What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 188 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (325 of 455 positive).
Players praise the improved story and new Conquest mode. [1][2][3] Many complain about excessive, unskippable dialogue disrupting gameplay. [4][5][6] Some feel it offers less content than the original. [7][8][9]

I keep thinking about this game and how much I want to complete it, and I'm surprised to realize how much the story actually mattered to my care of this game. Does the story need to be good? Not at all, but this? This is extremely tedious and pulled me out of the game way too much. Others have complained about constant dialogue popups and I agree, it is THAT bad, but I have a bigger issue with the entire story's …

As of writing this, Wargroove 1 has more active players on Steam than its sequel, and while I do find Wargroove 2 to be a correct game overall, I believe it completely missed the mark and utterly failed to appeal to the wider casual community. I really enjoyed playing Wargroove 1 for a good number of reasons : the concept is neat, the mechanics make for an interesting game, the single player campaign is serviceable …

tl;dr - The best part of this game is that it's more Wargroove. The worst part about this game is that it's *just* more Wargroove. First, the positive: The story is a MASSIVE improvement on Wargroove 1. Not like story is a huge selling point for these games, but this game absolutely blows the first out of the water. The story campaign is also just a lot more fun in general, as maps are more varied and give you more …

This game is great... but the constant dialogue pop ups in missions is just dragging the gameplay out. Inbetween missions and even those only walk and click missions are fine, the only problem is that every turn in a mission has be preceded by 5 dialogue popups since the characters have to drive a story forward. If it were just one line every turn i could totally see past it but the sheer amount is just annoying, no …

My recommendation for this game is not very strong. I loved the first Wargroove, but this sequel is pretty meh. It is more of the same from the first game, which would be a good thing, but it just feels like there is so much less game than the first one. The campaign is extremely disappointing, as there are hardly any missions that are the standard type of Advance Wars/Wargroove type of mission. Instead, most of the …

65% of the 188 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Wargroove 2. The complaint that keeps coming up: too much unskippable dialogue during missions. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Wargroove 2 received "generally favorable" reviews according to review aggregator Metacritic. Many reviewers found that the core gameplay was largely unchanged from Wargroove, but did not find this to be a flaw of the game. According to Touch Arcade, "that game was kind of amazing so I think that’s fine". The game contains much more content than its predecessor, with IGN describing it as "massive", and PC Gamer describing it as "a lot of game". The design of the campaigns was praised, with reviewers citing the freedom available to the player in completing missions, the variety in mission and map design, and the variety and replay value created by the objective system. neutral · AI labelView post →I will thumb this game up at some point because the gameplay is a blast and this is a best modern Advance Wars type of game. Totally worth the money, a great little game. Buuuuut I want the devs to know, that the endless dialog pop ups are such a drag it made me give a thumbs down for some time. EDIT: Oooook it is even worse. If you want to do an animated movie - do a movie. There are literally levels that are ONLY dialogs between characters. No kidding, one level was just some talk (you need…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Spent a ton of time with Wargroove and enjoyed it, but the amount of exposition that I've had to trudge through and ultimately skip seems to be more than half of the gametime. I mean, I like a campaign, but I'm not looking to read a fan-fiction novel in between rounds. This is probably a me problem, but I still had to express them.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Oh boy what a disappointment, I really wanted to love the game and the start was most promising, but over the course of either, the main campaign and the conquest mode, cracks begin to open, the deeper you dive in. It's clear that the product was rushed to release at some point. And all of that although the campaign is basically better than in the first game in my opinion, there is more mission variety and in-game dialouges during the battles, the story also has more dramatic moments. While…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A tragic game There is so much heart in Wargroove 2. Soul, even. It's clear the developers wanted to do right, by everyone. They wanted to do right by the characters. They wanted to do right by the setting. They wanted to do right by the fanbase. The storytelling on display here is, for lack of a better term, very socially-conscious. You have a very diverse cast, navigating emotionally-charged arcs and relationship dynamics. It's clear the game was written with the intent of not glorifying…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Imagine plot writers so stupid that they propose to unite two nations in blood by marrying two princes together. Just wow. Wokeness truly robs people of all sense. Shame too cause I liked the first game and this one isn't bad otherwise but the story is woke garbage.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its a hard game to review, while the gamplay its not bad, I can't stand the tedious chats, and there's waaay to many of them (at least at the start of the game). As a hardcore turn-based strategy fan I wanted to like this game but honestly if I could I would refund it. Its a pass for me, buy it at your own risk.

