Sunset Overdrive
Developer Insomniac Games, Blind Squirrel Games
Sunset Overdrive is a 2014 action-adventure video game developed by Insomniac Games and published by Microsoft Studios. It is set in a fictional metropolis called Sunset City, where the company FizzCo has launched a new energy drink which has turned the people who drank it into mutants known as Overcharge Drinkers. The player controls an employee of FizzCo, who gets trapped in Sunset City when it is quarantined, and… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

Ran into 3 gamebreaking bugs within 40 minutes of play, including being unable to fire and a hard crash when trying to save. Oh, and the game claimed a corrupted save on first run. I'm sorry man, but I don't care how good this game is. It's 8 years old, this should be sorted out by now.

I bought this game by mistake. I meant to get Hi-Fi Rush, which I'd heard was very good. Excellent mistake to make. This game is bonkers, but SUCH a nice surprise. Bizarre weapons, zany characters, a whole city to just go nuts in and smash things. It keeps going in increasingly off-the-wall-directions you can't possibly see coming. A shame it didn't do better because it is a HILARIOUS rush of adrenaline.

Sunset Overdrive is proof that a game can age without actually getting old. It does'nt feel old at all I finished in aroung 27 hours and this game felt amazing The movement alone carries the game. Grinding on rails, bouncing around the map, sliding on wires while blowing up mutants with the most unhinged weapons possible never stops being fun. The game basically tells you “the floor is lava” and suddenly traversal …

Sunset Overdrive was a real breath of fresh air. Fun, irreverent, and packed with collectibles and minigames, it’s a genuinely enjoyable experience from start to finish. It’s the kind of game that deserved far more attention and a much wider audience than it actually got. It’s definitely not a game you play for the story, but that’s not the point: the strength of Sunset Overdrive lies in its very dynamic, fast-paced …

You know that thing that you did as a kid where you imagined a figure running across buildings doing parkour during long car rides? Imagine that... but as a game.

Critics, per Wikipedia
Sunset Overdrive received "generally favorable" reviews from critics, according to review aggregator website Metacritic. The game's tone was praised by reviewers. Daniel Bischoff from Game Revolution praised the game's comedic elements describing them as "contemporary". He added that the game is one of the rare few that made him laugh while playing. Sam Prell from Joystiq appreciated the humor, and thought that its quality was boosted by the performance of the voice-actors. His opinion was echoed by Peter Brown from GameSpot, who found the voice acting in the game entertaining and believable. However, Prell considered some humorous moments "hit-or-miss". Andrew Reiner from Game Informer…

What are some games you think are fun for that? I picked up Sunset Overdrive on a sale, and the rail grinding is fine I guess, but it's just not clicking with me.

I think it can largely be credited to *Ratchet & Clank* for trendsetting and inspiring all the rest (even *Jak 2* had used some of *Ratchet*'s code after *Jak and Daxter [1]: The Precursor Legacy* didnt have any weapons). Sunset Overdrive's company was shuttered despite their success, for example. I can't say I've played through many games 3 times, so that's a testament to the love I have for it. negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't think any Xbox game would benefit more from a PlayStation port more than Sunset Overdrive. Emphasize that it's from the Spider-Man devs, treat it like a new release, and that could turn it into a big IP for Insomniac.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sunset Overdrive feels like someone mixed an energy drink with a comic book and then pressed “start.” The city is chaotic, colorful, and completely allergic to boredom. You don’t really walk anywhere — you grind rails, bounce off cars, and fly across rooftops like a caffeinated superhero. The story doesn’t take itself seriously at all, constantly breaking the fourth wall and throwing jokes at you like confetti. Combat is loud, ridiculous, and honestly a blast. positive · AI labelView post →Sunset Overdrive feels like exactly the sort of game that should be a cult classic if it weren't so irritating.
negative · AI labelView post →Gameplay: The movement is addictive. You never just walk; you grind rails, bounce off cars, and wall-run while firing ridiculous weapons. Standing still = death. Visuals: A gorgeous, neon-soaked comic book come to life. The cel-shaded art style ages perfectly. Vibe: The story is refreshingly goofy. It constantly breaks the fourth wall, mocks standard video game tropes, and refuses to take itself seriously. It’s pure, chaotic fun that respects your time. 10/10 would bounce on a taxi again.
