What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 263 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (2,105 of 2,441 positive).
Some reviewers note the high difficulty and punishing learning curve. [1][2][3] A few players criticize the temporary nature of creatures and run structure. [4][5][6]

Interesting concept, but... I'm a collector. I don't like perishable things. I like collecting. Your deck is perishable. Your cards either die or you toss them because they lose value. Creatures you "tame" are only temporary companions until they die or your run ends, which returns them to the nothingness. I feel a sense of loss rather than a sense of completion. *Sadface*

Before you play there is a mental switch you need to make. In this game you do not collect a team of cute pets to face the world. In this game you gather disposable minions you throw at problems often intentionally sacrificing them for a chance at a stronger new minion. The second you stop thinking about your cute little pets as your companion and see them as the disposable slaves they are the game stops being …

You KNOW its a GREAT game when you beat the "true final boss" after many tries and instinctively say to yourself that you HAVE to review this game. its not just a good game, its a great game. the replayability is basically infinite. many different modes, many bosses, secret bosses, tons of different builds, a randomness that does not feel RNG (it feels really well balanced), yes ofcourse, very occasionally there …

Must play for every roguelike deckbuilder or monster-taming fan out there. -This game is absolutely amazing it really takes the genre to another level. The synergies done with the syringes, the evolutions, the taming, and the variety of creatures are all super well done all of this makes it easily a GOTY contender. -Other aspects are very enjoyable ; The mysterious atmosphere, the abyss, and the story told through …

At first I was discouraged a bit by the negative reviews saying that it is unfair or imbalanced, while my playtime may not reflect the full spectrum of the game, I find the game challenging, fun, and not nearly as cruel as people make it out to be. I admit the game is much harder than other deckbuilding games out there ("easy mode" definitely tougher if compared to other deckbuilders I played) and it leads you to …

