What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 186 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (4,355 of 5,284 positive).
Players compare Wargroove to Advance Wars, with mixed feelings on its execution. [1][2][3] Many find the campaign repetitive and the turn-based gameplay slow. [4][5][6]

Style Over Substance I personally find Wargroove extremely aesthetically pleasing. I own the game on multiple platforms just because I love the design - the characters, the world, the units, the music, everything. I believe the game is generally pretty aware of that too, there's a lot of content centred around the visuals and the art direction the game took. For example you can grind to unlock extra artwork and …

I've been trying to figure out how best to describe Wargroove, and I've finally settled on "Advance Wars, but annoying." Okay, so the history - I got this game when it first came out, excited to have something to fill the Advance Wars niche that Nintendo was leaving open. Played to Chapter 2-2 in the campaign; dropped it. Since then, them memories of it weren't fond, but the why was a little hazy. I'd vaguely …

This is a bit of a mixed review. If you're looking for a score right off the bat, I'd give it like a 6/10. Buy it in a sale. Now, let me start off by saying, I am not good at tactics games. I don't pretend to be. I play them for the animations, and it's satisfying to kill enemy units. Wargroove is a bit like Advance Wars - from what I hear, never played it - in that it's armies fighting each other, rather than …

I like this game a lot but good LORD does it piss me off. To list off everything I like about the game: - The art style is neat. - I've never played Advance Wars but from what I can see this is very similar, so if you like Advance Wars this is a good pick for you. - When you get deep into a level you get really into it mentally and it's a ton of fun. - The music is good. - The story is relatively little and …

This was sitting at a "mostly positive" for years if I recall correctly but is now firmly in the "very positive". It does feel like a solid Famicom/Advance Wars style game to me. I don't really have complaints with it (though character voices are a bit too loud, had to turn that down in the options). The thing for me is, Symphony of War has really raised the bar for what I want out of the genre now. The …

neutral · AI labelView post →One of my favorite games of all time. Unfortunately, the developer Chucklefish, in their usual unprofessional fashion, silently abandoned support for this game about one year ago. This is important because the feature to upload custom content to the game's online library is broken. I am not sure if this is because Chucklefish have shut down their game's servers, or if an error/bug just appeared one day and nobody bothered to fix it - knowing the company, it could easily be either. In any case,…

I tried to get into Wargroove competitively a few years ago, can't say I was too successful but... I got the general gist of overall strategy games (ie: economy, economy, economy). I'm up for a couple of Adv. Wars 2 matches. The "S-tiers" seem to be banned in most competitive games (Sturm and Hatchi), while "A" tier seems to be banned more-often than not, but I'm cool with an A-tier…

positive · AI labelView post →Very little actual strategy, more like a puzzle game. Most of the campaign missions are just you, with very limited resources, fighting excessive unit spam (clearly the devs thought up *their* way of completing a mission and that's it). I had no interest in 'S-ranking' any of the missions, because good strategy isn't about speedrunning. Got bored about halfway through the campaign and couldn't be bothered to carry on.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Shining Force is a classic. Basically Seva's answer to Fire Emblem. Wargroove is pretty good too. Kind of like Advance Wars, but in a more medieval fantasy setting. From an indie dev with pixel art. My only real complaint is one I have with all modern "retro pixel art" style games: the "pixels" can move by much smaller increments than themselves. I wish games that used that style would align everything, including animation, to the fake pixels. It looks kind of busy and messy imo. It doesn't…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Niria Wars is a game inspired by Advance Wars, Wargroove and Chess. Units don't have HP, they can all take each other in one hit like chess - strategy comes in the way each unit moves & how it handles terrain! #screenshotsaturday #gamedev #indiedev
neutral · AI labelView post →Sadly, I cannot recommend this game, even for lovers of turn based strategy, It has quite a few issues: Horrible map designs for the campaign, they are often long drawn out slogs, and weirdly focused on pre-deployed missions Unit replenishment (healing or reinforcement) are tied to funds, you barely get any Pathing seems to be bugged, which is an issue, because some troops get bonuses based on distance travelled or terrain, it is a coinflip if they decide to follow outlined travel route or…

neutral · AI labelView post →It's not strategy. It's rote memorization of the order of operations the devs want you to do. The other negative reviews were right. The thing is, Advance Wars, which this game is clearly inspired by, also has the same issue. But at least with Advance Wars it lets you get around halfway through the game before succumbing to rote memorization "difficulty". This game starts off with that right away.

