Dead Cells
Developer Motion Twin
Dead Cells is a 2018 roguelike-Metroidvania game developed by French independent developer Motion Twin. The player takes the role of an amorphous creature called the Prisoner. As the Prisoner, the player must fight their way out of a diseased island in order to slay the island's King. The player gains weapons, treasure and other tools through exploration of the procedurally generated levels. From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

Players widely praise Dead Cells for its fluid combat, smooth movement, and addictive gameplay loop. [1][2][3][4] Many reviewers highlight the game's excellent variety in weapons, builds, and level design that keeps runs fresh. [1][3][5][6] Some players note the game is very challenging but rewarding, with a fair difficulty that encourages repeated attempts. [1][2][7][8]

I'm super conflicted. Starting with the positives- At its surface it is a pretty fun game. The combat is quite fluid and generally fast paced - you can slow it down somewhat sitting back with ranged weapons, although not usually against a boss. Great soundtrack as well. Now that I've got 20ish hours in though, I've really just getting annoyed by its flaws. Number one realization is just that the grind is the content …

Very punishing but equally rewarding and enjoyable roguelike which does an excellent job at staying interesting throughout every run. DLC's aren't needed to enjoy the game, but they add lots of new and unique content while staying cheap. The combat is perfect with incredibly smooth gameplay, movement and tons of variety in weapons, items, builds. The music is amazing as well. Overall great game a must buy for any …

Dead Cells taught me an important lesson: no matter how many fancy weapons I find, I will absolutely still roll directly into danger like a caffeinated tumbleweed. The game is basically: - Die. - Come back. - Pretend you learned something. - Die again but with style. Combat feels amazing, exploration is addictive, and the soundtrack makes me feel like I should be parkouring off my own walls. If you’ve ever wanted to …

Honestly, calling Dead Cells one of the best roguelite games of all time is not an exaggeration. I never thought roguelike and metroidvania could be blended together this smoothly in a single game. The 2D animation is insanely fluid. I heard the game was originally developed in 3D before being reworked into 2D, which might explain why the movement feels so natural and responsive. The optimization is also amazing. …

Dead Cells is just straight-up fun. The combat feels smooth and fast, and experimenting with different weapons never gets old. It’s challenging, but in a way that makes you want to try again instead of rage quit. There’s a ton of variety, so runs don’t feel the same every time. Super easy to lose hours to this one.

Players who liked Dead Cells talk about combat is fluid, fast-paced, and satisfying; those who didn't talk about some players find the grind repetitive after many hours. Which matters more to you?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Dead Cells received positive reviews from critics. The Xbox One version received "universal acclaim", and the PlayStation 4, PC, Nintendo Switch, and iOS versions received "generally favorable" reviews according to review aggregator website Metacritic. Brandin Tyrrel of IGN praised the game for its engaging gameplay premise, and randomized layout, declaring "The placement and order of its levels are Dead Cells' skeletal frame, but the ever-changing layouts and enemy and item placements are the blood that pumps through its heart." The action and combat of Dead Cells received acclaim as "distinct", "fluid", and "agile". Reviewers compared the game to the Dark Souls, Diablo, and Castlevania…

Pretending like the only way to do anything as an indie is to use AI is extremely harmful.

I imagine this could be a great simple way to get an art style similar to Dead Cells going! Or an isometric game in the style of early RTS games! Even exports normals for 2D lights! #gamedev #indiedev

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm not sure if Dead Cells is for me personally so I don't know how much more I will play, but the developer should be applauded for the Assist Mode the game provides. It allows the end-user to decide how much hand holding they'd like, whilst not disabling achievements or penalising the player in any way. That's true accessibility; something which should be more accepted and implemented in games. Not everyone is a gaming god, not everyone has time to grind, not everyone wants such a challenge.…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For those who are unaware: There were going to be more updates to the game after "The End is Near" (confirmed by Evil Empire, who were the people actually developing the game since Rise of the Giants), but Motion Twin abruptly cancelled all updates past it- presumably to shift focus to their upcoming game Windblown. The "End is Near" update was not actually finished- it was in beta when all updates were cancelled, and the version of it that was pushed to the main game is basically just what…

neutral · AI labelView post →This game is great. It's a sort of 2d side scroller with fast paced combat that has a lot of variety and re-playability. You start off somewhat weak and through every attempt to progress through the maps and every death you slowly gain power to go further the next time.. and the next... and the next after that. Death becomes part of the game. You keep earning currency to unlock permanent upgrades, then try again. You can start with random weapons, or use the options to control what…

