What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 187 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (4,535 of 5,070 positive).
Players praise the game's emotional story and beautiful visuals. [1][2][3] Some find the puzzles too easy and the controls clunky. [4][5][6] A few reviewers criticize the story as boring or the game as buggy. [7][8]

A tedious, trying experience. As one should expect, Syberia: The World Before is more story-driven and less focused on puzzles and gameplay. That in itself is fine. However, the story itself is agonizingly boring. I didn’t care *at all* about the characters, especially Dana Roze and Leon Whatshisface, so any time the scene switched to them I audibly groaned. Their “love in a time of war” story felt like elevated …

I'm so glad I took a chance on this game. It's a beautiful work of art. Syberia - The World Before shares some similarities in gameplay to the Life is Strange series, but with older characters, a wartime theme, and some puzzles. I did have to look up a few solutions online, but overall, the game holds your hand and guides you almost every step of the way. I laughed, I cried, and I was honestly surprised by some of …

One of the best games I've ever played. What a story, drama, characters, atmosphere, puzzles! No words needed. Thank you, Benoit Sokal.

What a wonderful game. I enjoyed every minute spent with Syberia - The World Before. The story had me hooked right from the beginning until the very last minute... and yes, I mean the very last minute. It's just such a well written game. A fine addition to the lovely Syberia franchise! And not only this, but the graphics are phenomenal. This is definitely one of the most breathtaking, picturesque games I've ever …

I'll start by saying that I've never played a Syberia game other than this one, and in general, I've played very few games of this genre. I found the game really good: the characters, the music, and the story—everything was well done, in my humble opinion. Perhaps I found fewer and easier puzzles than I expected, but I can't give a concrete opinion since I don't have any comparisons with other games like this. I …

Maybe if you understand how it works, you can see why it is so bad. When a developer compiles their game with Denuvo, Denuvo adds itself to various functions of the game (set by the developer but has defaults as well). Usually this includes at least the main game loop which runs every frame, but also to other functions in the game as well. I cannot remember if Denuvo is added to…

neutral · AI labelView post →After a more than 20 year franchise history, the Devs decided to turn Kate into a cringe Lesbian. If this was the first game in a series, a Lesbian character would be incidental to a good game. But the fact that the main character went from a married straight woman to a butch Lesbian is nothing but a forced political agenda that detracts from the game. Refunded.

positive · AI labelView post →I'm currently playing Syberia (2002) for the first time. I never played it when it was new because I didn't like the demo. But people kept praising it over the years so I decided to give it a try. I still have the same complaints I had back then but the story is nice.
neutral · AI labelView post →Looking for retro adventure games. i recently played Syberia, Resonance, The Samaritan Paradox and Lamplight City. I'm looking for games along the same direction: 90s/2000s style adventure games. It could be really old games or also retro ones that have been released recently. Do you have any recommendations on games you particularly enjoyed? Any information on Linux compatibility would be a plus. But these days almost everything works anyway, so it's not a big deal.

The Last of Us, Limbo, Inside, Bioshock: take all these games with amazing stories and you'll find that video game storytelling works hand in hand with superb gameplay design. neutral · AI labelView post →I don't know why they dragged this title into the Syberia series. The whole thing could have been a separate game, you could remove Kate and not much would change. It doesn't feel like a continuation of the previous games. I just couldn't get through the prologue, my disappointment was rising with each sentence. Instead of playing it myself, I watched the story on yt, and it doesn't feel like Syberia. Kate feels like a secondary character who acts out of character, and Oscar was reduced to the…

Both are where Kate has to repair the mechanisms. the first is the slider puzzle. On my PC the sliders are out of order so the slider in column 2 from the left cannot be moved. On his PC, all is well. This killed my progress. The second is the left side cylinder rotating puzzle. On his PC there is no hole where there should be a hole in the 3rd…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →They've once again missed the point of the game. The magic of Syberia is in its environment design where objects of interest naturally stand out against the background, so each interaction is deliberate and originates from player curiosity. In this one there is barely any visual indication for interactable objects, instead it relies on these UI circles that appear when your mouse comes within range. This stems from the "Unreal Engine"-style art direction. Although the environments are…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is actually more a movie (80% of time) than a game (20% of time). Nonetheless, this game is the final Syberia by Benoît Sokal and has an extremely rich story, a true legacy he left behind. RIP Mr. Sokal! Like stated, it is mainly a movie with few interaction and the puzzle are few.

