What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 186 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (3,611 of 4,377 positive).
Players enjoy the game's unique magic school management concept and find it fun despite some flaws. [1][2][3] Many reviewers note the game has a steep learning curve and lacks polish in several areas. [4][5][6] Some players criticize the inability to remove rooms and persistent pathfinding bugs. [6][7][8]

I like the idea of this game but the implementation leaves a lot to be desired. The largest problems with it are the lack of multiple saves, bad pathfinding, and inability to delete or move rooms. If not for the pathfinding and room issues, multiple saves wouldn't be needed. But as things stand, if you accidentally drop a room in the wrong spot, your entire campaign may be ruined. Most egregious of all is the …

It's a magic management sim where you're basically the headmaster, except you can't actually tell anyone what to do, which is probably more realistic than we'd like to admit. You just build rooms, hire teachers who may or may not be competent, and hope the little bastards learn something before the whole school explodes. Which it will. Every time. That's not a spoiler, that's the game. Look, if you're the sort of …

One of the most infuriating and best tower-puzzle-colony sims ever made. I love headbutting walls apparently. Get the two mods on nexus that highlight rooms and objects, I can't believe they're not in the game already. This game SEVERLY lacks QoL. There's a lot to this game and every single thing has a use to be min-maxxed. After finally getting a perfect run on archmage difficulty I just about understand the game …

Ugly, Chaotic, Magical… I’m Obsessed I’ll be honest—I picked this game up for a couple bucks with a steam key, not expecting much. Just thought, “eh, some weird wizard sim. Probably mid.” I was wrong. It rules. This game is *fun*. Like, stupidly fun. It’s chaotic, weird, full of wild systems and “wait what does THAT mechanic do?” moments. You build your own magic university from scratch. Sort your students into …

Harry Potter meets SIm Tower in all the best ways. I cant recommend this game enough, its original, the art is inspired and its just so much fun its hard to describe. I've played it through many times and it never gets old.

74% of the 186 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Spellcaster University. The complaint that keeps coming up: cannot remove or move rooms once placed. Deal-breaker or nitpick?

