What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 178 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (4,230 of 5,180 positive).
Players praise the gorgeous hand-drawn art and fluid movement. [1][2][3] Some find the horde combat chaotic and tedious. [4][5][6] The game is short but offers multiple endings and replayability. [7][8][9]

This is a mostly competent metroidvania with a satisfying Yggdrasil skill tree (which uses gold dropped by enemies), satisfying traversal and movement mechanics (WAY superior to Hollow Knight in this regard), and mostly fluid and satisfying combat. It is weakened by its over-reliance on horde mechanics, which introduce difficulty by overwhelming you with on-screen spam. I'm not a fan of this design philosophy, and I …

8/10. Very fun albeit short game. I love the lovcraftian elements! I wasn't sure how well the medtroivania rouge like combo would work but they do it very well. Takes about 12 hours to beat, but there are 3 endings so its worth a replay or 2. definitely recommend if you have a rouge-like addiction like me! :D

I love how the game is non-linear and I can just go exploring in whatever direction I want, collect currency, and upgrade my character in whatever way I think is most beneficial to my gameplay style. And I also love the hand-drawn artwork. Gorgeous.

70% of the 178 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Sundered®: Eldritch Edition. The complaint that keeps coming up: horde mechanic feels overwhelming and tedious. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
The game received overall positive reviews with an aggregate score of 74/100 on Metacritic. Leif Johnson of IGN rated the game 7.8/10, calling the game's hand drawn levels "impressive" and its boss fights "epic", but criticized the random enemy hordes as just leading to "random deaths" and said that the randomly generated levels were not the same quality as the pre-designed ones. Mike Williams of USgamer rated the game 4/5 stars, calling the game "beautiful" and also praising the sound design and ambient background music. He criticized the game for forcing the player to backtrack and expressed disappointment that achieving the "better" ending would likely mean forgoing the "cool" powers the…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Horde mechanic is fine, though the enemy types are relatively lackluster, environments are beautiful and the obstacles are cool. My main issue with this game is obstacle, level, and enemy design and how it relates to gameplay. 17 hours in and so far I've unlocked double jump, and a big laser cannon with 4 shots. I mention this because your character starts with a wall jump, basic attack combo, a finisher, and finally a really big dodge roll that's better for traversal than actual dodging.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TL;DR: My opinion on Sundered is very mixed. It does some things right, and it can be a fun experience, however it messes up several key factors, and that ends up detracting from the experience massively, making it very frustrating and grindy. Wouldn't recommend unless you're willing to put up with some of its frustrating aspects in order to experience the good parts of the game (the Bosses). This review is spoiler-free, i played the game for 20 hours and finished it once on Hard. I do want…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TL;DR: It's mid. I'm not disappointed I played it and/or spent money on it, but wait for it to go on sale, and don't expect Hollow Knight or Nine Sols. The story is forgetable, combat is mash-tastic, but the skill tree/perks and boss fights make for a decent experience. Full review: Overall, I'd say this is mid. It's art style is good, the skill tree is fun, and the perks you get are random, so you have to adjust your playstyle for what you have... until you have most or all of them, and you…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bought this for the coop but it really didn't deliver. The second player character is just a shell, doesn't have health, isn't able to collect items or interact with the world except to attack enemies. I would say maybe this would be good to play with a child who can't yet handle the timing required in an action game, but the platforming would probably be too difficult for a child. The biggest problem isn't that, though, it's that the game is boring. The map isn't very helpful. All of the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Oooh it's from the creators of Jotun, that explains a lot. Great visual style, but have no idea what makes a good game. Tedious is the key word here. * Most mobs need at least a full combo to die and they come in swarm. * Progress from A to B is mostly going through empty rooms. * Progress tree is too complex for its own good, without any interesting abilities to wait for. Seen like 4 enemy type, then palette swap to stronger variants. I had enough. Clearly a step up from Jotun, still…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After Jotun (which I could only beat because of the tremendous amount of hours I spent in Hades I + II), it seems like the developers at Thunder Lotus Games made freedom and ease of movement a top priority in their next title. And it really paid off. The abilities, the combat, the exploration, and the discoveries, everything in this game is so much fun. The sense of progression with the central skilltree is really nice, and I very much enjoyed piecing the story together. It's not a large game,…

