Gorgeous presentation, shallow tactics Edit (Aug 22nd, as I hadn't seen the devs' response): The developer responded to my review by saying that I'd only experienced roughly 5% of the game. I don't think that really addresses my criticism. First impressions are extremely important, and even if the game does become more interesting later on, I don't think most players are going to spend an hour or more pushing through a mediocre tutorial just to find out whether the game eventually gets better.…

Verdict: Not Recommended At first glance, *Wardrum* presents an intriguing mashup: a turn-based tactical roguelike fused with rhythm-based combat. Wrapped in some undeniably cool 2D pixel graphics, it initially feels like a steal—especially if you pick it up on a discount. But while the premise is catchy, the execution quickly falls entirely out of sync. The Hook: Rhythm Meets Tactics If you enjoy turn-based tactics and rhythm games, the core concept will definitely catch your eye. Action…

Mixing tactical turn-based combat and a rhythm game? Looks like the people who realised fashion policing can be made into a boomer shooter are at it again! The rhythm aspect might be something people wonder about but it's implemented really well. It's snappy and precise, so if something is off-beat it's you. The button presses mirror the abilities and attacks in a satisfying way, eg. shooting an arrow is: press (get arrow from quiver), press again and hold (draw), and release (shoot). Basic…

If you like beat based games and strategy this is a really great game. It felt a bit slow at first but once you start getting a few upgrades you can really diversify your characters and their potential roles in your party. You can also really just strategy dump on this game. You can wait just outside of enemies range and let them move closer before attacking. There are LOTS of different terrain that gives you or enemies buffs, but also things like cages where you can throw them into a pile of…

NEUTRAL review!! Mainly leaving this here as a bit of a warning for turn-based tactics enjoyers without rhythm-game experience. Wardrum is a rhythm-game in a turn-based tactics skin and not the other way around. You need to like (and be good at!) the rhythm part of the game; the turn-based combat, the unit upgrades and itemisation are quite shallow on their own. Yes, you can turn down the difficulty of the timed inputs, but at that point you're just playing a rather basic turn-based roguelite…

I want more cool games from Finland. It's bursting with talented game devs who have cool unique ideas like this one. Wardrum is a game that I knew would appeal to me as I already like both rhythm games and grid-based tactics games, but the presentation really shines. Gorgeous pixel art for characters, environment and enemy designs, and most importantly powerful rhythms. The music is really excellent off rip and just gets better as you go. The start is quite slow because it has to introduce a…

Amazing idea for a game. Any game combined with QTE/rhythm inputs is a win for me. This is a turned based roguelite game , but with the twist of your attacks needing you to input keys in different rhythms (based on characters, ability and enemy spells). I'm not sure how long it is, so not sure if the price is worth it, but so far it's been fun. It has a few characters that are quite different, meta progression with permanent upgrades, build diversity on every run and a good cast of different…

Edit: so after doing 10 runs a few things standout for me. Good presentation, shallow build options. We need a more meaningful/expanded talent tree. You could say the belt system makes up for this, but I barely use it. I either missed something in the tutorial cause the gems have a sort of efficiency/power rating depending where it's slotted in the belt, no clue based on what though. Overall solid roguelike. The first two runs are pretty slow but it picks up a bit after meta upgrades and…

This is basically the isometric turn based strategy roguelike that brings in rhythm quick time events for all of your attacks and buffs. Kinda like how Expedition 33: Claire Obscure brought life back to turn based rpg, but make it musical. Pros: Great visuals, cool characters, voice acting, roguelike Cons: Not being able to use movement after using an action (just my personal preference). Menu text too pixelated to read LOL(you can change this int he menu, thank god). Overall: YES!…

Fun tactics-rhythm game whose environments look phenomenal! What surprised me positively is that your characters do the attacks as you hit the beats (instead of first executing the rhythm phase and then watching the attack afterwards), so that gives nice feedback. I also like that mechanics such as debuffs actively incorporate the rhythm side of the game instead of simply “take X damage every turn”. There’s also a cool story flavor behind the rhythm aspect of the world, and the music itself is…

Also now with the full release I get to really see the story and lore unfold as well. Fun rhythm game. Good music. I has a successful run on my 2nd attempt so I'm hoping things scale on consecutive runs. I feel like there should be more than 1 character than can use ranged (not magic) rhythm chains. Good value at $20 though!

The game can be fun but honestly , I'm not having much. It was a wrong idea to make it a rogue like instead of simply a story driven turn-based game. It's not that hard, can be changeling at times, but some characters you control have the most ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ combinations to perform their actions , its kinda funny the disparity between some that ""do kinda the same thing"", one having such simple attacks and the other are almost spam keys. Yeah the premise is cool but the execution is not ALSO big…

I love tacticals but I suck at rhythm games. So, I wasn't sure what to make of this one... I'm surprised and I have to say, it's really great (even better for me on controller for the inputs). also thanks for allowing non-pixelated font \o/ Some weirdness especially in the damage range of weapons, flow increase and decrease from perfects and misses seem a bit unfavorable, or at least it shows so.. I've only completed one run, and done a handful of runs up to that (3 or 4 I think), and I'm having a great time. I'm looking forward to playing more, trying new characters and builds. I would say this is an easy recommendation for most people. If you're a hardcore tactics player, this probably isn't going to scratch that itch. It's not super in-depth in that department, but it has enough depth to create a good amount of consideration for strategy. Positioning, interactive map tiles, ability…

Don't normally review, but this is a really nice blend of meta progression, rhythm & turn based tactics - a mix you don't usually associate together, but it's very good! Hopefully I have enough time to finish it, but so far - incredibly impressed. Doing well in the rhythm sections adds a skill based challenge that when performed well, will increase the amount of damage you do & even what kind of effect your attack will make. Each character has unique skills that they bring to the table &…

Very strong recommend. Rhythm game may cause people to wonder a little, but think of it as E33 as a baseline. The core inputs are fairly simple. The juice is that debuffs may have some secondary effects (e.g. slow reduces movement range), their main effect is to shake up your input sequence. Any complexity is steady ramped up as you progress the game. If some combination of roguelike and tactics game interests you, don't let that stop you from trying it out. They way the debuffs shake out is…

A very good mix of ryhm and tactical game on a slay the spire style roguelite formula. I enjoyed my time with it even if the game run out of steam pretty fast (basically you can get 5 runs of out it to complete everything (aka beat the last last boss with everyone). [Meh/Dropped]. Might come back to give another try, but honestly, bad first impression. Like the idea with rhythm combat, hate the grid phase of it. The biggest offender is being slow-paced, expected to have longer rhythmic "blasting" sections rather than "once in a while" short attacks. Most of the time is spent in animations, grid "management", and navigating the UI.

Very fun gem. A great mishmash of genres (tactical RPG x Rhythm games x Roguelite) that work really well together. HD-2D looks gorgeous, and despite up close pixelation there is still a ton of visible personality to everything on screen. Also worth highlighting is the great use of camera shake to really sell the impact of the attacks, and that meshes really well with the rhythm button elements: particularly the bow attacks and magic spells.