neutral · AI labelView post →Both the Steam Indie and the Itch.io games are valid ways! Also, procedural generation does NOT have to be bland. Dead Cells - my preferred Metroidvania (will stay that way probably until the day i die), and Hades I/II are the best examples how random generation can generate completely acceptable and enjoyable gameplay experiences. Give the generator enough pieces to work with and make sure they fit together regardless of how you mix&match them, and you got a pretty good thing going. Add tight…

positive · AI labelView post →oh no... ... I have access to a pristine Steam copy of Dead Cells with all DLCs... ... a game I have hundreds of hours on the Switch and know I will get reobsessed with.... help
positive · AI labelView post →This is one of those games where the DLC are integrated ingame; you fight through a gauntlet of enemies to reach a door and a message appears that say "if you want to go here you must buy X"... So if you want a "full" game you have to buy all DLC and that's practically the same cost as the base game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dead Cells is what happens when movement itself becomes the main weapon. You don’t just play this game, you flow through it. Running, rolling, slashing, dodging, chaining attacks together until your character feels less like a person and more like momentum given physical form. At first, it’s brutal. You die quickly, often, and usually in ways that feel suspiciously personal. But each run teaches you something: a better route, a sharper reaction, a new weapon that suddenly changes everything.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you like Ori or Hollow Knight, and you also love roguelikes then this is the game for you. The progression is really consistent so dying doesn’t feel too frustrating. You’re always learning new biomes, enemies, and bosses. Over time you unlock new weapons, movement abilities, and upgrades. This is a great Steam Deck game.

positive · AI labelView post →That game is obviously an absolute banger. I mean the reviews speak for themselves. I am not leaving this review to compliment how great it feels to play, or it's awesome soundtrack, I am posting this to point out that the minimal requirements are not very accurate, I am running this game on a potato pc at a solid 60 fps, I really don't see why the requirements say " Intel i5+"

positive · AI labelView post →This is a game I picked up on sale about a year ago. Booted it up, played for about an hour, realized how hard it was, and set it down and didn't look back. Fast forward until recently, since I got a steam deck, I've been tacking my backlog of games. Trying to force myself to finish more games than I buy. Dead Cells was next on my list and boy am I sure glad I gave this title a second chance! I don't know if the steam deck made me enjoy this game more but man is it a blast sitting on…

positive · AI labelView post →God damn, I think I'm getting addicted to Dead Cells. This game is fun as hell.
positive · AI labelView post →The more you play the game, the more fluid everything feels... not in a gameplay way - but in a brain way. At first its clunky, but then suddenly you hit this moment where everything just flows right and all your weapons are perfect and life is going amazing- and then you never get that build again... and you spend the rest of your life chasing that rush... waiting for a sliver of dopamine to be granted to your shaky little hands. 10/10 would cell again.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have been sick of all the roguelites that lack feasible build variety. No matter what they offer, only one path really works. So I came back to this, and this is how you do it. I actually feel like I'm not playing the exact same game loop over and over, only searching for specific mechanics while shedding everything else. A different combination of weapons and upgrades can work as well as another! Rare in this day in age when everything is either "souls like" or a roguelite, that the game…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Love the variety of weapons, skills, enemies... everything! The platforming and combat feel are top tier. Dead Cells and Dark Souls are very similar in that each weapon feels different and your death is usually your fault, not caused by some bad game design. It's a shame that Dead Cells doesn't have any more updates coming though as it could have lived on for many more years.

neutral · AI labelView post →Seems pretty good, but I might need a few more runs to decide. Jokes aside, this is one of the only games ever that has properly incentivized playing at the highest difficulty level. Regardless of the frustration, the variety of weapons and paths to explore always kept things fresh. It truly exemplifies what I love about roguelike games, and action RPGs as well.

neutral · AI labelView post →I just don't understand Dead Cell's popularity. I greatly enjoy action roguelites, but I just don't find this game fun. I don't find any of it fun. For one thing, it is very simple. I'm accustomed to a degree of complexity that seems to be non-existent in this game. There is very little composition in terms of either character building or enemy structure. Also, at times it *almost* feels like a Metroidvania, but that notion is too thin in Dead Cells. Instead of having the strengths…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a roguelike game where skills mainly matters. Sure, there's RNG elements but there's controlled elements as well that help you "shape" your runs. For better or worse. And I personally would always choose skill over arbitrary RNG in roguelikes. It's enjoyable, fluid and very challenging. Highly recommended for those seeking to conquer such games.
