What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 179 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (2,987 of 3,209 positive).
Players praise the game as a significant improvement over its predecessor, rewarding those who endured the setup. [1][2][3] Some reviewers note pacing issues and a repetitive structure, with the epilogue feeling unnecessary. [4][5][6] A few players express disappointment with the lack of consequences in the war narrative and dislike for the protagonist. [7][8][9]

With an entire game's worth of setup leading to a war that has been teased since a whole 4 games ago, just what kind of conflict will the writers weave, what kind of grey morality will our young party have to deliberate upon and what are the consequences they'll suffer for their choices, what wrenches will they throw in the characters' development and how will they stand in the adversity of an overpowering foe. …

MASSIVE step up from Cold Steel 1. The entirety of Cold Steel 1 is a prologue. Hours and hours of political set up and character introductions in a world already filled to the brim with personality. By the end of Cold Steel 1, I was feeling burnt out, frankly. Finally, with Cold Steel 2, we are back to the exciting and intricate narrative I've come to expect from Falcom. This amazing game is your reward for making …

After how CS1 ended you'd think CS2 would be popping off in the story department. For the most part nothing happens again for 90% of it. How is that even possible? This game also refuses to end. After the "final" boss there is a fan service dungeon that could have been a cutscene then another final dungeon/boss after that which is utterly pointless. On a positive note once a character rejoins your party you can …

So... I don't know why people don't like this entry in Trails, because gosh dang I love it, it paid up on all the setup from the previous game and then some. Heavily recommended.

Id say this is the best game in the Cold steel Saga, particularly this and Cold steel 1. Do not let the dated graphics put you off, Cold steel 1 and 2 is an amazing game.

Critics, per Wikipedia
The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II received "generally favorable" reviews according to review aggregator Metacritic. Famitsu gave the PS3 and PS Vita versions of the game a score of 31/40. Chris Shrive of Hardcore Gamer strongly praised the game for being "a modern JRPG masterpiece" with "the perfect blend of the classic JRPG formula mixed with contemporary features" concluding that "the emphasis on story telling and immense cast of memorable characters make the large time commitment worthwhile". Kimberly Wallace of Game Informer was similarly positive about the game's story and characters, but complained about the game's dull dungeon design. Despite the shortcomings, she still…

It was Dragon Slayer VI originally, a game that Falcom decided to create because they hadn't made a Dragon Quest-ish title yet, but wanted to show that they could do the Enix and Square thing, too. neutral · AI labelView post →One of my favorite video game romances takes place in the Legend of Heroes: Trails series. When first described on paper in a quick summary, it's something some people might roll their eyes at, but it's built very well. Something that had to be nailed down early about it was, it really couldn't be *optional*, based on "relationship score", or even happen on its own time. One of the best scenes in this duology centers around a huge character reveal, which puts forward the confession of love all…

Of course not, but so far it's IMO the best so far in the best JRPG collection of series of all time; the Trails series. It has well-developed character building, including NPC's, world…

In a game about civil war nothing actually happens, there is only one event which is a war crime and even that is portrayed as being done by rogue actors. The game is utterly terrified of actually SAYING anything which simply isn't good enough for a game about war
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have mixed opinions, and I'm a bit torn because like as much as I am interested in the trails series, for the most part, I did not enjoy CS2. What irritates me is that CS1 shares some of the issues with CS2, It was a troupe fest at times but the setup and dynamics more than made up for these shortfalls. It still felt like the game was sincere and interesting enough to keep me interested even if the direction it was going is not what I would have preferred. CS2 is where the flaws really…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Trails of Cold Steel 1 (ToCS1) and Trails of Cold Steel 2 (ToCS2) are not separate games: they are one game, awkwardly cut in the middle. Hence ToCS1 ends on a cliffhanger, and ToCS2 starts in the middle of the story. However, ToCS1 is a great game, with good turn-based combat, an excellent soundtrack and a long, well-written (if overly wholesome) story. Gameplay-wise, ToCS2 is a slightly improved version of ToCS1, with a new and almost-as-good soundtrack. And yet, I was disappointed.…