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm honestly torn on whether to give a positive or negative review for this. I think I'm leaning positive since it is from a small developer. Is it possible to have fun playing this game? Yes, absolutely. But overall it feels unpolished, especially when you compare the experience to other colony/base building games. I think nearly every feature could use some quality of life improvements to make the gaming experience more fun. My biggest complaint is lack of information. It feels like I'm…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am going to start this with "It's not a bad game, but..." Seriously, the core of the game is solid, building your university from card drawn from 6 "decks." Train your mages and have them give back stat increases dependent on the job they got once they graduate. You also can curry favor from other factions for bonuses and use graduated students to raid dungeons. It is not a bad looking game and it runs smooth. But it's not for me, mainly down to one big reason and a couple of small ones.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I enjoyed this game but I cannot in good faith recommend it. Its bugs are frequent and severe enough to prevent normal play. At its price point, this is honestly egregious. I'm not certain if every bug that exists presently has existed throughout prior updates. I picked this game up again after having first played it in an officially incomplete state many years ago. It's sad to see where this game has ultimately ended up. The most significant bugs I've encountered involve pathfinding issues.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First I'll address the negative reviews, Yes the game is a bit over-priced for its actual content, 15$ would be much more fitting for the quality. Yes the game is not very forgiving with room placement and the such, but its also a rogue-lite, you aren't suppose to build the perfect school, you are suppose to finish a goal before the school in consumed by the forces of evil and you have to move to the next zone. If this looks like something you'd like to play, but the rogue-lite aspects and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun Magic school fish bowl simulator. Build the school - recruit faculty and staff - teach the students magic and have fun with goofiness of the game! Lots of replayability and fun achievements.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There just doesn't seem to be very much.....here? I play the tutorial level. I learn how to put down rooms, and all that. I get some students. I get a couple of quests I can complete that...I think give you more research points maybe? Then you sit there and wait until you have enough resource and you click the button and draft some more rooms or items and play them, and then repeat. That's the core loop. There's a couple of dungeon crawling events that will appear, but if you don't have the…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →⭐ Steam Review — *Spellcaster University* **The Good** * Most of the game is fairly intuitive and easy to pick up. * The magic system is straightforward while still being creative and interesting. * The pacing is brisk without feeling overly rushed. * The card system is genuinely interesting and enjoyable to interact with. * The core gameplay mechanics aren't particularly difficult to understand. **The Bad** The graphics are very *“cartoony”* and, unfortunately, I found them…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →pretty fun, some reviews said its way too luck based but they probably just didn't understand the faction interaction system. For example: you aren't supposed to roll for all your basic classrooms via the gold card packs, you can easily buy them from the merchants. The game could definitely do a better job at telling you these things but I personally enjoy the lack of hand-holding. I saw some people complaining about the length of the "matches" being either too long or you not having enough…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love this game. A lot. I was overjoyed the new update would finally fix my issues, but teachers are still getting stuck (walking into the wall endlessly). When you don't have teachers, well, your students don't learn anything, and basically, you are stuck. Apart from this issue... It's amazing game for chilling. Build a school, build it effectively, keep up your reputations... Choose wisely. The humour in this game is exactly my type of humour. Kudos. I would recommend it to everybody,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This was a close one! So the core mechanic here is that you draw and play cards, most of which create rooms, and students and teachers use the rooms. The most important rooms are classrooms, which generate Mana and XP when used. Mana turns into more cards, and XP improves the student. Students eventually graduate and generate a "Future" based on their levels. You have goals, and a limited timer before the university is destroyed. Completing goals improves the next university, adding a mild…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you enjoy somewhat silly or tongue-in-cheek simulation games, the "fresh slate" feeling of starting over in a new level or area while gaining some overall progression, and fantasy and magic, I'd say there's a good chance you'll enjoy this game. If you're looking for something serious, complex, or story-driven, this isn't what you're looking for. Having just won the campaign, it's not likely I'll come back to it any time soon, but I enjoyed my time with it and I could see myself picking it…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've played a lot of this game, and it's generally great. However... The pathing is ♥♥♥♥♥♥. Sometimes, if you place your buildings in a certain way (which you won't know until it happens), your students (or worse: teachers) will get stuck trying to get somewhere. And they will sprint all out to get there. On the spot. Going nowhere... This happened to me most recently in the Volcano region, which has an increased incidence of fires. When a room has a fire, it completely shuts down. There were…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is not going to be the most useful review out there. It is hard to pin point but I simply did not enjoy this game at all. Felt that much of the actions were a slog rather than enjoying myself.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Spellcaster University - 6/10 Spellcaster University is a decent attempt at creating something novel: a Hogwarts simulator. The idea of a game where you can create your own wizarding school is intriguing and while I got a brief moment of joy and wonder out of the game; in the end, it did not hold up enough for the game to keep me interested past eight hours of gameplay. This was largely due to a variety of factors. For one, the possible creativity you could unleash in this game is greatly…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fair warning: lots of roguelikes on this list. Just seems like the devs of these games really like 2d non-demanding visuals. And I don't know how low do you need to go, so check these individually. Don't even need a sale for Moonring, which is a retro turn-based RPG, completely free. Runs on a potato. Original Monster Train should work decently well, it's 90% off. Shogun Showdown is really cool, 50% off. Necesse is a very fun Terraria-like, coming out of EA in like a week and on sale now.…
neutral · AI labelView post →Concept is cute. Gameplay is okay... it has a lot of room for improvement. Was getting bored after just an hour or so. Honestly I might refund this game but I want to see how it develops too. Right now the core game mechanics are just place rooms or decorations from deck cards, have students join and leave, and reply to prompts from neighbors or visitors on a timer. It's not really as deep as it looks and feels pretty shallow. I like the idea but I can't recommend this game currently.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Glitchy, uncomfortable to play, boring and pointless. I especially HATE the games with a timer. What's the point of building stuff? I would recommend this game to someone I really don't like.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Like many 'passive city-builder' games, it falls victim to the feeling of "what is the point?" problem. Decision making doesn't feel consequential enough like a deck-builder. City (or school) layout doesn't have much strategy. The build time/resources aren't levelling up like a rogue-lite. There isn't a greater story or arc unfolder. I could go on - but ultimately, the issue is that it does a whole lot of things "okay-ish" but never scratches any particular itch from a gameplay perspective.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Buy on sale if you're interested. It's fine enough, if a bit underbaked, may get the best results if you mess with the settings instead of playing on the default one. I only played on the standard settings, so my review only reflects that. Overall it's just not what I was looking for from a game with this theme. What you build is limited by what random cards you draw, individual students and teachers do not matter too much and you don't even really have time to get attached to them because the…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't think there are many folks out there that have put more hours into this game than me. If you're the type of game player that obsesses over each decision and enjoys doing the same tasks over and over again to find the truly optimal line - this one will speak to all those tendencies. Highly recommend.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I absolutely love this game! I haven't had any bugs or issues, not sure why that is compared to others, maybe I just haven't noticed them? I have completed a few campaigns so who knows. Anywho, It is simple to understand and I enjoy the randomness of card drawing/house attributes. Every playthru is different so I can keep trying new things or adding challenges. Super cute graphics also! Oh and I see they are still doing updates plus a DLC on the way, very cool considering it released in 2021.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a very boring game. You wait, you build, you choose, and you don't really know what is happening or why or care
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's not bad really, but does get repetitive pretty quickly. On my second school and the gameplay is pretty much the same with some new student types mixed in. If you want to sit there and try to min-max stats you're able to do that. At the end of the day though, it's just did hit right for me.

