What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 226 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Overwhelmingly Positive (34,991 of 36,591 positive).
Players widely regard Medieval II as the best Total War game, praising its depth and charm. [1][2][3] Many reviewers highlight the game's active modding community, which extends its replayability. [4][5][6] Some players report technical issues, including crashes and launch failures after a Steam update. [7][8][9]

after apparently the latest steam 64 bit client update, the game actively fails to launch under any circumstance, including any and all tricks (manually creating the config file, compatibility mode, reducing screen resolution, wiping the registry, etc. etc.) which would normally get the game to launch previously valve's ♥♥♥♥♥♥ DRM continues to be a blight on the industry

Objectively, the best Total War entry. It improves on Rome: Total War in almost every single way. It has a few quirks that are vastly overshadowed by its perfections. The age it wears, it wears well because when this game released, the gaming industry landscape was vastly different and much healthier. Developers were still geeks and nerds that wanted to play the games they created, not bloated HR money laundering …

I guess the quality of this game can be summarised by the fact, that despite being old as ♥♥♥♥, its still one of the most played TW games completly surpassing newer titles. + Morbillion of cool mods (f.e. LOTR, GoT, enhanced vanilla etc.) + Unhinged commander traits, hilarious cutscreens and funny voicelines. Sadly there will never be a better TW game as devs are corporate cucks now. This was it.

Been playing this game since it came out, for thousands of hours. Even after going back to it after playing all the newest Total War games, this one is still the best. And no, it's not nostalgia. This game has so much flavor that the newer Total War games completely lack: * Many different nations, each with its own units and flavor, and they actually feel historical. * Animated videos for all agent actions. * …

creative assembly's only competition is themselves, and they have been losing, after this game. The best in the franchise.

Critics, per Wikipedia
Medieval II: Total War received a "Gold" sales award from the Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association (ELSPA), indicating sales of at least 200,000 copies in the United Kingdom. Medieval II: Total War received "generally favorable reviews" according to the review aggregation website Metacritic. The exclusive review was given to PC Gamer (US), which gave it an "Editor's Choice Award". IGN said that the game was not as revolutionary as its predecessor, but still introduces some new ideas and builds on others from Rome: Total War, which would still be enough for anybody to buy it. GameSpot noted the game's "epic, engrossing gameplay", but also criticised its "beefy system…

neutral · AI labelView post →right now I can pay 20 dollars for Warhammer Total War III, a game that could scarcely even be imagined in 1998. that's the equivalent of 10 dollars in 1998 prices, which is what I would try to scrounge together for a copy of PC Gamer so I could play one janky level of Myth on the demo disc

neutral · AI labelView post →Discussing games with a friend, why I keep going back to FALLOUT 4; I finally clarified that my ideal game is "THE SIMS with occasional firefights" and that's a limited marketplace. STATE OF DECAY 2, a bit. I'd take a TOTAL WAR with base management but a smaller -- oh shit it's CULT OF THE LAMB.
neutral · AI labelView post →AI slop is impacting all of our lives in different ways but the more recent way it has broken my heart is watching Creative Assembly ruin the Total War franchise with it with their rerelease of Shogun 2. I can only imagine how fucked their 40k game is going to look when it comes out.
neutral · AI labelView post →Morning, kiddo! You're awake! Huh? What do you mean? It's 2006. You fell asleep playing your favorite game. I'm really glad you don't have to get up for school today. It snowed pretty hard last night. What do you mean, "Pandemic?" Is that in your game? You really should set a timer for yourself so you don't play all night. Come down for breakfast. Your mom and I made chocolate chip pancakes.

neutral · AI labelView post →All the negative reviews are genuinely from mentally retarded dementia patients. The game is so straight forward and also a good challenge. Mfs crying bout graphics in the 2020s about a game made in 2006. Timeless classic, play it.

neutral · AI labelView post →I got this game for "free in 2026", why should I or anyone else bother with a review for this 20 years old game now? Well that's what I'm about to tell you because this isn't really a review but just telling you the state of things about this game in the mid year of 2026 because the game has got another big "life expansion support". Firstly I own the game physical DVD disc from 2006 which is the original release, but I never registered it on steam, not back then and also not during the (mid)…

If you're like me, and I know I am, you like learning stuff about the Romance of the Three Kingdoms but find its scale and massive cast of characters kinda daunting. Total War Three Kingdoms makes the setting playable!

neutral · AI labelView post →This game maybe old and this review late to come, but I suggest any 4x fan pick this game up. IT's the best Total war ever made hands down. I can't believe I've sunk over 4000 hours into this game over the last 20+ years but I think it shows it's timeless beauty and replayability, especially when extended with the KGCM mod. Get it, and you won't regret it.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I used to try and help mod Medieval Total War II and fucking EVERYTHING in that game is close-sourced and impossible to work around and yet people did it anyways. OpenMorrowind took like 20 years and that game’s assets were already accessible so excuse me if I go “lol wut no.”

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I think this is less Paradox and more Total War. Nearly everyone who's ever played a grand strategy game has played Total War.
neutral · AI labelView post →One of my all time favourites. Graphics are dated of course but frankly if you're busy zoomed in watching your infantry slog it out then you're problem missing enemy cav smashing your archers. There are so many features in this missing from newer Total Wars. Crusades/Jihad, population, unlimited build slots, sending units around without generals. It's pretty easy (unmodded at least), but unlike other game franchises it doesn't feel like Med 2 has been made irrelevant by later releases. It still…

neutral · AI labelView post →Play this with SSHIP (Stainless Steel Historical Immersion Project) Or DAC V5 (Divide and Conquer V5) for unlimited hours of fun and entertainment. With SSHIP i dont even want to play the more "modern" total wars. They aren't even comparable in quality.

neutral · AI labelView post →Despite its age (19 years old at the time of writing) this game it still excellent and I highly recommend it to all war game fans. Be warned, though. It will eat up all your spare time. I have devoted over a thousand hours to it, and I can't see me stopping any time soon. Enjoy!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The best of the Total War games. It isn't perfect, but it has a charm that later Total War and modern games can't seem to capture. There are tons of great and fleshed out mods for it too. The base game is excellent, but the fact that it still has an active modding community creating new mods even in 2026 is crazy. Instead of waiting for the inevitable disappointment of Medieval III, find a new mod for this one and give it a try.