positive · AI labelView post →I rarely leave reviews, which i acknowledge is a personal failing of mine. However - I loved this game so much that seeing it somehow have a "mixed" review status over the past 30 days compelled me to leave this. My favorite Metroidvania of all time. The roguelike elements enhance every aspect, though they did take me a little "getting used to". The abilities feel incredible wihthout ever trivializing a room or section. Traversal is amazing and a delight. The story and lore are evocative and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is not particularly bad, it's just pretty mind numbing. The art it's what i enjoyed the most, the style is quite unique and it makes some aspects of the game more bearable. The story is kinda cool, but it's not relayed well and if you do not pay attention well you'll miss it. There are 3 different endings, which is cool, if it wasn’t that to expirience all three you need to make 2 separate playthrough, and you’ll not wanna play this again after the first. The gameplay is…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not worth your time. Save slots seemingly can't be overwritten even after beating the game, which makes getting the 3 endings with 3 slots only possible if you arent an idiot, which I certainly was when I first played this. I personally hate the skill tree, I ended up just running loadouts for money only and farming the 1st area's boss to get maxed out, and I see lots of guides telling people to afk for money which speaks to a very flawed progression system. Combat outside of bosses is a mess…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →They mean it when they describe this game as chaotic. On early game, that can feel frustrating. After you get some upgrades and corrupt some abilities though? You feel like a god killing all those enemies like it's nothing. I think whether you'll like the game or not heavily depends on how patient you are to get through the frustrating start. To me, Sundered is a good game that features some genuinely insane design choices. The unlimited enemy horde rooms are definitely one of those. These…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →the randomized corridors between sections of the map and the endless hordes of enemies ruin what could have been a really fun metroid-vainia game. the joy of memorizing a map and mastering its obstacles just inst there when there is no map and the enemies infinitley spawn. very pretty though.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →grind grind grind. if i want grind then i would play some mmo. what's progress even about in this game? developing some real skills? constant spam of horde of mobs do not show nothing. What is point of those horde?! if im close to finnish those mobs then another wave's appear and over and over, even when i fight with bosses those show up wtf?! poinless waves, pointless game
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The art and the soundtrack are incomprehensibly good and work together to produce a magnificent atmosphere of the eldritch beating down on existence, the horde mechanic as much hate as it gets from others, seems quite fitting for the mood that the game is trying to set. You are not supposed to have chill time, the randomized levels not letting you get comfortable with layouts also tracks. I just wish there was more.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just 100% the game, loved everything about it. Did wish the story telling could be a little bit more clear, but definitely one of my favorites.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I dont even know what to say about this. It"s a very forgettable experience. You walk through the same areas over and over to collect treasures and abilities and fight monsters, shiny monsters, mini-bosses and real bosses. The later are actually nice because they are huge and require some practice before you"re able to beat them. The game is surprisingly linear in my opinion, because you're missing abilities to continue. But once you have those it adds a new movement mechanic which feels…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →it looks cool, but plays terrible; the controls feel sloppy, the endless hordes of enemies i find nothing but annoying, the bosses have unique designs but fighting them is not fun at all.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The art and sound design are pretty good the rest is mid.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The biggest disappointment of this game is that it was made by the same studio as Spiritfarer, a vastly superior game in literally every aspect. So presumably, someone over there knows (knew?) how to make a good game. But Sundered ain't it. At. All. So, where to begin? I'll start by saying I want to like this game. I really do. But by the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch, it's annoying AF to play. Here's why: Infinite enemy spawns across certain areas of the map is a concept that sounds great on…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sundered is a smooth, but short, metroidvania wrapped in a Lovecraftian sci-fi shell. The combat feels incredible, the skill tree offers another layer of character progression, and the world is well designed with sequence breaks and secrets to discover. I enjoyed it enough to do two playthroughs, one for each ending. The two endings require you to pursue different unlocks for your character, drastically altering the way you play the game. The “Embrace” path of corrupting your abilities…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Meh-troid/roguevania with a lot of grind and repetition. Difficulty is mostly due to just not having grinded enough for stats/tree boost because sometimes waves of enemies are just covering your screen where I don't even feel like its a skill-issue with proper combat placement/navigation. Anyways a bit of a let down because otherwise the exploration + roguelite elements are cool but it gets repetitive and tedious after a while
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Awesome game 11/10 art and effects
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Interesting take at metroidvania genre. Movement is fluid and all skills have use through the exploration and battle. Character development (skill wise) feels rewarding. The map is very well done - it has markers for important rooms so you don't get lost after getting some ability required to unlock a door or jump to a far ledge. The bad side of Sundered is the lazy enemy design. Formless blobs of tentacles shooting wall-piercing projectiles or darting through the screen at the speed of…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Please play Spiritfarer. This game feels like an early game from a studio figuring out ideas. A rougue-like metroidvania is a very interesting concept, that makes the game feel very samey. Although the 20 hour for full acheivement playtime does circumvent this by having difficulty and ability modifications (Until you spend 2 to 4 hours doing the same pathing looting for perks and shards across two saves). Roughly half the bossfights feel very satisfying once you learn to dance the dance, others…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great concept, setting and art, but could not get on with the horde mechanic.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bought this game on sale as it had really good reviews for a metroidvania. Unfortunately, this is a bland game that fails to give any guidelines as to what to do or how to do it. You're immediatly stuck in a maze with sporadic enemies and closed gates all around. Boring to the max. Yes, it's quite beautiful, but doesn't make this game any good. Combats with enemies are chaotic, and messy. I really can't recommend this game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Another game that could have been a masterpiece, but suffers from heavy flaws in various aspects of design. Starting with how monotonous, dull, uninspired and empty the locations feel. But there's much more that could have been better. Overall, I recommend it, but just barely, and because it's a bit different from most metroidvanias; because, damn, it's frustrating that this could have been such a good game and ends up being ultimately mediocre. The lore is a shallow mess, the voice of the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I... have a lot of mixed feelings towards this game. I WOULD recommend to give it a shot and form your own opinion, but do it only with the full knowledge of what lies ahead. The good: I do appreciate the effort that went into this game They did a good job in gatekeeping you from areas that you shouldn't access yet Animations are smooth and pretty Whole fictional language was made! Even though it feels like impossible to read gibberish.. The bad: I think it's a bit pricy for what it…

