Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 217 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (272 of 314 positive).
Several reviewers note the puzzles are easier and less challenging than the original. [1][2][3] Some players miss the creepiness and voice acting of the original game. [4][5][6]

This game commits a pretty grave sin. In attempting to modernize the formula, it loses all the creepiness and charm of the original. Are the puzzles "better"? Maybe. You'll certainly get stuck on them less than in the original, but they're also all really easy, and in the post escape room era, you've basically seen all of these puzzles before. That's not how 7th Guest felt. The actors are now show in volumetric 3D …

I played the original back in the early 1990s when I was a teenager when it first released on PC CD-ROM and enjoyed it a bunch. It was completely revolutionary for the time, so comparing this remake would be really unfair since it's hard to beat an original masterpiece. This one has its own charm though, and you get it in both VR and flat screen for a very reasonable price. The original The 7th Guest cost $79.99 …

the remake, if it wasn't clear, is the VR game without needing VR. It's good, but lacking a lot of the charm of the original, plus the puzzles are WAY easier. Easier in that you might solve them accidentally on your first try. HUP HUP.

An overall passable experience. Most puzzles were relatively straight forward bordering on trivial, with probably 3-4 being a real challenge. For two of the puzzles, the challenge was more in divining the order of actions with the absence of any instruction rather than the puzzle itself being mechanically challenging or complex. Being able to determine between 'important' items and background scatter is rough. I am …

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →On the whole this is kind of a mixed bag. It feels like a smoothed down version of the original. It's technically competent and a fine enough time to play, but it completely lacks the charm of the original and the puzzles are generally a downgrade. It's not awful, but I can't see a world where I recommend anyone play this over the original which is also on Steam.

Coming from Vertigo Games and Exkee, if you love exploring and solving puzzles in a spooky setting this might be one to stick on your wishlist. > >Technically, this is not entirely new. neutral · AI labelView post →I cannot in good conscience recommend this game in its current state to anyone. This is the VR Remake they put out 3 years ago, but ported to flatscreen in such a quick, lazy, and obtuse manner that I am astonished it took 3 years to do so. Movement is incredibly slow (because it's the same one from the VR version), crouching is incredibly juddery (because you're meant to actually crouch in VR), and the puzzles are incredibly tedious to interact with because they have implemented the WORST…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As a longtime fan of the original The 7th Guest from the 1990s, I couldn't be happier with this modern reimagining. The developers have done an excellent job preserving the atmosphere, mystery, and charm that made the original so memorable. One of the highlights is how the puzzles strike a perfect balance between nostalgia and being distinct enough to stand on their own. Rather than simply recreating old solutions, the game offers a fresh take on the classics. I was also especially…

neutral · AI labelView post →One of the first great CD ROM games a lot of us enjoyed in the 1990s is bag. Is it any good? Hmmm... It's more polished of course as we've had 30 years of gaming technology since the original. It's got the ability to a slight better game intro. Downsides, the voice of Stauf just isn't the same. The original he was very dark, very creepy as he was a vile character, the latest incarnation is very competent but lacks the "creepy" vibe that so held us all captive. There silly bits that spoil a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A pale imitation of the OG, the puzzles are weak, the acting is weak, the house is weak, (no maze, no crypt, no laboratory, no galary, no secret passages, no supernatural events... ) In retrospect, I should have seen this was just a cash grab based on the name without the talent required to make it a classic. The OG pushed the state of the art in 1992, literally wrote their own 3D editing suite to produce the game. What do these developers have to show for themselves? A very weak escape-room…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tweaked and edited TL;DR Version: PROS - People who played the original 1993 game have a decent chance of liking/appreciating this game. Incredibly true to the original as the music has the main themes woven in, the house layout is virtually the same on the first/ground floor, it follows the same story beats with some holes filled in, has lines from first game as achievements, and one puzzle made it back in. It's a high-end keyboard point and click, with the (relatively) same campy story and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I remember playing this with my Dad on CD Rom when it originally came out. An absolute classic and I'm enjoying this remake so far. It's very much more of the same. Puzzles, Murder Mystery, FMV scenes in a spooky mansion. A few new mechanics including a crouch feature which I'm yet to use in the actual game, and a lantern that reminds me of the sight power in Undying. I do miss the uncanny creepiness of the original and while I'm not overly keen on the new Stauf, nothing is stopping us from…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For $20 I gotta say no to this one. The puzzles were very simple and this game focuses almost entirely on presentation over substance. One big annoyance was how the game just throws hints at you as you work through the puzzles, basically giving away the answer 10 seconds in. As if the puzzles arent easy enough, you got a little voice in your ear spoiling it for you. Then by the 4 hour mark you're essentially done with the game & the end 'final boss fight' is literally a simple board game (based…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was in my mid-teens when the original The 7th Guest came out and was a HUGE fan of the game so I was super excited when I saw this remake was coming out. I'll start off by saying that I really enjoyed this remake. I finished the game in 8.6 hours without rushing through anything. While the game is missing a bit of the creepiness that the original game had, I really enjoyed the modernization of the game and the brand new puzzles. Some of them were just OK but most of them were well done.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ok, lets clear the air. This is no different than the version that was released for the Meta Quest in 2023. No gameplay changes, no puzzle changes. But with the PC version you get a more high fidelity experience. If you want the max presentation of visuals and performance this is the version you want. If you value mobility and self contained experience then I would buy/stick with the Quest version. I have a beast machine so really enjoy the increased visuals and frame rate the PC version…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →75 / 100 Never got into the original back-in-the-day, innovative at the time, sure, but I always found movement clunky & gameplay dull. Fast-forward to the remake & gone is the limited movement & dark, creepy atmosphere - offering now free movement in a brighter, highly detailed, character filled mansion. Still, the eerie portraits littering the mansion walls are unsettling when you shine your lamp at them & Stauf's narration is often gloriously egotistically unhinged. Mystery Rooms generally…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is not enough for today. Though having much better technical possibilities today the game falls short in many ways. The graphics, while trying to capture the original do not deliver any atmosphere. The digitized ghost movies from the original feel much better than the mix of 3d model and digitized actor today. Movement: Either you do it like the OG, moving premade paths directed by arrows, or you do modern movement as you would expect in 3d games, but then make it feel like you walk.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly pretty good. I never played the original so I wasn't sure how much I would like it but I had a good time and the puzzles weren't too tough. Honestly some of them were surprisingly easy. The atmosphere of everything was well done too and I always enjoy me some FMV games so I liked all the moments with actual actors put into the game. Full disclaimer I was sponsored to stream it but played for far longer than I was paid too because I honestly enjoyed it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Visually it's a nice remake of the original with new puzzles. However, the puzzles aren't particularly challenging by any means (Most can either be solved through pattern recognition with trial and error, or just plain brute forced) and as a result it falls short. The last "puzzle" is especially egregious, being a buggy mess of a board game that is a less fun version snakes and ladders.

