What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 208 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (25,424 of 27,739 positive).
Players praise the game as one of the best Total War titles, with cinematic battles and strong historical atmosphere. [1][2][3] Many note the active mod community keeps the game alive, especially for Napoleonic history enthusiasts. [4][5][6] Some reviewers report the game is unplayable on modern systems due to crashes and compatibility issues. [7][8][9]

Great game, while not quite on the level of Fall of the Samurai its just Empire with improvements -- however, I have had had constant crashes to desktop and the game is basically unplayable/unenjoyable, which is weird because I don't have this issue with Empire or Shogun 2... Just FYI -- great game but unplayable rn with no decent solutions online.

Well, sir. On first sighting Napoleon: Total War, I naturally gave the order to purchase it; that's my style, sir! I downloaded the game and engaged the enemy. Major Lennox panicked, so I spent over 1,000 hours playing, and acquired all the achievements. I have written to Sega, sir, to state that the Creative Assembly team acquitted themselves most commendably in discharging both your general orders, to design a …

Look, the Russian winter attrition mechanic is total unbalanced ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, and Wellington is a massive camper who just spams infantry squares on hills with zero skill. Not to mention my support player, Grouchy, went completely AFK at Waterloo while Blücher stream-sniped my right flank. But despite the devs clearly being paid off by the British, there is absolutely no better feeling than micromanaging a Grand Battery …

Napoleon is a very different take on the Total War genre, very similar to Empire. It has a broad time frame set right in the middle of the Napoleonic Wars. You play as most major powers in Europe, and it has historical battles along with cool and interesting naval battles. This Total War has the best naval gameplay I've seen in a strategy game. The cons are the campaigns are weak, diplomacy sucks, and the AI is just …

This game is, in my opinion, the best strategy game that captures the Napoleonic Wars era, and the best installment in the Total War series. The game is incredibly beautiful, and the campaigns and battles are very realistic, especially the cannons and morale. It's a game that surpasses all others.

91% of the 208 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Total War: NAPOLEON – Definitive Edition. The complaint that keeps coming up: frequent crashes and freezes on modern PCs. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Napoleon: Total War received "generally favorable" reviews, according to review aggregator website Metacritic. The game and its developers alike were praised for a number of graphical and AI improvements, along with the new campaign features and multiplayer modes. IGN remarked that the "tactical battles are still some of the most amazing we've ever seen in any game." Gameplanet came to the same conclusion, stating that "graphically, the battles leave Empire in the dust, featuring five times more particles per effect." GameSpot praised the interface, saying that "[it] never feels cluttered, and the bulk of the screen is always devoted to the action." Other aspects of the game received a…

STATE OF DECAY 2, a bit. I'd take a TOTAL WAR with base management but a smaller -- oh shit it's CULT OF THE LAMB.
neutral · AI labelView post →AI slop is impacting all of our lives in different ways but the more recent way it has broken my heart is watching Creative Assembly ruin the Total War franchise with it with their rerelease of Shogun 2. I can only imagine how fucked their 40k game is going to look when it comes out.

neutral · AI labelView post →Game is still very much alive and has an active mod community even in 2026. If you're a serious Napoleonic history buff, I'd suggest installing NTW3 or another overhaul mod. The base game offers very little in terms of replay ability, besides the Europe campaign. Hopefully we'll get a remaster if Creative Assembly ever eventually decides to stop making out with Warhammer.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Still playing in 2026 with mods. If you are a fan of Napoleonic warfare, then this game is for you. It has improved gameplay compared to Empire: TW but is much smaller in scale. The modding community have continued to improve the base game. I hope we someday get a newer version of this gem with the Empire map and Napoleon improvements. An open-world style gameplay option between 1750 thru 1890 would be incredible with options for US civil war campaigns and smaller conflicts during this…

It doesn’t matter if you have a modern PC or lower all the graphics settings — they hang during campaigns or crash while loading battles. It’s a shame, because the concept is great, but the engine is so old and unstable that it’s basically unplayable in 2025. Hope Napoleon II ,…
