What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 175 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (6,309 of 6,755 positive).
Players praise Legend of Grimrock as a faithful tribute to classic dungeon crawlers like Dungeon Master and Eye of the Beholder. [1][2][3] Some reviewers note the game's challenging puzzles and combat, which can feel repetitive or frustrating. [4][5][6] A few players mention technical issues, such as crashes on Mac, but overall the game is well-received. [7][8]

I was hoping for a true dungeon crawler similar to "The Bard's Tale" or "Might & Magic: World of Xeen". This is a game of moving in circles trying to hit the enemy while moving sideways out of their way just in time to avoid their attack then turning toward them as they move into the square you just vacated. You then hit them again, move and turn (rinse and repeat). If you might enjoy kiting enemies in constant …

Finally got around to actually beating this game after owning it for over a decade. I always found it intriguing but for some reason never put the time in to actually get more than a few floors in. Just finished my playthrough on hard difficulty with no map. I tried using a book to make maps but got frustrated by my lack of grid paper and gave up on that fairly quickly. I found that the dungeons weren't too …

An excellent throw back dungeon crawler, but also one that's timeless in it's own right. Legend of Grimrock is a pretty obvious successor to 1987s Dungeon Master. Like many RPGs of the time, it's the source of a lot of industry firsts. In DM's case, it was the introduction of the "paper doll" interface for equipment management. Yes, it's that old. If you've ever played a game with that style of UI, you have DM to …

A wonderful dungeon delving delight. Truly evokes the spirit of pen and paper Dungeons & Dragons few games can. I especially like how they simulate mages preparing spells. It's easy to select what runes you want for your next spell cast outside of combat but arduous within it, communicating how mages struggle to maintain concentration in the heat of battle. I undertand why this is considered a classic, especially …

Really cool game, pretty much modern Eye of the Beholder, even the secret buttons use exact or similar pattern. Anyone who enjoys dungeon crawlers/blobbers should like it, a dozen of levels, multiple spells, items and collectibles, items and enemies could offer more variety but game isn't long, so it shouldn't matter that much. The only two things I didn't like are, some creature designs felt completely out of place …

86% of the 175 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Legend of Grimrock. The complaint that keeps coming up: combat relies on kiting and timing. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Legend of Grimrock was generally well received by both critics and gamers upon release, garnering an average critic score of 82 from 49 reviews on Metacritic. Reviewers generally praised the game for faithfully recreating the gameplay of old-school action RPGs into the modern era. GameSpy gave the game a 4.5/5 "Great" rating, saying that "the best aspect of Grimrock is its puzzles, which have been largely abandoned by RPG developers in this age of Internet hints and walkthroughs." Destructoid's Patrick Hancock awarded the game a score of 95/100, claiming "Grimrock takes an old-school feel and injects it seamlessly into the modern era." Edge said that the game wasn't "a love letter to…

A while ago I played with two groups of friends as a "puzzle through the game together" via stream sort of gathering. I made a set of custom portraits for each group. It was fun! Here's the first game's party:

You probably don't, because it failed to sell much. Which sucks, as it's gorgeous, fun, challenging and replayable. More tactical puzzle than RPG

I'm aware of how hipster and funny this sounds, but the only grid-based dungeon crawlers I've ever played are Ultima 1 and Wizardry 1, but I do love King's Field and Shadow Tower. So far, this game absolutely rules!

Here are a few I hold dear: [Beyond All Reason](https://www.beyondallreason.info/) - FOSS RTS game about robots destroying each other. Which sucks, as it's a really solid, beautiful little fantasy squad tactics game. Not a full RPG (just complex, difficult battles) but constantly varied and clever, with good replay value and an editor.

It is essentially "What if a 80s/90s Dungeon Crawler was made in 2012?" well, you'd have LoG. Legends of Grimrock is not "Daggerfall reimagined" or "Dungeon Crawling done with modern gameplay aspects" it's not turn-based like some classic dungeon crawlers, well it kind of is but the combat is in real time and unless you are ready to be part of an awfully niche community of gamers - and I really…

Dungeons are nicely done, some include secret passages, rooms and traps beyond all comprehension. positive · AI labelView post →I love so much about this game but it relies on so many timed twitchy puzzles that require you to have lightning finger dexterity and make zero mistakes. Legend of Grimrock 2 has a roster of epic hero classes... and then they have the Farmer. Can't gain exp unless they eat something. This makes them the most powerful class in the game. 🎮 #gaming #RPG

neutral · AI labelView post →I want a new game. On the PC. I want a kinda old school dungeon crawler. Something like Eye of the Beholder or Legend of Grimrock. Suggestions?
neutral · AI labelView post →Ahh man back long long ago when Electronic Arts could actually do no wrong. The Bard's Tale was a totally formative videogame experience for me, because of this game I still have a deep love of first person dungeon crawlers (Dungeon Master, Legend of Grimrock, The Dark Spire, Etrian Odyssey, etc.)
neutral · AI labelView post →If you like running around in circles and hitting something you might not always hit. This is the game for you. Interfaces and party actions shouldn't be so complexed. Multiple enemies just don't help either. Make a decent base engine. A simple one. Then make the dungeon crawling and puzzle solving as hard as you like. Don't want to do that. At least put in a turn based option..? No.... Just not impressive or enjoyable to recommend from me
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game isn't so terrible that I didn't beat it (it didn't take 41 hours either, I just left the menu open overnight twice). The "real-time combat" is simply not very fun. Neither kiting enemies on a 2x2 square nor face-tanking two crabs in a corridor via clicking on inventory items is enjoyable, especially when your attacks nonsensically whiff Morrowind-style. Apparently Grimrock 2 is better, but I won't bother checking.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →old school part based dungeon crawler akin to dungeon master, elder scrolls arena, and might & magic. filled to the brim with clever secrets, and head scratching puzzles. Don't bother with the negative reviews, most of them probably have never played a challenging rpg before. worth the $15 and def worth the $2 when its on sale.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not much to say other than the fact its a really awesome dungeon crawler. Lots of cool enemies, tons of secrets and items to find. Yeah, dope game
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Yup, a good example of this kinda thing outside of exploration puzzle games (or puzzle dungeon crawlers like Legend of Grimrock 2) is Rain World but thats ALSO an action ish game.