Endless mode NEEDS the option to have effects explanation TOGGLED OFF, i'm currently in Normal Difficulty waves 37 and each battle is taking 15 mins just from effects being explained alone ! Also some of us, myself included run the game on older PCs so please consider also the option to DISABLE cards shining effects on card when injected with MANY syringes, it takes way too much GPU power and would be nice to not have…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Before buying this game I read some of the reviews, and noticed a common complaint was the difficulty, and lack of viable synergies that make winning runs possible, which almost dissuaded me from buying it. I am so glad I bought it anyway because this game hit all the marks for me. The creature art is incredible, the music and sound design is immersive, and as an avid Slay the Spire, XCOM 2, and Inscryption enjoyer, Decktamer's gameplay really touched on a lot of my favorite components of these…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My recommendation for Decktamer comes with a big asterisk because while its core is incredible, it has some glaring flaws that others have pointed out. Everything that's positive about the game is readily obvious and I won't talk about it as much; it's the negatives that only come up a bit later and are more worth discussing. While this hasn't stopped me from enjoying it enough to keep playing, I suffer through some of these issues while knowing that they're issues. So: Pros: -Amazing art and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm very mixed on this game. The art and sound design are fantastic and the combat is fairly fun too. Challenging but rewarding at the same time, each round of combat feels like a puzzle that you try to solve for the best outcome. That being said the structure of the runs is what irks me to the point that I don't feel like I want to play the game, hence the negative review. Runs are structured like so: you choose from 2 different combat encounter + reward packages, play the combat then…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It went from a very fun demo, to an alright game, to being frustrated about trying to keep my monsters alive (on easy), to me realizing that less than 41% of the people who got this game beat the 'medium' difficulty as of writing this review. I completely understand harder difficulties being challenging, but when less than half your player base has beaten anything past the easiest difficulty, you might have it tuned a little hard. There are 4 levels of difficulty, it shouldn't require that you…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Edit: While I am not going to change my recommendation just yet, I do want to update saying the community involvement the Devs have, their published road map, and multiple assurances at attempting to address issues like difficulty and run structure is very promising and gives me hope. I am going to let them roll these out before I adjust. But felt this was worth highlighting as a very strong positive. I was going to leave it as a recommended because I do like this game a lot, but I think this…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good game, but not for casual players. Not saying its a bad game by any means, just saying I don't recommend it for others. By all means this game is very impressive, but the majority of players will not get mileage out of this game. The game is very original in its premise and I enjoy the novelty and difficult style of gameplay in macro and especially micro decisions making combat encounters have a surprising amount of depth and strategy for a roguelike deckbuilder, which I enjoy. The problem…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I just completed my first run and I'm seriously considering refunding. The gameplay loop doesn't bother me, by all rights I should like it I guess. The thing I struggle to get behind is that every creature you have in your deck becomes obsolete. Even with the syringe mechanic, you're gonna scrap everything eventually. Nothing builds on itself like slay the spire or other deckbuilding roguelikes. you just have cards, they get old and you either sacrifice them or evolve them and get new cards.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Like that Junji Ito hole, this game was made for me. It's a creepy and surreal creature tamer/decjbuilder with hard battles. The UI is wonky sometimes, some unlocks are unclear, it doesn't have enough ascension shenanigans, but overall the game is great and hits all the spots for me. The surreal creature design is awesome, fights are never trivial even on lower levels, and catchinh 'em all is so much more fun when "'em all" are Lovecraftian. Really appreciate the game, hope to see it…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a really good game like 60% of the time, but the game is far more reliant on RNGsus than some people would have you believe, and the difficulty spikes is insane. You're expected to trade your lower-level monsters for higher level ones, but the stuff you use to heal is also the stuff you use to tame, and you sometimes need sacrifice multiple monsters to get a higher level one. The game has an attrition problem. Difficulty seems overtuned. It's the same problem a lot of Dungeons & Dragons…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →At first, I didn’t think there was anything wrong with a game that leans more toward puzzle-solving rather than casual, relaxing, wipe-the-board gameplay. However, after playing it several times, I still don’t feel like I’m actually enjoying the experience. I think the biggest issue is that the game is extremely consuming, both cognitively and psychologically. A challenging game isn’t inherently a bad thing, but this one doesn’t feel rewarding when you overcome those challenges. Instead, it…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wonderful deckbuilding roguelike, 9/10. Don't worry about the negative reviews thrashing the difficulty - there are different difficulty levels, and if you have any experience with deckbuilding roguelikes (and you think carefully as you play), you won't have too much trouble beating the game. In my two runs so far (once in easy and another in normal), I've managed to beat the game without any 'OP' items or events. From how I'm playing, I've noticed that runs can move slowly when you think…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fantastic art and creative direction. Weak, short and shallow gameplay. The levels are too short (8x7 minute battles before the level boss) so you don't actually ''build'' a deck as much as you have a bunch of transient monsters coming in and out of your pile of cards. It doesn't feel like you're assembling a roster, it's so quick and short I finish every level unsatisfied, wishing it were at least twice as long. I couldn't assemble a deck or get attached to monsters because THE LEVELS ARE…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So deck tamer scratches an itch that I think other roguelikes or deck builders just can't itch. But as much as I've been enjoying this game. It feels like I've gotten the most I'm going to get out of it. The good is once you get over the aggressive and very punishing learning curve of this game it can be very fun. The monster designs are top notch and have alot creativity to them. Being able to extract abilities and moves from one monster and move them to another to make them stronger is an…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →When I play a Roguelike I look for 3 things. 