What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 242 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (3,168 of 3,806 positive).
Players praise the game's beautiful visuals, relaxing atmosphere, and unique flying island concept. [1][2][3] Some reviewers note performance issues, especially on higher-end hardware, and find the gameplay repetitive or grindy. [4][5][6] A few players criticize recent updates for removing player agency and causing save file problems. [7][8]

This might not be an issue for most people but for me it kinda spoiled the game. The Islands are tiny. I know, you can't exactly expect to turn an entire continent into a flying ship, but that doesn't mean EVERY island needs to be pilotable. As it stands, there is no island that would take more than ten secodns to run across. Less- MUCH less - to fly ('glide'). There isn't any real sense of exploration, I feel. you …

I think it's really fun! My only criticism isn't about the gameplay. It's a pet peeve of mine that games and stories about restoring the land focus on killing mushroom creatures and introducing greenery. Mushrooms are so important to the ecosystem, and there are ecosystems that exist in dry/sandy/rocky locations. I know it's a dumb thing to care about, but I wanna say it anyway. :)

Honest Review Pros: -Great game, very relaxing and has a bit of a grind to it. -A lot of ways to build your own place (unique pieces of walls, floors, roofs, etc.) -Interesting concept of moving around with your island -Puzzles are super fun to figure out Cons: (This is subject to change) -Performance is not in a great state at the moment. There is some areas that will give me 20 fps at Medium settings with a good …

This is a game about survival—but the kind of survival you experience on a sunny morning with a cup of hot chocolate in hand, as you try to enjoy the sun’s rays gently brushing your face while wearing pajama bottoms and a fluffy robe. If that’s what you’re looking for, then it’s a plus: a warm little game about being caring. I recommend it for those seeking thrills and adrenaline in a new take on a book about …

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Gave it a good 10 or so hours after the major updated that dropped today and... if that's the direction for the game then some people will probably like it, but I just find it tedious. The progression and unlocks are just too few and far between, barely felt like I had gotten anywhere. It's probably one of those "better with friends" games, but I'm already bored with it playing it alone for a day, I'd rather play a game with friends that I enjoy.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game concept is pretty great and has a lot of potential. I don't recommend it right now due to performance problems. My machine can run cyberpunk 2077 reasonably well, by Aloft even on low settings has a lot of stuttering and low fps. Would definitely recommend once performance is improved.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I used to love this game. Played through to the teapot four times! I loved being an ecosystem engineer with my mobile clinic of plants, animals and insects to rescue degraded islands. And most of all, loved the AGENCY I had as a player. Sure, I had to hit up the special unlock islands but other than that I could visit the rest of the game world in any order. The Bloom & Blight update nerfed a lot of player agency. The base side of things (building, crafting, farming) is still good when…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →4 hours in I realized I was just doing the same thing over and over again but it was getting more grindy. After 4 hours I would hope to see something different. Even the enemies I was fighting was the same, and there was only 1...It felt like doing anything was kind of pointless and unnecessary like I could save time by just not doing anything except what was only absolutely necessary. Not fun. Also the game does a terrible job explaining how some of the game mechanics work. I dont want to need…

