What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 193 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (989 of 1,279 positive).
Players praise the game's unique, psychedelic art style and music. [1][2][3] Some reviewers find the time loop mechanic frustrating, as it resets progress and abilities. [4][5][6] Many describe it as a meditative metroidvania focused on exploration and gardening rather than combat. [7][8][9]

This is a metroidvania where, as part of normal game progression, they make you play through the areas you have already beaten, after not only taking away all your earned "exp" based upgrades, but your movement and key abilities as well. This happens. Multiple times. Aside from just being obvious and shameless padding of a very short game, this is contradictory in its entirety to the notion of metroidvanias. you do …

Right, so Ultros. It looks like a metroidvania, and for about ten minutes it lets you believe it is one. You get the double jump nice and early - lovely, you think, we're off - and then it takes it away again. Yeah. Gone. And your weapon. And basically everything. Because it's a time loop, isn't it, so you keep getting flung back to square one like a toddler who's knocked over his own tower of blocks and has to …

This game rips. Really smooth movement, a visual style that pops off the screen, and just enough friction in mechanics that makes me want to keep poking at it. Ultros is one of *that* games - telling you no thing, inviting you to discover all by yourself. That's where I strongly discourage you from using any kind of guides, 'cuz discovering there is a real thing worth time spent. Srsly, the Gärdener guy'd be all you need. Now, to pros and cons: PROS Classic metroidvania experience, you know the drill The world is one big puzzle, and living things are keys for it Gameplay …

Ultros features a beautifully trippy art style, with colors that pop off the screen. It’s a slower-paced metroidvania that prioritizes exploration and puzzles, with combat largely taking a backseat. Bosses are fine they look cool but again combat isn’t great but you can take a passive route if you can work it out which I only managed on one boss. For much of my experience, I was left piecing things together in a …

79% of the 193 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Ultros. The complaint that keeps coming up: time loops resetting progress and abilities can be frustrating. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Ultros received positive reviews on Metacritic. Fellow review aggregator OpenCritic assessed that the game received strong approval, being recommended by 77% of critics. Although Rock Paper Shotgun called it "vibrant and always interesting", they said the execution falls short of its promise. GameSpot said its complexity can occasionally be frustrating but it is an "engrossing adventure set within a visually memorable world". Comparing it to the work of Ovid, Eurogamer praised how Ultros changed the focus of a Metroidvania game from exploration to transforming the world while also having excellent combat, artwork, and music. GamesRadar+ called it "unique and fresh". They enjoyed the…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →No surprise it's FF VI. Absolutely peak final fantasy. Classic Uematsu soundtrack, great story with an iconic villain and a lovable cast. Active Time Battles and a phenomenal Esper system for customization. Square at the height of their pixel art powers with some beautiful sprites. Ultros, the opera scene, train suplexing... It's a shame they kind of butchered the pixel remaster. I'd try playing a romhack version on an emulator if you're interested, preferably something based on Woolsey's…

neutral · AI labelView post →Such a waste of talent. Visual and sound talent that was employed on this game is in stark contrast to "talent" that was working on game mechanics and gameplay. Beautiful game that has one of the worst gameplay in ANY metroidvania. Game introduced deliberate way to kill enemies to get most out of the loot and then mid game promotes not killing anything because you are punished by killing enemies. In mid game even if you decide to kill enemies they don't drop anything significant. Entire mid and…

The art style is bold, surreal, and almost hallucinogenic intentionally disorienting in a way that initially feels striking, though at times it borders on being overwhelming. The art direction is easily the game’s strongest asset and does an excellent job of selling its strange, organic world. Unfortunately, that visual ambition isn’t matched by the game’s structure or gameplay flow. There are so many interesting ideas here, but instead of building…

neutral · AI labelView post →I wanted to give this game a fair shake, but I really can't recommend it with how easy it is to encounter a totally save-breaking bug. When moving through a loading area, if the player doubles back and heads the other way, it can cause you to enter a state where most of the game objects are unloaded and it becomes impossible to progress. Exiting and reloading does not fix this, restarting the current cycle does not fix this, even loading PREVIOUS cycles will not resolve the issue. The only way…

neutral · AI labelView post →As a huge metroidvania fan, this one honestly disappointed me. I went in expecting something different since Metroidvania is literally the first tag, but the whole loop mechanic just wasn't for me. The controls felt a bit wacky at times, some of the animations are a little weak, and it never really clicked with me. I did love the art style and the colorful atmosphere tho Might come back to it in the future but for now, it's a drop for me unfortunately.

Please advertise your game a roguelite, not a metrovania if you're gonna do weird stuff like that. Losing upgrades after making progress is not an acceptable mechanic for a game advertised as a metrovania IMO.

positive · AI labelView post →Ultros is a Metroidvania style game where you unlock abilities and upgrades to help with exploration and combat. You know, like pretty much every other game in this genre. The art and sound design are excellent as well. However, unlike most other Metroidvanias, Ultros takes away ALL of your abilities every time you start a new "cycle" - beating a boss. That double jump you unlocked? Gone. Those combat perks? Gone. Map upgrades? Gone. Sometimes, mixing rogue-lite elements into a Metroidvania…

With the game's structure I would even count the combat being fairly easy and repetitive as a plus, given that with the game's structure you would be fighting a lot of very difficult encounters multiple times if this *was* Silksong's combat and boss design, and moreso by the time you might want to start just running past…

There's combat, but it's not about that. This game is about "exploration". Exploration of the environments and the mechanics. Each cycle you learn more and can do more and never once was I just "stuck" trying to figure out what to do. I just kept... stumbling into a new idea or a new dimension. That is the game's crowning achievement. It unfolded in multiple…

Grounded in science fiction, ULTROS comes wrapped in both an eccentric art style from the visionary El Huervo, renowned for his work on Hotline Miami, and a mystical soundtrack composed and performed by Ratvader - Oscar Rydelius. ULTROS explores meta-themes of mental health, life, death, and karmic cycles through deep lore and environmental storytelling.