neutral · AI labelView post →for 90% of the game i enjoyed as they were puzzles. the final challenge was a RNG hellscape that Ruins the entire game. the Original was fun and the story is good. i just wish the developers didn't put in one of the crappiest mini games to beat the game. as a side puzzle sure. but to be blocked by RNG ruins the entire game for me. i am glad i got the game for free but even free i want my time back as i have spent to much time in RNG hell and now cant finish.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I grew up playing the original 7th Guest. I loved the puzzles. I loved the eerie tone. Heck, I even loved constantly hearing "I won't have to start again". This game is sadly.... a pale shadow of the original. I was hoping so much that it would be a good, modern remaster of the original. There are so many brilliant puzzle games and numerous suspense/horror games out in recent years, so I know it's possible. However, this game serves as merely a sterilized retelling of the original. The…

neutral · AI labelView post →A great remake of the classic adventure game, full of love and respect for the original. This remake enhances the original in many aspects, while staying true to its premise and basic gameplay loop. Yet, it does not make the original game redundant in any way. Both games are very much worth being played through. In the remake, the house layout has slightly changed (a few changes make more sense, but also make the navigation less "ghostly"), and the puzzles are different, for the most part.…

Also, actually enjoying the new take on puzzles. Struck huge childhood nostalgia chords. Will definitely find time to play all the way through soon and take the time to find out what's inside...
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Solid remake of the original which I have a lot of nostalgia for. The puzzles are a little on the easy side, but it captures the atmosphere and the 3D FMVs are very cool.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →growing up as a child i loved this game. as an adult i love the remastered version. i can't help but compare it to the 1993 version and i think it is more of a loosely based idea rather than a true remake. things feel familiar yet different. i think they hit the sweet spot between past and present. the AI acting is a bit cheesy but so was that of its time on its original run. so far i'm enjoying myself so i'd give it a thumbs up

The mystery is intriguing and the atmosphere is spooky but not too dark for my taste. The puzzles were sometimes challenging but didn't melt my brain. neutral · AI labelView post →I liked and enjoyed the game - although one puzzle I couldn't complete with my Steam Deck - had to switch to my laptop for that one - other than that, it was perfect for the deck - be warned, though, the game is creepy I'm a slow player, you'll probably finish it in a third of my time :) - I played the previous as well, spending 13,5 hours on it - the 25th anniversary edition was good as well; no wonder the mansion seemed familiar
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nice puzzle game with great atmosphere and a story. If you like games like the room you might like this. Pros: *Atmosphere *Gfx *Acting/Voice acting *Story is decent but not overly complex Cons: *Short/Price Despite the short playtime i dont regret buying the game. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As someone who played the original back when it was new, I was a bit nervous coming into this remake. It turned out to be a bit of a mixed bag for me. The devs clearly love the original game and wanted to do it justice, but I was disappointed to learn that they did all new puzzles for it rather than reworking the original puzzles. I loved the way the house was done, now fully explorable rather than point and click, and the new acted videos fit so well that at first I thought they might be…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Even though the puzzles pale in comparison to the OG 11th Hour, the game still offers a nice experience. The coin collectibles also add a layer of accessibility if one is unable to find a solution to the puzzles (coins allow you to completely bypass the puzzles) I'm was a little put off by the finale "puzzle" as it does require some strategy, but is heavily dependent on dice rolls. The rest of the puzzles were manageable and not overly difficult if you're heavily into the puzzle genre. The…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The puzzles are tricky without being obtuse, and the hint coins being plentiful and easy to find (for at least most of them) makes the game accessible for those who may need extra help. The actors are top notch and watching scenes from different angles adds replay value
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The original 7th Guest is the game that made me fall in love with puzzle games back in the 90's. This is such a wonderful homage to that with all new original puzzles, cleaned up story/backstory and a whole lot of nostalgia fun. I couldn't put it down and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it!