neutral · AI labelView post →This was a decent game, but the recent update destroyed everything. Not only did they outright delete everyone's save files. Not just make you start a new game to see new content, they just deleted your files. On top of that, the game has massive errors now. To the extent the ship you spent 8 hours crafting by hand just gets deleted. tens of thousands of NON RENEWABLE RESOURCES get deleted forever without warning or input. The update was interesting, but this is unplayable and so unacceptable…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It is honestly such a shame. The vibe and visuals of this game are amazing. The building is great. But the performance is atrocious, it is awful. It is hard to describe just how optimized it is. The devs would make a huge mistake if they focus on *anything* but improving the performance. Any new feature or addition can wait.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Seriously, how in the ♥♥♥♥ can this game be so cpu bound that ultra to low settings does functionally nothing to fps, what are you guys running in the development studio that gets above 70 fps? running a sever takes a flat 20-30 fps off your game, and i regularly in heavy areas go to 20-30 fps at low. This game is NOT worth playing unless you're already used to playing at 30-60 fps in most games. it also seems to have horrendous garbage collection passes that cause the game to stutter every…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a painfully slow experience with endless railroading and time gating, with nothing interesting to do on most of the islands. There is no freedom to be found in this game, and hardly any variety of content. The best thing you can do is build a nice house and decorate with animals and such, but plenty of games have that with better gameplay features. This is bad even for early access, and should not have been released in this state. The gameplay loop consists of the following:…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I would not currently recommend this game at full price, but it could be worth it on sale. If you enjoy being rewarded for exploration and delving into a game, this isn't the game for you. If you want to build a pretty base and not do much else, this game will work, but you could probably do that elsewhere. PROS: + aesthetics: some of the animations are awkward, but I do like the aesthetic choices in the game. it's very pretty and cohesive. animal friends are cute. building bases can be…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Aloft is an idea with a lot of potential. Unfortunately, the game falls into mediocrity in every category (visuals, combat, audio, etc.) except the building. The building falls into the complete mess category. It feels like every 5 items were created by a separate person with no shared motive, intent, or requirements. Many building blocks don't align, such as half-walls when placed over full-walls, or when mixing stone and wood blocks, etc. Spiral stairs cannot be encased in a small circle…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm interested to see where this goes, but as it stands right now, I found the loop and mechanics rather boring. Even through a "cozy" game lens, I found it fairly boring. Not to mention there feels like there's a good amount of annoying backtracking, lack of QoL features, and overall lack of diversity in the gameplay loop. No for now, but maybe with a couple of updates it could be somewhere.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game might be the most unoptimised game I have ever played, I can run unreal engine 5 games in 2K resolution on high settings with no problem yet this game runs on 50-70 FPS and drops to 20-30 FPS on full HD resolution if I build anything. Don't get me wrong the game is fun, there are loads of things to do , exploration is fun but it runs as if I'm playing on a PC from 2010 and it's such a shame because when I'm able to play I really enjoy it. Hopefully the performance issues will be…

Aloft is about gliding around sky islands, discovering new places, and restoring corrupted islands. This game—I created a one of a kind critical bug.
positive · AI labelView post →I’ve been waiting for a game to come out (Aloft) for about six months and I just saw early access released TODAY! You can bet I’m watching it download right now 😍
positive · AI labelView post →The game is cute, pretty chill and all. For the start I didn't see any "survival" aspect, only crafting and running around. I'd give it a shot if the performance wasn't so bad or Steam had a longer time limit for refunds. Seriously, I can run Crimson Desert on high settings with more FPS than that. The performance is soooooo bad.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you’re looking for a game to disconnect this weekend, try out Aloft! Good blend of survival, adventure, and base building on floating islands. Has co-op. Killer orchestral ost too. It’s nice, can sink a few dozen hours in easily
positive · AI labelView post →Slight change of plans today. Sue and I are gonna check out the early access release of Aloft ☁️ Stream is live, tea is brewing. Cya soon! ----> twitch.tv/stephenjoys
neutral · AI labelView post →I played the demo a while ago and really liked it. There felt like progression and I kept finding new bits to unlock or loot to add to my base. With the most recent update, the progression feels awful and I can't build anything. I can't find new knowledge stones to unlock more, and the world feels repetitive. This might be exactly what someone is looking for so if you can get it on sale, go for it. I think the devs care about the game and it will get fixed. I think the performance also…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is like Skyrim, Just Cause, Minecraft, Starfield and any casual city sim building game had a child... yes this is for the filthy casual player typically.... with crafting, progression barriers, and tech advancements. Your island can be your home, your refuge, your stockpile, your "horse" from Oblivion, or your advanced scout ship to explore the whole map...flying is like Just Cause, without the grappling hook. You have puzzles, challenges on the ground and air, and some trivial, medium,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game starts in a very relaxing atmosphere, progress flows nicely, you are building your base etc. Then you get into the 2nd biome where you are hit with much more complex puzzles, in fact many of them all crammed into a single island with little to no direction on how you complete some of these. There is clutter everywhere, and research falls behind early on making you back track to get stuff once you unlock the items needed. Back tracking in this game is not fun, it takes a long long long time…