positive · AI labelView post →Syberia (2021, Switch) Rating: 7/10 Fairly good writing, especially the diary early in the game, and a mysterious story that gets more involving as it moves along. Love the aesthetic of the world. Puzzles aren’t too hard, but I did get stuck a few times not being able to see tiny details. Enjoyed!
positive · AI labelView post →I'm late w this trend but still :P I LOVED this game #Syberia #comic
positive · AI labelView post →Pretty sure I read somewhere that this started out as an adventure game (Syberia style), you can definitely see those roots in some of the camera angles.
neutral · AI labelView post →Now this is lesbian anti-fascism and something else. How could someone invent this ... brownish substance instead of a story?
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I know I've said it a few times in the past, but Syberia is my personal favorite adventure game of all time. I hope the remake is good 😭.
positive · AI labelView post →A waste of time and money for the following reasons: 1. Story: Totally diverted from the infamous Syberia 1 and 2 astonishing events and fed up with promoting certain agendas. 2. Gameplay: Lengthy cut-scenes without skipping and dull puzzles without any real challenge. 3. Dynamics: Ugh... Basically, it's a total burnout of once a wonderful childhood game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Now this is a proper point and click! (unlike the 3rd game) Such a nice story, and fun puzzles. Before playing it I thought it has some sort of time travel, but no. Past events are told in stories or letters. The location is amazing with lots of automatons and great music. Pros: -Story and puzzles: quite good. Had fun with most of the puzzles and the story had some surprises. 9/10. -Music and sounds: these are good, sometimes even great, so 8,5/10. -Voice acting: the beginning is a bit rough,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Syberia 4 is a beautifully magical adventure! The original two Syberia games are recognized classics in the genre and The World Before is a true successor! Even on its own, this very solid game is quite decent. Disregard the cash grab failure that was Syberia 3 that meant little for the story (watch a recap), Syberia 4 starts at a good point that does not require much previous knowledge. The game could possibly be played as a standalone for new entrants to the franchise. The animations and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Wolf Among Us, and I imagine other Telltale games (but that’s the only one I played so far). It felt a lot like Life is Strange in gameplay and storytelling, even though it’s also a lot different. In a similar vein, point and click adventure games like The Whispered World, The Book of Unwritten Tales, or Syberia. The modern ones usually don’t have a failure state (as opposed to the infamous Sierra games), but unlike LiS you may get stuck on a puzzle.

neutral · AI labelView post →Oh my god. I played those when they came out, except the newest one. They were good for its time for the people who loved Myst games and then sought any adventure games that remotely resembled point-and-click adventures. We played really cool but definite imitators like Schism Mysterious Journey, The Longest Journey, Atlantis games, and The Journeyman Project. Then came a developer called Microids with another pre-rendered point and click: "Amerzone", everyone played that. Once we got used…
neutral · AI labelView post →Played the entire series together with my wife over the past two years. The first two Syberia were just as great as I remembered it from my childhood. Syberia 3 was a really bad game due to its camera and controls, while the story was still good and the music was just as good as always in these games. The World Before feels like playing 3, but improved in every way possible. It's still 3D and still has a bad camera, but it's acceptable. The same is true about the controls. The graphics and the…

neutral · AI labelView post →Next to **Baldur’s Gate 2** and **Icewind Dale**, which will probably take several more months at least, I’ve also been playing through the Syberia series. I’m now on **Syberia 3**, and I must admit it’s frustrating at times. The controls are awful. As an example: I literally had to frantically rotate the mouse for several minutes to rotate a crank ever so slowly. It’s a shame because the world of Syberia is one with real character, and even though that’s less apparent than in the previous…
negative · AI labelView post →The game asks little of its players, only time and willingness to go with the flow. Even the story's backdrop, a close parallel to Nazi persecution of the Jews, yields limited violence on screen. The puzzles were not challenging. The side objectives asked little more than thorough exploration. Cate's journey to locate the mysterious woman in the painting had very little highs and lows from start to finish. For the right player, this will be a cozy, breezy experience full of beautiful…

positive · AI labelView post →The locations look nice and pretty, and the presence of automatons here and there is a welcome reminder of the previous games. But this doesn't quite feel like a Syberia game. It's a pointless story full of forced personal drama with cheap emotional moments, war drama, resistance fighters, and a weird made-up nation, oppressed by a made-up fascist regime - there's really nothing intriguing or unique to hang on to. Character models and animations are too low-budget and janky, and yet they are…

positive · AI labelView post →Yes, at times it was corny, some plot twists were nonsensical and on the nose. The puzzles were mostly made for children. Some of the characters (although, not many) were irritating and two dimensional (I especially hated Katyusha). However: It's the first game in the series since the original Syberia that made me feel... Something. It made me feel engrossed in its world, it made me feel for Dana Roze. It felt... Personal. Emotional. Nostalgic even. In a way, I felt as a little kid again,…

positive · AI labelView post →An excellent sequel to the previous games in the series. The parallel timelines are beautifully excecuted and the story is very well written, although a bit predictable at times. The atmosphere and the slow pace are problably my favourite parts of the game. Some of the puzzles are a bit too easy for my taste though. I would have preferred a few more tricky ones.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not Recommended I finished Syberia: The World Before. I wish I hadn’t. This is one of the most frustrating and poorly designed adventure games I’ve ever played — not because it’s hard, but because it consistently disrespects the player’s time, logic, and intelligence. Yes, the game looks pretty. The environments are detailed and expensive-looking. That’s about the only consistently positive thing I can say. Everything else suffers from a lack of professional design discipline. Core…