1) Complete freedom to make a busted build. 2) Complete randomness so each run feels different. 3) Each fight could be your last. This game does all of these things exceptionally well. I literally have no complaints. If you are a p***y and hate hard games, don't bother.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Actually an incredibly deterministic deck builder. Very good, especially if you want RNG to virtually not exist. In this game you can truly min-max to a degree that is impressive. I truly recommend if you enjoy deterministic min-maxing.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Had some fun here and the art is nice. However, compared to other deckbuilders or strategic roguelikes out there that I enjoy (wildfrost, hunters moon, rogue voltage, menace from the deep, monster train) I felt like I had no control over whether I'd be able to make any good combos. I really didn't like that the interesting events are not guaranteed (the multi-injector, the golden creature evolver, the curse-cure event, etc) and that they are in random orders each run-through. What good is the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →im a fiend for cool creatures, and this game hits the mark perfectly every single time, and devs are brilliant, listens to community and even hosts events where you can submit creatures and get them added to the game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty frustratingly RNG driven and low creativity on high difficulty. There's plenty of strategy and you can play well, but on the higher difficulties if you lowroll your tames or don't get any synergistic creatures in your later battles you can just flat out lose. Early creatures are pretty much fodder except for deploy skills and buffs by the end of a run so whether or not you can win relies heavily on hitting good creatures in your last 3-4 floors and then not missing your tame on them,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Combat involves 3 on 3 fights in each lane. Turn order is determined by speed (green number). If speed is tied, both moves take place even if a creature dies. If enemy is at 1 health and you have the preferred food, you can tame it. The key to the game is taming creatures to use for later battles. After completing a battle, you are offered food, items, and a reward. There are 2 choices of creatures and rewards, so player needs to be plan ahead. The player needs to complete 8 battles to reach…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →(This review focuses on the appeal of later difficulties for expirienced deckbuilding fans, and likely does not accurately reflects what playing this game feels like on starting difficulties and/or if you are new to the genre.) TL, DR: Decktamer is a very thinky deckbuilder with both tactical and strategic elements. Runs on Very Hard are long, usually between 1.5-2.0 hours. Punishments for mistakes are harsh and long-lasting, but the game technically allows safe-scumming for the players who…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is an incredible deckbuilder. You have so many decisions to make every turn that it's a fantastic amount of fun. Definitely worth it, even at full price. Challenging and really fun. (I played the beta for about 10 hours about 18 months ago, and now have just revisited it on release day.. it was a must buy for me.)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I usually don't leave reviews on games i refund because most of the time i feel like they're just not for me but i want to leave an encouragement for this one since i feel like it has a lot of potential. The game is very fun and i love the weird, hand drawn artwork. The monster book is also really nice and i really like the little lore blurbs inside, they're well written and add a lot to the atmosphere of the game. I also like the way runs progress though i feel it could really use some sort…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Absolutely beautiful game. The creatures seem all hand-drawn, almost a miracle in this day and age of AI, and the lore is interesting and makes you want to explore more of this weird world. The entire way this game is made, the diary entries and all just scream "work of love". It has so much love for detail, like when you watch "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" or "Baby Driver" and think "wow, this entire movie is just so well made!" I saw people complain about the difficulty, but I don't…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So I played this game for 3 runs now, after reading some brutal reviews. I always picked the highest difficulty available (easy/normal/hard/...) and the next available hardest boss (A/B/C/...) and currently, while going in blind, I was not even close to losing a run. I might got lucky, but what I wanna say by this is that the difficulty is definitely fine (by now). I don't enjoy hard and higher as much, cuz it means to sacrifice way more monsters forever just to tank a hit, while having…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Mechanics are really well thought out, very unique in terms of art style and combat. People who are complaining about the game being to hard just haven't learned the game well. Get good
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is the bee's knees, if the bee had about 10+ mutagens after I syringed the F outta it. Really nice gameplay loop, still feels fresh after 20 odd hours, has me kicking back, a few tokes here and there, make them decisions and the thing is cookin G. Not gonna lie though, maybe about 5-10 hours of my gametime is me just sitting there in deep thought, like I've managed to pause time in a major chess tournament, all or nothing, but man, I enjoy every moment of that and when a lane opens…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A fun game, but with a design flaw that might be difficult to swallow for some players. This is a monster collecting roguelike that has elements of Inscryption and Magic The Gathering. It has surprisingly deep item management, as well as ways to swap skills and moves between monsters. Every decision matters, and there's hardly ever a clear, obvious answer. And this game FEELS fair. When I fail, it doesn't feel like the game is rigged, it feels like I could have made different decisions that…