neutral · AI labelView post →Its not a bad game, but it isn't for me. Pick it up if you like heavy management games like "Not Enough Oxygen" but with the spin of deck building.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After a rough start, it grew on me. Many things are explained poorly, and most not at all so it was a very steep learning curve. I was determined to give it a proper chance and finish the first level, though. Turns out that once you've got the hang of things, it's pretty great! And there's enough variables to give it replay value, too.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Spellcaster University. It's not the most complex game, but you're given control to build your own set of universities, trying to accomplish the goals given to you. You have a limited amount of time before the Great Evil comes and you have to start over. Each location has its pros and cons, different graduation classes can give benefits that persist through the run, and all the building is done through picking one of 3 cards themed around what they focus on(Gold for general improvement and…
neutral · AI labelView post →Summary: refunded after ca. 2h ▶️ Spellcaster University is a side-scrolling room management game which has a neat artstyle to it, but feels rather simplistic in most aspects. It seems very unfocused and confused in its gameplay. negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →no idea what was happening, tutorial was horrible (info dump, no practice), gameplay was confusing (some tooltips are missing or showing the wrong one, very hard to understand what different mechanics actually do), a lot of the mechanics were very stiff or straight up broken (e.g. zoom in fast on a room but no fast zoom out, card says I have a room I can add a creature to but it doesn’t show which room unless I zoom in on the correct room, etc), feels like a very early access game. I get that…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a good game for what it is, but ONLY if you get it on sale. I got it for around $8USD and I would say it's worth about $10. The base price of $25 is too high for how shallow and repetitive the base mechanics are. But it definitely has an addictive loop the first hour you play it. It's a cute little game that's good for when you want a kind of mindless ant farm type of game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Students still stuck at wall of the split building whenever you place a split building on the lake and volcano levels. Otherwise, great game, I was surprise that the developers still update it in late 2025.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game was fun for a bit but after i went to the desert every single one of the npc got stuck on a wall and the save is completely unplayable now.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's okay. 3.5/10. No options for minimizing or postponing a surprise decision - such as if you're 3 mana short for a gated choice. This was extremely frustrating. No option for disabling VSync (experiencing drops to 15 fps on an AMD system with it enabled) No settings beyond extremely basic selections None or very little extension of time window on each map. Lots of RNG in rolls and acquisitions Very little control over student training (even if to meet a required # of student graduating in…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm pretty sure I would have enjoyed this game but returned it due to the fact that there was no in game scaling. The bottom portion (where all the stuff is) was mostly cut off and I'm not going to change my pc's settings every time I want to play the game. If UI scaling is added, might try again.

neutral · AI labelView post →Spellcaster University, basically it's a game where you make your own wizard school. Played it a while ago, I remember it being pretty good
positive · AI labelView post →Good enough for casual play. Seriously lacks polish and breaks easily if the university gets too big.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The concept is neat but everything just feels off about the game. The RNG will consistently make it so you never get the classes you need. The students will avoid the classes you need them to go to. The events will always have options you can't take. And there is nothing you can do about it as it laughs while flipping you the bird.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Decent. Each student can develop different personality and trait with given decorations. Player could not move rooms once put down, so it is not designed for perfectionists, sadly. The stories are fun too. Interaction with local community made the world a bit more real.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A very addicting deck game
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A super fun little game with a good sense of humour
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Cute game, for a few hours, but feels very shallow very quickly. I really expected at least some basic management possibilities, such as planning and classes management. Hope they add more to the game. Oh, and also: not everything needs to be a deckbuilder. Really.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I just don't understand the goals of this game. There's no "bad decisions" or ways to lose the game aside from the inevitable time running out. Nothing you choose to do seems to make any difference aside from "number go up" but that's not even a satisfying aspect. Seriously, what is this game trying to be? What are we, as players, supposed to do?
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It was kinda fun for one run, but was dragging by the end. Its mostly just watching the game play itself. Most decisions I made either seemed like they didnt matter or it was obviously which choice was best
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Spellcaster University is a fantasy management simulator that takes the familiar concept of running a magical school and transforms it into a surprisingly deep strategy game filled with roguelite progression, card-based construction systems, and constant unpredictability. Rather than simply copying traditional school simulators, the game builds its identity around the idea of rebuilding magical education in a world slowly being consumed by darkness. Players are not just organizing classrooms…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →my school is awesome and people only really die if I send them on a suicide mission into the dungeons and I don't pay the teachers for 7 years but it is otherwise a great school!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →there is a huge potential here only if they allow modding in steam. i really liked this game but the game is abandoned so if they allow steam workshops mods it will have minimum 10 years life cycle. it get repetitive after a while and the dungeon fights, which are the best part of the game, only happens once or twice.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →No UI scaling option which makes game impossible to play on an ultrawide monitor. Most of the confirmation dialogues populate below the screen cutoff so I can't even play the game at all
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I found this to be a pretty interesting management game that is relaxing while still needing thought put into your decisions. It is fulfilling to watch your students evolve, and the ability to send them on dungeon expeditions where they can use what they've learned adds to that. The story and writing is whimsical and fun. Would probably recommend on sale as it has been out awhile and you should have no problem finding one.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love the creativity and whimsy of the game, the strategy and roguelike gameplay is great too! The music gets a bit repedetive and is not the strong suit of the game but I am surprised how well made it is overall! My only ask would be to be able to recolor the walls of the rooms, it would give so much more personality to the buildings itself and set every new school apart. It would also help differentiate the types of rooms if players would want it.