neutral · AI labelView post →Very pretty visually but the game really offers little else. Each campaign mission is really just you fighting hordes of enemies because the opposing commander always has way more resources than you, they always get the stronger units first and you just get the thing that specifically counters them and does little else, so even though the game is constantly introducing new units, every scenario ends up feeling the same. Adding up to that repetitive nature, there's only two tracks during any…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's not necessarily a bad game, but it certainly aims to be a spiritual successor to Advance Wars, which is its biggest flaw. Wargroove is way too simple to compete with such a series. Aside from commander powers, every faction's army is identical offering no variety whatsoever. The enemy AI is also underwhelming, which makes missions repetitive rather quickly. I can see people having fun with this title, because despite what I mentioned, it's clearly polished. However, there are far better…

Having a morning routine is good, but also taking a moment to stretch before physical activity helps. Whether that's working out, mowing the lawn, moving the Christmas decorations down from the attic, having sex, or whatever else. Then there is exercise. I have had a basic structure for years that I landed on in high school, and I keep changing it…
neutral · AI labelView post →Wargroove came out back when Nintendo hadn't released a new game in its Famicom Wars / Advance Wars series for nearly a decade, and was a fairly interesting new take on those games. The overall gameplay is very similar to its inspiration, with some twists and streamlining made to the Wars series gameplay. For example, the equivalent to Famicom Wars' tanks are now cavalry units, and bombers are now dragons. Each unit from the first Advance Wars game seems to have a direct counterpart in…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game's based on the Advanced Wars game series. This said game was well thought out, was decently balanced, had decent graphics for its time (GBA), and was fun. Wargroove is pretty much the same game, with a fantasy-like dress up (they ripped off 80% of the features from AW, leaving them with 20% to actually put their own touch to it. Now, an average person, taking a finished, decent work, and writing their own name as if it were theirs. You would imagine they would use this 20%…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really wanted to like it but there's like 10 tutorial missions when maybe 3 would do, and the game very heavily weights in the AI's favour
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Agreed! There are several good ones on 3DS. Advance Wars is also a great option - you can play a couple of them on 3DS with back-compatibility. Or, of the pocket can play GBA, there's those. And there are some PC games out there (although much more recent than 2005) that are in similar genres, like WarGroove or Dark Deity.
neutral · AI labelView post →⛰️ Why is this game so beautiful and plays so well, but has such a rough balance? It's simple — there is none. Always only one tactic for one map in a tactical game? Oh wow, how cool. Maybe it's "realistic", but it's not chess (or just a puzzle). Why are the limits so strict? It's a real rollercoaster, where you can easily run through several maps at S rank, because the tactics are obvious, and then get stuck on one, losing five to seven times, hours to nowhere, until you find that very linear…

When viewed by itself it can be fun though it's fundamentally flawed and I honestly think I would have enjoyed it more if I had never played Advance wars. I enjoyed the coop campaign from the dlc when my wife and I played it but struggled to like the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →On the surface it looks like Advance Wars but just with fantasy units. Yes, there is obviously a lot of passion in this game. I absolutely adore Advance Wars but this game did not not click at all with me. Missing Co Powers is one thing, but somehow Advance Wars just felt much more polished overall, the gameplay was just better. You might want to pick this up during a sale, it's not bad, but it ain't great either.

neutral · AI labelView post →a truly fine "Advance Wars" clone. very welcome to see on PC, and it really works nicely. however it's plagued by a disease like so, so many games these days: a sense of humor. or "humor". like many / most devs, these talented designers thought their writing was absolute gold, so injected their game full of it. problem is, it's not a comedy point-and-click adventure, it's a simple and straight-forward Advanced Wars tactical game. so when you want to be strategizing, first the characters…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Initially was thrilled to do this game for doing turned based tactics, I wouldn't recommend this game at full price though. It felt more like a chore not in a thinking capacity but mindless repetition if because I didn't find myself caring for the story and there wasn't really incentive to do s rank clears since it seemed the same regardless.