positive · AI labelView post →This is more of a neutral than a not recommend. I enjoy the core concept and the gameplay but it has some issues that would make me hold off on a recommendation for now. The worst problem of the game, is its optimization. This game has no right to draw this much processing power but that can hopefully be fixed. A lot of reviews complain about the difficulty being too hard which I don't agree with, having beaten boss 1, 2, 3 on normal, hard, very hard in order in one to two tries each.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The concept and art are great. Balance needs tuned big time though, it is brutally hard and card abilities seem fiat with very little synergy or ramp. Will update review as balance patches roll out
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A non traditional deck builder, in that you can remove cards at will, and lose them in battle if they die. You can really aim to gain/aquire the ones you want, vs pick 1 of 3 offered after each fight (like in StS for example). You can also move card abilities from one to another, making quite the unique beast/monster. Runs are a bit short, but still very fun and engaging, I do hope they push this game a bit further/deeper. Just try the free demo, it's a very good game, and there is…

Fallout TTW (I'm counting it as 1 game because I would never play vanilla FO3) Resident Evil 4 Remake Digimon World Dusk Digimon Story Time Stranger Once Upon a Katamari Balatro DeckTamer Elden Ring 7 Days To Die Kingdom Hearts 2
neutral · AI labelView post →A very content-heavy mix between a deck builder and monster tamer seemingly inspired by Made in Abyss. As someone who has, altogether, over 2k hours in StS across many platforms, I didn't mind the difficulty at all. I hope the developers stick to their vision for the game and keep expanding on it. I am greatly enjoying my time with it!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hidden gem. Should be more popular. Don't know how this was not on my radar until now. Plays like the mainline Pokémon game series meets Slay the Spire. Mechanically interesting and great card variation. Dev feedback: Would be nice to have a longer mode as acquired teams feel like you have a very short time with them, would like a 20-30 game mode rather 8. And a game mode option to save teams from previous runs for a no tame run. Would happily pay for some DLC.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun but the campaign is short, you can finish the 4 difficulties in couple of hours. Yes you can start over to discover and tame the remaining beasts or try new combos but knowing you finished the game idk. There are in-game mods that give you some challenges and handicap you which I’m not a fan. It’s a new game so I’d give it a 7.8/10, hoping it gets new dlcs and stuff in the future.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A warning for the weak. This is a VERY hard game. If you like easy to get through, battles that don't need some planning, this game is not for you. It is REALLY hard, even in the easy, beginner mode. It is brutally hard, but I find myself coming back to try it again. The first few levels are not too bad, but the difficulty ramps up very quickly. After playing several playing over and over, I have found there is usually some trick or tactic to use to get to the next level. Again, this is…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've played tons of roguelike deckbuilders, and this one truly seems special. It leverages some unique risk/reward mechanics as you work to tame enemy creatures while sacrificing your own in order to pull off wins. Shout out to the art style, bestiary & lore entries as well. It's rare that games in this genre can captivate you with the actual universe being built but I love the direction here. It's challenging, fun, and has engaging mechanics...can't ask for much more when it comes to a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Simple at first glance. 8 combats per run ~1h to 3h per run (the latter if you're like me and take your sweet time) (more game modes unlocked afterwards, like endless mode) 2 or 3 enemies at a time (with 1 or 2 waiting to replace them between turns) Each creature has "talents" (passives or effects when they come into play) and "moves" (active skills) You know which move enemies will take in advance. You can capture an enemy using limited food items. That creature is now yours to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm an artist and a horror fanatic, so the creature designs immediately lured me in. The art is absolutely fantastic, and it even does a bit of heavy lifting as I'm not sure the game's tone/atmosphere would succeed without it. I like how creatures go from recognizable/fantastical (reminiscent of real animals) to absolute nightmare fuel the deeper you venture into the map. I think the majesty and the power levels of the monsters scale appropriately, and some of the strongest monsters are…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A fun adaptation of the pokemon card game with lots of great decision making and decent long term planning over a run. Cool creature designs. Good music. Lots of difficulty adjusters, though still a bit on the easier side overall if you're good at these strategy roguelikes. Great game!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great deck builder style game! It's very unique, very addicting, yes it's hard but most of these games are. Obviously as you play it will become easier and easier. Definitely recommend
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Basic mechanics on surface, but with surprising depth. Monsters you tame are unique and interesting The game conveys its atmosphere really well with great graphics. I love that it is difficult and mistakes can cost you the run, while allowing for redos at lower difficulties. It suffers from lack of variety of enough events, which become repetitive quite fast as you see ~15 each run. Regardless, it scratches the deck building need while immersing you in an awesome environment and not being…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In a world that's being flooded by AI slop left and right, Decktamer isn't just a breath of fresh air, it's a celebration of art. This game is gorgeous, clever, original, and has a great soundtrack. It's extremely easy to get into, yet has a lot more depth than you might initially think. I love that it's a roguelike card game, but without most of the standard tropes. This isn't about card draw or mana, it's about creatures. I especially love that creatures have permadeath, it makes it so I view…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Combining a monster collector with rouguelikes and card games is the absolutely perfect combination for me, so I was naturally curious. Many comments said that the game is too hard in higher difficulties to beat and only specific strategies could do it, which made me almost hold off on buying it. I thought that the game might not be polished enough yet. I'm so glad that I bought it anyway! Huge strategic depth, a ton of fun, even at the hardest difficulty and I have seldomly used the same…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like the game, but I cannot recommend it. I've played a lot of roguelikes and deckbuilders, and I can't help but feel Decktamer has great bones, but the mid game is dull and becomes RNG heavy. The game relies on selecting certain synergies per run. In the beginning, the themes are cohesive and runs can be consistently played. As cards unlock, card selection skews a lot more chaos. Difficulty scales by taking things away. No side effects to make new strategies. It's uninteresting. I…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very difficult game, but a great satisfaction when you pull off some crazy combos. Highly recommend for those who like roguelike games with great depth. It seems easy at start, but then you try it and do some crazy combos and find yourself in love with it :)