I recommend it mainly to hardcore puzzle fans, everyone else can safely pass on this one. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The 7th Guest Remake along with The 7th Guest VR are very worthy of the original 7Th Guest Game! Although I prefer Robert Hirschboeck as Henry Stauf, the actors nevertheless do a stellar job at portraying the foibles of each guest! The puzzles are not as complicated as the original game, but they do a great job of using 3D space to make for quite a wonderful experience! I hope that more in the Stauf line of puzzle fun will come from Vertigo Games!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fine game ruined by a terrible end game. I don't know who thought it was a good idea to put a stupid board game style "boss fight" into a puzzle game, but they need to rethink the career choices. Having to rely on bouts of chance to finish a game ruins the entire experience. Don't buy unless you want to waste hours of your time in frustration.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This was a Beautiful homage to the original i love that theres more context and more story to this. the puzzles were a bit easier and the maze will be missed but this was a solid wonderful game well done my only complaint was i wish we gould dogle some of the OG soundtrack on or off i loved that soundtrack

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Cool little game. A bit expensive considering its only 4 hours long, but the cutscenes with real actors then polygonized are so well done and endearing, the puzzles are all unique and mostly clear and telegraphed, and the atmosphere is great. maybe get on a small sale.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →fun little game. I was invested in the story. Puzzles were great. Nothing to crazy to make you pull your hair out at, but if you lack patience they have a coin option for hints that is plentifully available. My only negative is i want more. It was kinda short and it felt like we jumped ahead in the story a bit quickly. But if you are looking for a fun few hours of puzzles def worth the pick up.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While The 7th Guest is a very important FMV point and click adventure that, along with the original Myst, helped popularize CDs as storage medium for games, I never particularly liked it. In fact, the first time I’ve ever fully completed it was about 12 years ago when I’ve decided to give the GOG release a go. I found the story to be way too cheesy, puzzles mostly annoying and the unskippable transitions between each screen got on my nerves. But then 3 years ago the game got remade for VR. And…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →5 hours of puzzling bliss (albeit on the easy side) and then the final puzzle isn't a puzzle. It's a dice roll. Seriously. **** ***. And no, candles, skipping rings, protection and double rolls doesn't make it forgivable. 7th Guest and Eleventh Hour were my two favorite games as a kid. Getting lost in spooky mansions with seemingly unsolvable around every corner was amazing (and sometimes they were unsolvable because you didn't have enough items/information yet). Everyone remembers Myst, but…

As a person who experienced the original 7th Guest as a young child (thanks for giving me a fear of the dark), I have to say I'm mixed on this one. I spent about 14-15 hours getting 100% of the achievements on NON-VR mode and I'm left rather conflicted. On one hand, yes I applaud the team the team that made this and all the effort that they put into this.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Enjoyed the game in general, nostalgia off the charts. Disappointed with how easy the puzzles were though. I remember the 7th Guest and 11th Hour being the epitome of point and click puzzle games, these just aren't on par with those. If you're looking for an easier challenge or you're not one for difficult puzzles then this is for you
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A unique and fun homage to the original. It captures the spirit but completely reimagines the story and puzzles, so it's not one to one, which I appreciated. Absolutely love the environment, style, and music as well. I'm also grateful the puzzles are still challenging but a lot more approachable and intuitive, and I really like the built-in hint system giving you levels of hint as well. Definitely enjoying the gameplay overall!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The 7th Guest is one of the biggest games of the FMV craze of the early days of CD software, and yet despite that I never played the original. My PC at the time was not powerful enough for such things, and by the time I had one that could the FMV fad had long since been over. So when I saw this full remake pop up in my Steam feed I figured this would be a great way to finally introduce myself to it. I guess this actually came out a couple years ago for VR first but I don't have that either, so…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played this game in full VR and it was fantastic! I played a bit of the PC version, and there's not much difference, so if you have the option I highly recommend playing the VR version of this game. The game itself is not scary, creepy vibes for sure but no jumpscares or anything that would make you ALT+F4 out of fear. The puzzles are solid, nothing is crazy difficult, there wasn't anything I needed a guide for but I did brute force solve a puzzle or two. I enjoyed the story well enough,…

It's not really a puzzle, more like a game of Trouble/Sorry, and it does feel like a bit of a wet fart of a final challenge, but the RNG is forgiving enough that you probably won't get stuck for TOO long. Even with that, this is an easy recommend. The acting, the atmosphere, the fact that it FEELS like I…
