What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 128 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (268 of 296 positive).
Players praise the game's immersive atmosphere, grotesque art, and sound design. [1][2][3] Some reviewers find the puzzles and multiple-choice events frustrating and illogical. [4][5][6] A few players report technical issues, including crashes that prevent completion. [7]

I quite enjoyed Death Mark as it required logical reasoning to put the story together to progress. Such as the first chapter, the spirit was referring to "red" which turned out to be referring to a significant and important object to the spirit. Understanding the hints and clues that each item represents and when to use them was part of the fun. But in Spirit Hunter NG, none of it makes sense. It is beyond …

Spirit Hunter: NG is a horror visual novel and the second entry in the Spirit Hunter franchise, featuring a different story and characters. As a newcomer to the series, I was still instantly drawn into the grotesque world and despite a few minor issues, I was hooked for the game's entirety. Pros Freakish & gruesome art Numerous chilling stories Multiple endings/story paths resulting from different choices (Good/Bad) …

Great game just like the first. Pros: +Visual design is on point, with a beautiful semi-realistic artstyle that makes everything very spooky and immersive. It's hard to describe, but it somehow it manages to make the grotesque beautiful and surreal. +The sound design is also very immersive, and is half of the experience. Make sure to wear headphones for this one. +The story feels a bit more involved and personal …

This is a bit 50/50 to be honest, and I'll make it short to not take too much of your time or make this review boring: (I played the game multiple times as you can see) Good: *Chapters and story are for sure interesting. *Characters are enjoyable. *The art is gorgeous and the atmosphere is overall good enough to make you feel uneasy when you should be. Some moments are really creepy and make you anxious for real …

Oh hello there horror fans, fancy meeting you here. In case you are wondering, yes you should get this game. The atmosphere is incredibly well done, the sound design is eerily beautiful and the characters are well written. Also just because it's a visual novel, don't let it scare you. This isn't one of those which boasts 1,000,000 words, the writing is efficient and skin crawlingly detailed. For a more in depth …

Players who liked Spirit Hunter: NG talk about beautiful and disturbing art style; those who didn't talk about frustrating puzzles that require a guide. Which matters more to you?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Spirit Hunter: NG was well received, and was considered a step up from the previous entry in the series by critics. The game was featured as one of TouchArcade's SwitchArcade Highlights, and as one of The Dallas Morning News' recommended horror games to play during Halloween, specifically recommending it to fans of Asian horror stories like Ju-On: The Grudge and Ring. Critics liked the game's writing and characterization; the characters were considered impactful, likable, interesting and distinct, with relatable issues, and the sympathy shown for the spirits, with the player having to get to know them, was well received. Famitsu appreciated the gradual introduction of the horror, which drew…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Spirit Hunter: NG is a horror focused visual novel. A rebellious teenager finds himself playing a game of death that involves hunting angry spirits. Thematically, it's top tier. The look of the game, the writing, the concepts behind mechanics, plot etc. I'm-all in. They even have OPTIONAL "Scary Mode" settings that allow for pop up jump scares during investigations. I've set it to the scariest level and while its not particularly scary for me, it's a nice touch. A little surprise every…

There is a discussion about this crash on steam that was started May 23rd 2020, that was over a year ago! And it still hasn't been fixed! The only thing the other people got back when they contacted the Devs was that they should contact Steam for a refund. I'm extremely frustrated about this. The Spirit hunter games are really good but I wouldn't buy them on steam if I had a second choice.

If you are planning on getting this, saver every moment because the story is extremely interesting and worth reading Would recommend this when it goes on sale because you know its 50$.

neutral · AI labelView post →I looked forward to playing the sequel to Death Mark, but after 3 hours I'm bored to death. The pace is way too slow and the dialogues incredibly bland. Playing in scary mode but I didn't get one scary moment. Seems it's 10% ghost story and 90% messing around with stuff you find. And on top of that the controls are horrible. A real time waster.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The first one was much better, hands down. It really pains me to rate this series negatively, the horror vibe and the beautiful art definitely draws me in and now I can only hope the third one will stay clear from this sequel. The main reason that made me dislike this - it has none of the well-paced urgency and smoothness in introducing/revealing the story of the spirits but merely oscillates between a tediously dull pacing or "suddenly urgent" feel that doesnt match the storytelling.…

