What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 187 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (2,413 of 2,556 positive).
Players praise the game's writing, voice acting, and noir atmosphere. [1][2][3] Some reviewers note the gameplay can be linear or unclear at times. [1][4][5] A few players found the premise off-putting or the writing boring. [6][7]

Chicken Police intrigued me from the start due to its interesting premise: a noir detective story where all characters are animals. On paper a rather stupid idea, but as I watched the trailer and then played the game, I discovered a top notch voice acting and a gritty crime story, supported by a slick black and white presentation and a very good soundtrack. Unfortunately after the first 2-3 hours I also understood …

Really solid detective game. All the voice actor and dialogue is great. Even though they are all animals, the characters come off as much more human than in most other games. Much better than the vast majority of games on Steam. There are times where it is not clear how to move onto the next area. But generally if you can't leave somewhere or progress you need to exhaust a dialogue option somewhere.

the kind of game that sounds like a joke until you actually play it and realise it’s probably one of the better written noir games in years. The atmosphere is basically sin city meets zootopia where you can almost smell the cigarette smoke and whiskey breath through the screen. Luckily this isn’t a furry game, along the same kinda style to bojack horseman.

I must admit I didn't much enjoy the first hour - It felt like they walked into every noir trope I'd ever seen. But I played the rest of it on stream, and absolutely loved it. Didn't appreciate how many times I had to look at a specific upsetting scene, but I appreciated the characters, the story, Madame Zaiwass and the wonderful and complete voice acting. I'd recommend this. Stream found it interesting, too. Best …

No, it's not a joke. Yes, the concept is ridiculous - and the game is well-aware of this, and revels in it. "Why chicken-headed policemen in a Noir setting?" "Why not?" As a result, it has a little bit of everything. There's Zootopia/Beastars style social commentary with species being stand-ins for social groups, there are honest-to-Cthulhu Noir tropes being played completely straight (well, mostly), there are some …
Summarised from 34 of the 255 public posts collected about this game; every point cites the posts behind it ([n] opens the post) and the split is counted from the posts’ own ratings. Updated Oct 12, 2026. How summaries are made
90% of the 187 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Chicken Police - Paint it RED!. The complaint that keeps coming up: gameplay can be linear and guided. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Laura Cress of Adventure Gamers praised the game's voice acting, graphics, and story, though she said it has "too many unnecessary mini-games". Hardcore Gamer's reviewer, Chris Shive, similarly criticized the minigames while praising the noir atmosphere. Writing for Nintendo Life, Stuart Gipp called it "a polished, captivating experience" and said it was one of the best adventure games on the Switch. Luke Kemp of PC Gamer called it "one of the most surreal experiences of my life" and praised the writing and acting. Caitlin Argyros wrote in her review for RPGfan that the mystery has an "abrupt and not quite satisfying" conclusion, but she enjoyed the writing nonetheless. Christopher Byrd…

positive · AI labelView post →An incredible story with excellent writing, polished voice acting, and amazing characters. The world-building in this game is actually insane, and I loved diving into every detail. I think there’s enough content here for a solid 10 hours of noir crime-solving fun with Marty and Sonny. I can’t wait to play the sequel! I highly recommend this to fans of games like Ace Attorney, Kathy Rain, Tangle Tower, or Norco! A perfect narrative and a surprising twist to wrap up 2024

neutral · AI labelView post →I bought this on sale because "haha chicken police :) funi :)" but it's actually really good. Clever writing, fully voiced (and voiced well!), and absolutely nails the detective noir atmosphere. I've only played for 3 hours and haven't completed the first chapter, but feel like recommending it already. Also, GREAT jazz soundtrack.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game opens with a quote from The Big Sleep, moves into some weird ♥♥♥♥ about how different races are fundamentally incompatible, and then the first line proper of the story is, “My office lock is a piece of ♥♥♥♥ if a dame can pick it.” At that stage I thought, jesus christ not another one, but I felt like I had to push through for science. There’s something kind of viscerally horrifying to me about stock photos of women in lingerie with photorealistic animal heads. There’s something that…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I came into this game just thinking that it had a cool artstyle after playing the demo. I was blown away. What an adventure this was. It nailed what it wanted to do, and that is to be an interactive detective noire movie. The writing, voice acting and pacing is perfect. What an amazing way to use the visual novel genre to build something unique. Best game to play close to New Year's Eve.

neutral · AI labelView post →This game surprisingly exceeded my expectations, a cool detective game with a pretty deep, dark narrative and some noir aesthetic, full of humor and more animal puns that I can count. Also I loved the art style here, animal heads with human bodies sounds weird in paper but it works pretty well here. And also, the voice acting is top notch, with some jazzy soundtrack that only enhances the immersion.

neutral · AI labelView post →So I looked at this game and thought “wait, what’s going on here?”. I expected it to be a satire of the genre (chickens, you know)… boy, was I wrong. The art style and music are both fantastic, which help to build a detective-like atmosphere all throughout the game. The story is pretty engaging, with a wide variety of characters you can interact with, albeit a little too stereotypical. Plus, the game does a great job of immersing you in the whole plot, and I never felt like a simple…

neutral · AI labelView post →The game is one hell of a ride, the story is well written, and the ending was very satisfying. The character feel very fleshed out and the world does feel lived in. If you are into the detective stories this is a must pick up, the game captures a lot of elements of old detective movies which I grew up watching, so it did feel a bit like a nostalgia trip for me. This is just a great introduction into the franchise, if you ever wanted to dig deep into a world, this one feels like a good start.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →PROS: Great UI and art with suitable music and competent voice acting. Authentically captures film noir aesthetics. CONS: Very few interactive elements, mostly just clicking through dialogue trees. No rewards or consequences for exploration or thoroughness. Main gameplay is subjective guess work.

neutral · AI labelView post →A pretty fun detective game, I like how many characters there are, and that each character has depth to them, and it's fully voiced. The story was really good and engaging.(I accidentally left it open so it's closer to 7-8 hours playtime)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A remarkably creative backdrop for a hardboiled noire VN. Fully voice acted with excellent voice performances and art design, and delivers a layered story with a surprising amount of lore to tease out. The brisk pacing makes it easy to complete in 2-3 sittings, with puzzles that are simple enough that they won't stop your momentum and a fair few missable collectables to hunt along the way.

The art style intrigued me but I'm not a fan of detective games or visual novel style narrative, Surprisingly this visual novel style detective game became my weekend obsession. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Completely hooked me. The detective noir vibe is spot on and the writing is sharp and funny. I loved the banter between Sonny and Marty and how the game balances absurd animal characters with a genuinely gritty story. The art style is stunning and the voice acting really brings the world to life. It feels like playing through a weird, stylish crime novel and I was invested from start to finish.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a basic click and point adventure. What makes it stand out is it great voicing and writing. Story is ok, but the World they create with all the animal people trying to live together is even better. My play time start to finish was 13 hours. I Found the game fun, but aggravating at times. puzzles were not to hard as long as you noted the clues. It is linear without any real choices that will change the story, at least none that I found in my one playthrough.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm disappointed. The setting of the story is excellent: that of a typical hard-boiled novel. The carachters' personalities makes you feel involved and the animals chosen to represent them are ridicolously on point. The problem is that in Chicken Police there's nothing to actually play. You click where you have to, go to places you're told to, ask questions you know you must make. No choice, no investigation. Even the deduction board moments in the game require no deduction; they're just recaps…