neutral · AI labelView post →I don't know why the recent reviews are so negative. My husband and I played through the whole game with no issues. I tend to find a lot of bugs in games without trying, and nothing game breaking ever happened for us. I'm also TERRIBLE at platformers but I still had a good time. The art and animations were fantastic. The backgrounds and designs of the enemies were a 10/10 for me. Gameplay wise.... the smaller enemies are a little less memorable, and some a little annoying to deal with.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There's a lot to like about this game, but there's a few issues here and there so I hesitate giving it a thumbs down. I will say, I'm still going to be buying games for you guys cause you have good ideas, and I know you can execute on them. My 3 biggest gripes on this game is: 1. Mob fights. They're so random, and there are parts where they are literally endless. I spent 5 mins in an area killing every enemy on my screen, only for 10 more to pop up. It's so much, and combat isn't hard per se…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unfortunately, the game makes the mistake of making the Metroidvania experience procedural. People play Metroidvanias to admire the art that others create. This game throws that concept out the window. I did have fun, though, since I also like roguelites like Dead Cells. Still, I don’t recommend this game to players who are looking for a Metroidvania. The graphics are still very pretty, though.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sundered is well within my top 50 games of all time, possibly even top 25. A game that has few flaws and even fewer equals. Sundered is a metroidvania. You play as Eshe, a woman wandering a wasteland when she finds what she’s looking for, an underground military facility containing all sorts of eldritch secrets. Someone messed up, and brought something greater than us into this world, and we all suffered for it. You will either end that suffering, or become the arbiter of it. There is very…

