KIDDING (but kinda not, I am never pressing that button >.>) I would best describe this game as an investigative horror walking sim due to it's very linear gameplay. That being said, it is by no means boring. You do just follow set paths but the eerie environments are very immersive, encouraging you to really…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Delicious dread, doom and gloom! SUPERB atmosphere with the one and only Doug Cockle (the only man together with Henry Cavill who can say HE IS GERALT OF RIVIA) voicing the main character/narrator......For little more than 20 bucks?.....A fair and proper deal!. Oh....The Occultist is a "adventurous" history driven walking simulator......Im pointing out this because a lot of PsEuDo-InTeLlLeCTuals actually complained about the lack of "action"......Are you even aware not every game under the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Finished the thing. Hiring one fancy voice actor does not make an entire game. You got trope after trope after trope and not a single original thought put into this, on top of that they overdo the cinematics to such an extent that it entirely kills whatever mood the game is trying to build, like actually making me genuinely laugh at how cheesy it is. Game's more of a comedy than a thriller, horror or whatever it is trying to do. Can't recommend this to anyone that is looking for something…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The trailers are pretty misleading. I was expecting something like 2018's Call of C'thulu, only with a protagonist more experienced in the occult. Instead, I got a boring, confusing walking sim with a jumbled theme and lack luster, uncompelling story. The general consensus on the community forums is that this game is really, really buggy, and I'm afraid I have to agree since loading a save has caused my game to become softlocked. I've requested a refund, and can honestly live with not…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Occultist is a psychological horror walking simulator with many puzzles and several minor stealth sections with vengeful ghosts. The story involves your character arriving to an eerie desolate Island, in search of your lost father. Places of exploration include a various houses, a hospital, an orphanage, a cemetary, a circus, and a huge manor. Primary gameplay involves exploration and using an occult "Pendulum" that can perform four occult mechanics. Your "Pendulum" can see items from…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I got to say, I enjoyed playing this game a lot more than I thought I would. I have never been one to be too fond of puzzles, games just have a habit of throwing you into a puzzle wishing you good luck. However this game actually makes the puzzles not too hard, however not too simple. I love how they have a way to not completely leave you in the dark, you have your handy dandy book to always remind you what you've found, and hint what you need to do with it. I'm not finished quite yet however…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →unreal engine 5 runs not so great here, and the game is *really* boring. Main character is monotone, jumpscares aren't very scary. Really no danger or atmosphere to speak of here, it's all pretty bland. The puzzles are very simple and aren't too crazy, just not for me ig.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i enjoy linear games. it has been so long since i had a new linear experience to sink my teath in. if you like spooky linear experiences this one is a nice choice
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The pendulum uncovers what the eye cannot see, but the clichés ahead are visible from a mile away. It may tread familiar ground, yet its eerie atmosphere and use of the pendulum make the journey strangely compelling.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I would give it a neutral review if I could. This game is for someone but not me, basic ghost style horror. Don't trust the tags on this one, there were no Lovecraftian elements that I could find. No madness or cosmic insignificance to be found.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Almost an hour in and I keep playing it hoping it gets better, but reading some of these other reviews I'm finding that doubtful. It's just been a boring walking sim so far with clunky 'puzzles' and a main character unable to go more than 15 seconds without narrating everything that's going on. Someone should remind the developer the power of show, don't tell.

neutral · AI labelView post →The trailers for this game suggest that it's some kind of a puzzle/investigation game where you have to exorcise/fight various ghosts in (hopefully) creative ways. In reality, it's a linear walking simulator with puzzles and ghost encounters that are so braindead they're basically just busywork. This wouldn't be a problem if the story was good or at least fun, but the story is generic, uninteresting, nonsensical, and poorly written. It's also mostly given to players in an exposition dump near…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Everything I expected, and more! Saying I have been waiting for The Occultist for a long time would be an understatement. I have been following its development since it was practically just a concept. I strictly refused to spoil anything for myself until launch day, and when it finally arrived, I played the whole thing from start to finish. It turns out five years of waiting was absolutely worth it. Now that we have the "I was already a fan before playing" part out of the way, let’s look at…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Whilst this was a good first attempt at a horror game from this developer, there were quite a few things that , by the end got rather tiresome. Firstly, The main character - Alan, voiced by (Witcher Geralt) Doug Cockle. To cut to the chase, he does a terrible British accent which only gets more annoying as the game progresses. It's such a shame as it seems like a massive step back and I would rather he just kept his US accent. Gameplay - You have access to some special abilities throughout…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game has to be a pass for me unfortunately. The mechanics of using the medallion are extremely cool, peering through the crystal to find random items and blood splatters allows for some cool story telling moments and revealing how bad things actually are. The atmosphere is incredible, the color and light usage sets a very strong moody and oppressive atmosphere. My main issue comes with the writing, I think when you're trying to set such a deep and dark mood, having the protag throw out…