neutral · AI labelView post →You know after liking the original Wargroove so much I'm kinda disappointed by the difficulty and map design in this game. I liked when the previous game focused more on gameplay in stead of a story I do not care for. It feels to lighthearted for its own good. Also it is very annoying that you can't skip any of it and the characters just need to shut up sometimes. It all feels very interrupting to the gameplay. The animation did improve though so the everything is much more pleasing to the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly how can it be 2024 and developers are still putting out games that REFUSE to let you skip cut scenes and dialogue? This game is determined to make you watch a story that basically is written by hacks for the benefit of 12 year old kids.......and its still worse than you think. The first game had some bad missions and a few annoying characters but the game itself was polished. This turd has entire "missions" where all you do is walk around to get to the dialogue. No enemies...no…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I liked Wargroove 1. I'd say that Wargroove 2 is that game with more content. The new units and other new elements are interesting and add to the tactical gameplay. Then why a negative review? The two modes I was interesting in, campaign and quest just sucked. Let me explain. The campaign: There's just so much clutter that prevents me from playing the actual game! I want to play interesting tactical battles but there's just so many cutscenes, conversation and full complete maps where you do…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't really know how to put this, but in the end I found the story with the rats to be rather off-putting so I never bothered with the other campaigns from what I remember. The gameplay is alright, but nothing I couldn't get from the original already. It's a shame really, I told myself I would play this more time and time again but now I've realised I simply am not invested in it. I only really down voted it because again, you can just get the same core gameplay from the original with a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Can't recommend this one. The writing really didn't do it for me. The bouncing back and forth between silly 4th-wall-breaking humor and trying to make you feel for these traumatized characters gave me whiplash. The rat campaign in particular has some really annoying writing and I could barely make it through the Fellheim one, it was that cringy. Otherwise the game plays the same as the first one. EDIT: Decided to stick out the last bit of the game. The final level is the least fun I've ever…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Alas, more of the same from the first game. I see the Devs put some time into making Wargroove 2. the game plays nice with good art and pleasant sounds. Like my review in the Wargroove, there should have been some variety when choosing the different races on their abilities in battle. Still same concept in Wargroove 2. The campaign has much similarity to the first Wargroove. Working really hard for the stars in battle there does not seem to be any motivation to get all objectives. This…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Too many cinematics, too many interruptions, too many story quests that are puzzles with a certain way to solve them instead of a map with many strategies to apply.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's not as good as Wargroove 1. If you didn't like wargroove 1 because it did not have enough story dialog and messing around then you will like this. If you liked the big maps and long battles with more than 1 way to win and you wanted more then this ain't it. Oh well, maybe they can fix it in an expansion or something. It's a shame. Wargroove was so good.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wargroove with more words and less gameplay. I like the rat people though.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →a fun ride, but not the best sequel. it's a lot shorter than the original, and while the addition of new commanders and units is nice, there's not really anything left to do with them after you beat the game. max difficulty is about the same as Wargroove 1, which is somewhat disappointing. In short, the game feels like it should've been a DLC of the first instead of its own title: there's not a lot of meat on its bones
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wanted to like this game. But there is too much pointless conversations between the characters and way too little actual gameplay. Too often a "mission" is just there for exposition without any actual gameplay. The gameplay parts are solid, but its burried under too much bla.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The story in the first game was good, this one was not good. The story conflicted with the first game. They upped the price of warships, which was one of the only big differences. Just buy the first if you want a good strategy game with a minor story.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is one of those times I wish Steam offered a neutral recommendation. Pros: -Gameplay is practically Wargroove+. An improved map maker, new units and commanders, two-tier grooves, and a brand new game mode, Conquest. -Conquest is the roguelite addition to the series. It does what it's supposed to: give you a replayable game mode for single-player with upgrades and items and such. -I like the new rat race. Rhomb is cool and has a cool theme. -Aunty Arsonist Nadia is also neat, even if she…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It feels like the gameplay is constantly interrupted by the characters. I really liked the first game but this one feels tedious. I think with these sorts of tactics games once you get in to the main part of the fighting you should stop getting interrupted but it just does not stop. It doesn't help that the story isn't particularly interesting either. The game also starts pretty easy so it takes quite some time before the tactics actually come in to play. Can't see myself finishing this one…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wargroove 2 is a game that I really want to love as I absolutely adore the original game. This is actually the second time I've bought the game having completed the Nintendo Switch version, and I wanted to give it a second chance just in case I had judged it unfairly the first time around. However, my opinion remains largely the same. Wargroove 2 isn't a bad game and is thoroughly playable. It just has issues with its pacing, writing, and is somehow missing the soul and care to detail that…