positive · AI labelView post →Possibly one of my new favorite metroidvanias. Honestly just the shift in how combat is handled makes this a wonderfully unique experience. Enemies aren't in fixed places on the map, rather they will swarm you after a certain amount of time (or swarm you nonstop in some areas), leaving you with options to try and rip through the horde or flee. Even when you're taking them out in a couple of hits the sheer size of some of the hordes keeps it feeling frantic in the best way. The different paths…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really enjoyed it. Looks gorgeous, sounds gorgeous, and plays- Well it plays great too, up until the end of the third region and its boss, where you gain the ability (and the requirement) to use the grappling hook - and that thing just does not work well on a keyboard. I had to lower the difficulty at that point, which felt kinda disappointing, but if you have a gamepad, I'm sure this game would be an unquestionable recommend. Without it, eh, you have been warned. Still, at least for me as a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An awesome metroidvania for those who may be tired of mainstream media! Exploration is rewarding, the melee-based combat feels truly satisfying, and the way the game tells the story is freakin' awesome, too! Just don't rush into things. Learn, and decide for yourself. It feels truly satisfying to master your own style. Take your time, and enjoy all that Sundered has to offer~
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this is a beautiful game that can get frustrating at times but is overall a solid challenge with rewarding accomplishments
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Recommendation A Metroidvania with roguelite elements, set in a Lovecraftian sci-fi world. With lovingly rendered hand-drawn visuals and an excellent ambient soundtrack, Sundered innovates on the genre by adding some roguelite mechanical mainstays like procedurally generated map chunks, talent trees, and temporary buff shrines. Unfortunately, while this combination certainly makes for an interesting gameplay experience, the two halves compromise each other mechanically, preventing the game…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Solid experience, could be longer tho. There are 3 paths/endings,so u can play quite a bit I guess. The best thing for sure is the atmosphere, boss design and the combat. If u are H.P Lovecraft fan, this one is a must. Combat is extremely satisfying visually, control wise and in terms of sound. Overall a breath of fresh air for Metroidvanias/Roguelikes. I rly enjoyed the "horde" aspect of the game, keeps u on edge at all times. Solid 7.9/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've played this game only for one hour... and got bored. The aesthetics are really strong, but there's no substance yet. I might give it another chance and hopefully I'll remember to update this review, but it's a shame that it takes so long to get going. I've met four enemy types and some recolors, but I've stopped paying attention because I just mash the one button and they die all the same. I've yet to encounter a boss when I would have defeated three by now in your average metroidvania.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Another unfair powerspike. I think I’m done. Level 1: Okay, maybe decent. Level 2: Suddenly everything has more HP, nasty debuffs, and absurd damage output. The difficulty spike is not fun – it’s frustrating and feels unbalanced. Instead of a fair challenge, you get punished. I wanted progression, not punishment. Honestly? I'm tired. Games should be exciting, not demoralizing. This one just reminded me why gaming doesn’t feel rewarding anymore. Uninstalled. Trying to get my money…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I enjoyed this one quite a bit. It has a mash-y action-y style to the combat, but it's difficult enough that you actually have to be mashing the right buttons, not random buttons, if you don't want to get sent back to home base. The challenge is mostly based on quantity of enemies rather than learning a single enemy's tactics, having "hordes" swarm you at time, and some areas they come infinitely and your goal is just to get through the area and collect anything you're after along the way.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Neither the gameplay nor the story is good enough to bind you to the game and make you finish it.

They come randomly and without warning. This would become annoying if Sundered didn’t have great movement abilities that you slowly accrue. There is insane mechanical depth to the movement system, and…

The pseudo-randomness means I can learn enough of the map, but still have exploration to do. Sphere grid? Yes plz. Death let's me spend my points? Feels good. Bosses are some of the best. The combat feels fantastic, movement is great (using a controller). Lots of light, easy combat moments broken up by dealing with hordes of monsters. The choices of what to do with your abilities makes replay great. I've…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like a lot about this game, the art is clean, the map is very well layed out and clear, the combat is fine. What I DONT like is the grind. Playing normal difficulty the left side boss basically one taps me with half its attacks, and upgrades take such a long time now, costing roughly 700, where the average trip is getting me maybe 2000, and thats with a fairly high luck investment and running magnet, stopping to smack all the valuable drops I come across. This isn't a bad game by any…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Playing through the resist route, after defeating Nyarlathotep and the Trapezohedron, Eshe will run to the right of the screen into the spikes and die during the narration. There doesn't seem to be anything I can do to prevent her from running into the spikes. After she dies, I'll be brought back to just before the boss battle and have to do it all over again. I've beaten the final boss twice and both times this has happened.