It was just six months ago that we got Spirit Hunter: Death Mark on PC, a horror visual novel that seemed to go under the radar for most. It certainly did for me, as I had pretty much forgotten about it until I saw Spirit Hunter: NG pop up on Steam. Given that, I decided to give NG a go to see what the series was all about. Although it is technically the second game in the series, the stories occur independently of one another,…

Following the first death mark game we get the second one that follows a very fiesty protagonist along with a different doll this time and solving mysterious supernatural cases. There will be some comparisions with the first one in my writeup. Story: Execution perfection! This story has mainly three endings, the story is altered widely through the survival of your friends. Because even though the…

For example, in one part, you need might find it easier to know the Japanese word for "wing" to complete a puzzle. The art and the overall story are the main selling points of this game. I absolutely loved the character art and how expressive the characters can be. But what really stands out the monster art, which is incredibly disturbing and…

I completed Death Mark on the Nintendo Switch, and then instantly when I saw this game being made, waited patiently and then sinked my teeth into the spiritual successor. If you enjoy visual novels with a tense atmosphere and played Death Mark (the previous game) I have to highly "HIGHLY" recommend this game to anyone who is interested in these sort of games. I…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not as good as the original, IMO, but still a solid game. The story is well crafted, with plenty of twists, turns and deductions you have to make to understand the game, although thanks to the multiple choice nature of the game you can just as easily get through by blindly spamming options and savescumming until you get the good ending. The ghost hunting follows a very similar structure to the previous game, with info gathering, item collection and physical progress made amidst hauntings by…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A visual novel when you want some scares, but also get them from bad design Having played the first title of Spirit Hunter: Death Mark, I was a little let down by some of the gameplay elements. Well this game is worse. There are too many events with multiple choice questions that don't make too much sense to me. When failing those you have to start the section over and over until you get it right. It did not appeal to me at all and I really dislike those parts. In the end I had to play with…

Spirit Hunter: NG is a visual novel type of adventure game with horror elements sprinkled all over it. This is actually also one of those titles I hope to have a third option other than "Recommended" and "Not Recommended". The Good: · Solid story…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Horror/mystery visual novel + interactive discovery/exploration + quick time events (?) 8/10 Highly recommend playing with scary mode on, makes the investigation part of the game real fun. Be warned, unlike its predecessor it only gives a measly FOUR save slots, so having well placed saves is gonna be crucial for people gunning for all the endings or gallery graphics. If you mess up and override an important save slot, that's between you and G*d. The characters were interesting but felt a…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Spirit Hunter: NG is not a game, it's a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure e-book that's been dumped on Steam masquerading as a game. As a visual/interactive novel, this doesn't feature any notable gameplay, it's just a lot of clicking through badly written dialogue that would never have been accepted or published in print, which poses the question, "How did something this badly written end up on Steam?". To answer that question: When someone hoping to become an author is unable to get published in…

neutral · AI labelView post →It's ok. Ultimately I don't recommend or not recommend this game. There are better games to play out there, but it's not the worst thing I've ever experienced, I guess. I prefer the story, characters, and monsters of Death Mark. However, one thing I can't stand about both games is that they both overly sexualize their female cast, and the violence against them. Like, there's a scene of an unconscious woman at one point, and the CG is an overt close-up of her breasts. It really takes me out of…

I played SP:DM and enjoyed the absolute hell out of it, giving the game a solid 8.5/10. However, what Death Mark laid as far as ground work, NG ripped up and started a fire with it. The controls are mid at best, I really didn't like the forced arrow keys movement, or really interacting with things in the game. The characters weren't all that great, I had a lot…

Set against the backdrop of 1990s Tokyo, the game follows a troubled protagonist drawn into a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →👄 First and foremost, it's still a top-tier for fans of mystical ghost stories. Unlike lame edgy horrors, it manages to be grotesque at the right moments, not just for the shock value. It retains much of the first one's charm, including exploration, puzzles, victory choices, a well-developed atmosphere, beautiful visuals & soundtrack. The characters' roles in the story have been expanded, allowing you to get to know them better. It's very good as a VN, thanks to its concise narrative without…

That said, I'll be going over the differences between this game and the previous one: +/- Unlike the first game, this one is MUCH more character focused, with characters that stay with you during several cases and even the whole game.