Im here for the tactics, its a calming, chess-like pastime for me. Also, is it me or are the graphics actually worse than the first game? So ya, for those two reasons thumbs down.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Don't listen to the people saying the campaign is poorly written. It's a fun and well written story, much better than the writing in certain other games in this genre out on steam. I personally suggest using custom difficulty to set the undo's to the maximum amount allowed, so you can test things out and aren't constantly locked into a missclick or a misunderstanding of what a unit would do. Overall, worth your time if you want to play a game in this genre with a solid, fun campaign that'll…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really enjoyed the first game, but this one is a great disappointment. Simply put: This game is woke. And not in the "it has black characters" sort of way, as the store pages show. I don't mind diverse characters. However, it is woke in a different sort of way that, if I were to put in this review, it might be removed. It isn't an "in your face" like certain other games, it is subtle on it's wokeness, but it's present as early as the rat campaign. I wish I could go into more details, but I'd…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It’s Wargroove 1 but with a roguelike mode and more units. It’s good. It won’t be liked by everyone, but the balance is good now and the bugs are fixed. Worth getting on sale for sure. Square-grid tactics games are hard to make, and I commend the developers for not only making it fun, but also adding full support for custom campaigns and events. 9/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It seems the online consensus towards Wargroove 2 is much quieter and borderline negative compared to Wargroove 1. After playing both back to back, I'm honestly not sure why. Wargroove 1 longer to complete, but the main reason for this is that WG1's Arcade Mode takes 4x longer to finish with each commander than the main mode does. This is *more* content, but it is not necessarily "better" content. Wagroove 2's story mode is separated into three smaller campaigns that converge in a final…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I might play more, but finished the pirate storyline and I'm not impressed. 2 of the missions in that storyline have literally 0 combat (literally all dialogue), and all of the missions have too much yapping. Also extremely annoying to try and skip dialogue, as well at the initial tutorial. The gameplay is pretty similar to the first, but even if you start to get into it, lots of dialogue that makes you pause battling to get through, and the dialogue is NOT well written, campy at best. At…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The campaign did indeed felt like an add on rather than being worth a new series. another problem is with the music while playing, you're going to hear the same music for the whole mission since it doesn't change between commanders anymore. The story/lore felt like you play the beginning and end, literally no middle part, and felt way shorter than the first series. The game also felt harder at the beginning and way too easy at the end. It felt like they put effort in the first quarter of the…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've played almost 90 hours of Wargroove and was really excited after completing it to play Wargroove 2 and I'll be honest i'm kinda disappointed, I've played similar games to Wargroove (i.e Battle for Wesnoth, etc.) and what makes these games fun and compelling is that the you learn the story both alongside your characters and thru the missions and that aspect is sadly lacking in this game so far. Unlike Wargroove where u had a very fleshed out story and missions with proper challenges to…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've only played multiplayer with friends and so far we've been getting so many bugs. Many prevented us from rejoining games. The game would be long, too, before it decides to prevent us from rejoining. A notorious bug places our units on the same square and makes it impossible to target unless whoever's unit that was on the square first is moved. As of right now, I don't recommend. Items still break online multiplayer games as of 06/16/2026. A work around I found was to not play any downloaded…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty sad. Over a year old now and they still havent fixed soft locks that the devs know exist. One mission where if ceasar the dog falls into the earth, the mission will literally go on forever rather than registering him as dead and theres no getting past it other than starting the entire mission over and hoping the dog doesnt move to a tile thats about to drop. Story is pretty woke anyways which ruins a lot of the game. First game was better. Wouldnt bother with this one personally. Ive…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →-This is more like an expansion than a brand new game. -All the regions are still the same, nobody has any strength/weaknesses, they all have the exactly same units but look different. -All the heroes are the same melee super minion except for their abilities. -People still just spam pikeman in PvP. -The story is so bad I just can't feel anything for those rat people and "pirates". -Literally copypasting some mechanics from Into the Breach.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sure, Wargroove 1 has more singleplayer content and have better music, but I personally enjoy Wargroove 2 better, even the music, the story is really good under the surface and leaves a quite bit open for personal interpretation, that aside, Wargroove 2's story is the pain and coping with loss and it's told in a way I never seen before, or at least the more memorable story on lossing your home, friends or even family. But there's the glaring issue, that the text boxes cannot be skipped and it…

I haven’t played the first one yet, but I might grab it when it’s on sale. neutral · AI labelView post →TLDR: Kinda crappy, lacking content, unworthy sequel. It feels like Advanced Wars, but minus the content. I feel like for the price you just don't get a lot. The secondary objectives in this game are cryptically worded. It's super frustrating trying to figure out how to get stars in the map. This game pretty much puts the nail in coffin for me for the publisher Chucklefish. They're almost EA level bad. If you're itching for a fun retro strategy game, go for Symphony of War.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Well, it's sad. I had fond memories of Wargroove from before but they went woke. No real exciting mechanics, no real exciting developments, just... injecting politics into video games. For those who might wonder what I'm talking about, there's a number of scenes that really just exist to talk about irrelevant (to the overall plot) topics that really don't move the needle. Contrasting this series to many of the great anti-war books leaves so much to be desired that it really seems like the…