neutral · AI labelView post →The trailers were somewhat misleading: while I expected a tense ghost hunt along the lines of Murdered: Soul Suspect, the game is actually a very grounded walking simulator focused on family drama. The shift in tone is jarring at first, but the experience is decent as long as you know what you're getting into. The gameplay is straightforward, featuring simple puzzles and chase sequences that aren't particularly challenging. The game flows smoothly without ever really frustrating the player,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Got to the final boss and dropped it. Playing this game felt like a chore I had to finish just to have the satisfaction of not letting this best me. I really enjoy adventure puzzle games, even if it's a linear experience, so long as it has fun and creative puzzles. The amount of handholding actively works against the player. Puzzle solutions are spoon-fed to you so often that it discourages exploration, trail-and-error, and creativity on the player's behalf. The talisman always makes a big…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I stumbled upon The Occultist trailer by accident on Yotube about a year ago. I am a supernatural horror fan, so the game looked promising to me. I cannot say I was hyped but I did add it to my wishlist and checked on it every few months. Two weeks ago, the game was finally released. I finished a blind playtrhough in 2 evenings and can now share my opinion. I usually begin with the story and atmosphere analysis, however, in this case I will start with the gameplay to keep the review flow…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This one slides in just over the bar. When I played the demo and then saw the game was on sale for $25 I thought, "I can't believe they're pricing this so low!" Then I played it. This game contains many of my favorite things: occultism, the supernatural, rituals, detectiving, f-ing Geralt, so I picked it up day one. The story is interesting, but gets boring as they pad it out with stuff like a fricken circus for some reason. The gameplay is meh as you're pretty much guided by your hand…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great graphics but way too slow of a burn and couldn't figure out a lot of the codes without Google. Needs more guidance.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I enjoyed the Occultist more than I expected, mainly because the atmosphere was the strongest part for me, as it felt creepy and dark. The character and level design were detailed and the puzzles were balanced with an interesting mechanic. Some moments in the game gave me some good scares and there were even some chasing/hiding scenes. The one thing which bothered me a bit was that in some situations it wasn't safe when you were solving a puzzle or reading notes. Other than that, it was a…

positive · AI labelView post →Excellent game. Loved every minute. The premise and story are very good and the game looks great. The voice acting is top notch especially since the main character is voiced by the actor who voices Geralt in the witcher games. I love the use of the pendulum for investigation and also for other uses that become learned along the journey through the game. i feel like the games length is perfect. I never once felt like i wanted the game to be over because the story was so interesting. The…

neutral · AI labelView post →Haven't finished it yet, but I'm loving it! I didn't expect to have many powers with the pendulum, I thought I would only be seeing other stuff with it, but the second power was nice and I loved the third one. The story is really nice and there are a couple jumpscares that I would have cut off. In any case, very recommended!