neutral · AI labelView post →Beautiful, cosy survival game with easy combat mechanics and endless potential. I originally started playing before the Blooms and Blight update. I loved the visuals and design but found play style repetitive, lacking progression (unlocking things that required items you haven't seen, or even heard of yet was frustrating) and at times some lag or bugs. BUT NOW... The new island restoration is visually breathtaking, no more trying to find an insect that isn't already on it. Progression is a…

positive · AI labelView post →Yanno what? Here. Aloft comes out in a week and is a survival/crafting game where you comandeer a floating island, attach sails and fins to it, and make it a natural airship to go have adventures in. store.steampowered.com/app/1660080/...
neutral · AI labelView post →I love this cozy game. While the complaints ARE true, there is not that many things to do, each of those things is extremely lovely. Don't expect some grand immersive experience. This isn't Breath of the Wild. This is a small, focused experience. Flying around feels great. Building your island up feels great. Exploring other people's islands from the workshop feels great. But that's it, don't expect anything more and you'll be happy. So long as each update adds something that feels great, I…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →EDIT: Realized I never talked about the gameplay. It's still good! It's just bad performance keeps me from enjoying it and takes me out of the experience. Let's hope the performance update (which is the next early access update as far as I know) fixes these issues. I've been following this game for a long time and just decided to pick it up again on a whim. Performance has always been an issue with this game: - models aren't loaded in at game start, and the loading is not asynchronous so the…

neutral · AI labelView post →Steam needs to add a "Meh" recommendation option for games like this. The game is what it tries to be, but that's all it is...a basic run of the mill exploration game with no rime or reason to it other then to "be" those genre tags. The TLDR, if you are looking for something interesting to play, this isn't it. You build to build, you farm to farm, and you explore to achieve those 2 goals. That is it (from what I have seen). To start with, the game doesn't really explain much of anything. Why…

However, once you get to a certain point, it pretty much is the same as any other type of explore and build game. Do I hate it, no - but it just doesn't keep my interest going as long as I would have hoped. If you get it on sale - it is worth it. Note, that I hope the game progression is much more entertaining in future updates. I will review the game again once it has more progress in…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game had a fun run.. not sure what happened with the last update. Game stutters on a 5080, to the point it's not very enjoyable to play. The controls feel jerky now too. I had a great bit of fun with the game in earlier updates but the recent one has broken the game.

This game has become one of my sister's and my absolute favorites for spending time together because it's so fun and delightful! I feel like this game lends itself well to multiplayer without requiring it in a way that makes everything feel low stakes enough that it's perfect after a long day at work.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If on windows or linux, the performance just kills the joy. That should be the only focus atm for the devs. The game is just amazing otherwise. Beautifully designed, a lot to explore, crafting, a bit of survival. At this stage, can't recommend the game yet.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Excellent chill exploration/crafting game. All of the negative reviews whining about losing their save: 1) the devs provided an avenue to keep playing the previous version with the old save, 2) it's early access. sometimes fixing issues and making things better means old saves won't work anymore. That's an understood part of EA
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am running this on an AMD Ryzen 9 7900X, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 TI, and 64GB of RAM at 6000 MHz. The game looks great, the art is appealing, but nothing distinct. I was looking forward to playing this. For the time being, it is not playable for me. On the lowest settings, limiting FPS to 90, the game is met with constant stuttering with minimal hardware usage shown on Task Manager. Increasing the graphic settings, it looks marginally better but is met with identical unchanging stuttering.…