negative · AI labelView post →this is weird... Turn based tactical card battler. The monsters have some significant strategic depth on them, with interesting combos There's a lot of complexity, and you'll completely change your team ~twice over the course of a run that could be 30-40 minutes, so a lot of the gameplay is re-reading your own cards to make sure you understand them
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great idea, but unfortunately not the best execution. I catch myself overthinking every single move instead of actually having fun, mostly because the abilities are so complicated and difficult to use for very little reward. They call it a deck-building game, but you don't really build your deck. You use the cards you're given, and once the enemies get too strong, you have to trash them. That doesn't really feel like deck-building to me. I also really don't like having to throw away cards…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is an extremely fun and addicting game. Every card depicts a fictional organism, with its own stats and unlockable bestiary log. You essentially build up a deck, starting from small or cute wildlife up to extremely powerful predators, and then take this team of beasts up against disturbing god-like entities. The logs, while small, are incredibly well done and reference real life taxonomy. Whoever created this game has an appreciation for the real flora and fauna of Earth. Numerous…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly, this game is of the best Deck building roguelikes out there. I'm shocked that it doesn't get the recognition it deserves. I have just recently beat the secret final boss (No spoilers) and even when faced with the grueling difficulty of the pioneer mode, the game never felt stale even for a second. The mutation system just makes every run feel fresh and unique, combined with the incredible art style and sound design that makes the game's creatures and locations feel alive. Highly…

It almost deterred me from playing the it. i have beaten 3 of the 5 bosses on the harderst difficulty within two or three times with different kind of decks even. So if youre already interested in playing this game don't let the shrubs change your mind:) But to be fair to the scrubs, the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I hate leaving negative comments when the game is a fine game, but ultimately, if I knew what I knew now, I wouldn't have bought it. I'm not even saying I will fully stop playing it, but I would not have bought it. While on over view it sounds like its going to be an unforgiving card and creature game, what you quickly find out is that it is much more like a puzzle game with random items that show up and you have to hope you got the random items or you will just not be able to finish the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've played a lot of roguelikes and this one just isn't very fun. The game feels like it's an early access title falsely being advertised as a finished game. There's not enough options for events, you only get two choices for most events and battles. The bosses are too hard even on the easiest difficulty. It's a game where all you do is hope you get good rng, and most of the time you don't get good rng. The card balancing is also really bad, most cards are completely useless.
