought it was a really lovely way to adapt the story and the visuals were great. It had some very thoughtful writing in regards to the nature of God imo* Next game hoarded in my Steam Library I will start is Roadwarden methinks
neutral · AI labelView post →Roadwarden is one of those choices matter games that stuck with me long after the game was over. Early choices do sometimes have profound consequences in ways you would not imagine. Results are not easily predictable, and there was no clear way to make a "right" or "wrong" choice. The story was immersive. The art was fitting and charming. The lore was dosed in a way that left me hanging in pleasant suspense to find out more. I never felt like I was drowning in exposition.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game takes place over 40 days unless you turned that off. It's okay, I don't feel like your choices matter all that much and there is a lot of disconnect between what you actually do and the impact of that depending on your choices. It's not a bad game but it's not great either. I think I'm about half way through my playthrough but I am too bored to finish it, I wasn't bored when I started playing. The lore is good and worldbuilding is solid, I think maybe there wasn't enough of what I was…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of my all-time favorite games. The writing and art style transport you to the Peninsula, a place that feels real and alive. I fell in love with the characters and the world. Also, it's one of those rare games that can wear the "choices matter" tag with sincerity. I played through it three times, one for each starting class, and the experience was completely different each time based on choices I made and the skills each of my Roadwardens had. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you're okay with reading a fair bit, this game will reward your attention and curiosity. It's mysterious without being inscrutable. It's really fun to replay because you can choose between pretty different "starting" identities and abilities. The choices felt sufficiently weighty and the consequences were real without being so debilitating that you ran back to a quick save at every opportunity. It has an in-game notebook for you to use, which isn't constantly needed but very useful at a…

neutral · AI labelView post →Although it is an RPG on paper, I personally am terrible at RPGs, and what Roadwarden felt like to me was a really rich choose your own adventure, with loads of hand-made surprises and reactivity. Really beautiful reflections on community, nature, imperialism, religion and lots more. Lovely game.
positive · AI labelView post →First hour or so is fine maybe even interesting, then at one point some NPC throw walls of exposition and story and I started to lose the interest to keep up with all of that. Then there are npcs that want me to write stuff to ask them and thats when I understood I should have payed more attention to the walls of text. While I did expect a story based game , I had a slight expectation that it had more choices relevancy (until now I dont feel like it had much), and more "battles". In short…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good writing, great worldbuilding, genuinely interesting systems that are opaque while also being intuitive, and decisions with far-reaching consequences. Feels like an actual RPG, and that's quite an achievement for a computer game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Did two playthroughs, the two endings I got both felt bittersweet, but I guess such is life.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just not for me I guess. The worldbuilding is great and the setting seems cool. I just never felt like I had much ability to really have fun with it. The NPCs were so demanding it was like I had to promise them my firstborn before they would tell me their names let alone make any progress in what the Roadwarden is supposed to be doing. I felt less like a rugged explorer braving the wilds and more like a hassled retail worker trapped in the Valley of the Karens. Yes ma'am I'll go check the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An excellent choose your own adventure story with a great deal of depth! The world is somewhat original as well, not just being you regular fantasy adventure. Could probably do with a bit more music variety and it may be just a bit too long, but I can't think of any other criticism really. Highly recommended.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My tenure as Roadwarden? A tale of gambling, failure, murder, and escalating chaos. I left the peninsula worse than I found it, beaten and bruised, but rich in coin and wild stories. The genius of this game is how it lets you truly become the corrupt, incompetent warden you choose to be (if you want). 10/10. A standout in text-based RPGs for its sheer roleplaying freedom.