neutral · AI labelView post →I gave The Occultist 2026 a solid 9 out of 10. It brilliantly blends the eerie atmosphere of games like Resident Evil and Outlast with the storytelling depths of A Plague Tale and Demonologist. I loved the atmosphere, the unfolding story, and the ending it all kept me hooked. The puzzles were satisfying, too. If I could ask for improvements, I’d suggest adding a map and tweaking that rat-controlling mechanic. Overall, it’s a paranormal ride worth taking!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →At the Funhouse I got chased by a ghost, went down a ladder... Had to go back up the ladder and there was the ghost. Died. Leading up to that it's been like walking through a buffet of disappointment and frustration. Audio/dialogue lines seem to play in the wrong places at times. The vast majority of the ghosts and paranormal aspects are just annoying events that don't seem to add much value. Each area is this circular run around and find things so you can find other things. Fine for an…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pros: graphics smooth gameplay interesting visuals Alright but needs improvement: Story is good, but very badly delivered at some times. Reminding the players several times about important elements, which was unnecessary. Delivery and some plot moments are delivered quite stiffly and or out out of nowhere. Each location feels unique, but are missing depth. There is not a lot to do or look for and after some time feels very railroady. There are collectibles, but I think the game…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I absolutely enjoyed this game, as it ticked a lot of boxes of things i enjoy such as: Spirituality, Occult, Horror / Thriller, etc. The storyline was very interesting and i liked how it started, ended, and progressed. The puzzles in this game arent super difficult but still one has to think about things and cant just go and get them straight away. For me, as i was deep in some puzzles some of the random mini jumpscares freaked me out and i jumped in my seat so the horror side is pretty…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i had high expectations for this game, especially considering its price. unfortunately, near the end of my playthrough, i encountered a game-breaking bug that completely stopped my progress. i couldn’t continue the game at all. what makes it worse is that there’s no way to fix it other than starting over from the beginning. I had already progressed quite far, so replaying everything again just isn’t an option for me. this was extremely disappointing, especially after investing so much time into…

I do feel like that would've made the scary moments more impactful. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →7.5/10 The Occultist is a pretty good paranormal investigative game. Gameplay consists mainly of exploration and puzzle-solving while unraveling a mystery. The puzzles are logical and well designed. There are stealth sections with enemies you have to avoid, however most of them were not challenging or engaging. The high production values carried the game a lot, it looks and sounds great.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The reccomended specs on this game are honestly inconsiderate from a consumer's stand-point. Even running this game with LOW graphics and above the minimum requirement for speccs had my GPU running ay 95% just from starting it up. Was excited to play this game but now refunding it for being basically unplayable unless you have very high PC specs. I hope the devs will optimaize this game in the future.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →OVERALL: 8.5/10! I went into The Occultist without much expectation, especially after seeing some of the criticism floating around, and honestly, I don’t fully get the negativity. For me, the game delivers a really engaging and atmospheric experience that sticks with you long after you put the controller down. What stood out immediately was the atmosphere. The environments feel dense, eerie, and thoughtfully designed, with a constant sense of tension that doesn’t rely on cheap jump scares.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is a real positive surprise. It's not scary at all, although there are unnecessary and hefty jump scares. It would be good if the game grew into a series, because it has so much potential, I like the original gameplay with the pendulum, but the game still has too many puzzles, which, btw, are not particularly difficult, but can be tiring, because, they go one after the other continuously until the end of the game. The story is interesting, but nothing revolutionary, graphics,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While I enjoyed the puzzles, and did enjoy the core ideas of this game, I can't help but have a sneaking suspicion that this game's dialogue was written with the use of AI. The unnatural flow of the dialogue shares many similarities with how AI generated text sounds. It is a discredit to the talent of the voice cast, of course the first coming to mind being the protagonist, played by Doug Cockle, who once again plays a gruff man who hunts down monsters/ghosts and investigates happenings (sound…

positive · AI labelView post →Pleasantly surprised by the use of many mechanics, all equally important and fundamental: other titles use less than half of them for the whole game. The exploration, at the beginning guided in the initial area, then becomes completely free in larger zones, giving a strong sense of autonomy to the player. Defeat or death is never felt as unfair: with attention and observation it is always possible to outsmart the enemies.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I had fun for the first two hours when the game felt scary and the abilities were exciting. When the story tries to get more into detail is when most of the issues start to happen. You get morsels of lore from characters that avoid answering your questions, which was alright for the first few times but quickly got annoying the more it happened. You meet a ghost? They know your father. Will they answer anything? No. They give you a cryptic answer and then disappear. Every, single, time. The…

The game's visuals are good and impressive. Sounds and audio and especially voice acting (mainly by Doug Cockle, Geralt from the Witcher games) made a good performance in this game.
