TL;DR: This game isn't really a sequel to Moonlighter 1. It's more like a Frankenstein-style hybrid between Moonlighter 1's lore and Hades' mechanics , but done really, really poorly. There is basically nothing in common with the first game, aside from a few bits of story and the fact that you still have a shop to run. update: i have since refunded it. the game is simply not fun, and ruins all goodwill created by the first game. if you want hades, go get hades 2. it's the same price, and right now it's actually cheaper on sale even with moonlighter 2's early access discount. if you preferred the first games gameplay, stick to playing the first game. this one adopts a more hades-like approach, in that it isn't just a zelda style …

What a fantastic sequel! I love the new Hades-style dungeons, the backpack puzzle, and even the shop management system got a brand new roguelike mechanic! I don't really know how to update this review. I waited till the full game came out before sealing my opinion on the game and it couldn't save it at all. First of all the shop is completely different from the first game, not horrible but it definitely just doesn't have the same feeling as the first game and ultimately just feels repetitive and unfulfilling, the new shop perks and bunny system are interesting but it's nothing we haven't seen before cause they are just the trinkets from the first…

Good ingredients, but somehow a worse game than the original Moonlighter 2 has the ingredients of a good game. The basic loop is still fun, the shop is still enjoyable, and the new perk system is actually pretty interesting. But honestly, it feels like they have taken a lot of the things that made the original Moonlighter charming and satisfying and replaced them with things that are just worse. The biggest one for me is the item gathering. In the original, most of your materials came from…

I expected Moonlighter 2, but got something closer to Slay-the-Hades. The game removed a lot of the things I liked about it --- for example, traditional dungeons. Instead, it adds a bunch of modern mechanics you see in many newer games. Since there are no more dungeons, you now move from island to island. You do this by selecting nodes with different rewards, similar to Slay the Spire and many other games inspired by it. There’s also a system similar to “blessings” (or perks/boons or…

I can't recommend Moonlighter 2 at this stage of early access. This shows the bones of a fantastic game. But don't spoil that potential by enduring an unpolished experience when you could wait a few months and enjoy a vastly superior game once everything has been balanced by the great team at Digital Sun. That's the conundrum longtime Moonlighter 1 fans are facing right now. I'm a huge Digital Sun fan. I play a ton of games and they're one of my favorite developers. I truly admire their…

i want to like this game. I did for about the first half of my playtime. It's pretty and smooth but the repetition loop is too narrow as of right now. Literally: dungeon>dungeon>shop>dungeon>dungeon>shop over and over. Maybe talk to an npc for some upgrades every few days if you can afford it. If the game was priced more fairly for the content you actually get then my review might be more positive, but as it stands, I cannot reccomend anyone spend 30 dollars on this.

While the game on its own is good, entertaining, and at times fairly challenging, I don't feel amazing recommending it if you played the first Moonlighter and are looking for more of that same experience. UPDATE (11/24/25): The stuttering issues have now been resolved! The game is now much smoother, with no more stuttering while rolling or loading in new levels. The game now runs much more smoothly on the Steam Deck and ROG Ally. I found that it runs better with Vsync disabled. This is definitely one of those painful reviews in that I like the art style, the basics of combat, items and the shop, progression, pacing, yada yada, but there's just one crippling massive flaw that holds me back from enjoying or recommending it. At this point in time (November 19, 2025), I cannot recommend this game. The performance is simply not up to par. On my really decent PC, which has a 4080, among other things, it unfortunately does not run smoothly at 4K, 2K, or 1080p. When loading assets for the first time, there are always micro-stutters that greatly detract from the gaming experience. It stutters constantly, so to speak. No matter what settings I use. I started the game straight on hard difficulty, and honestly, I don’t think the combat system was thoroughly tested in that state. Right now, there are just too many factors that lead to frustration rather than challenge. First, the camera. It often makes it difficult to properly track your character, and enemies can disappear behind objects far too easily. In a fast-paced roguelite, that’s a serious issue. Second, there’s no real sense of input priority. Dodging feels inconsistent, and…

Overall, I am loving this game. Just got to the end of the early access content in two sittings (approximately 12 hours). There are a few rough edges here that I would like to see smoothed out before full release though: - Combat and balance - 1) Ranged enemies that charge a shot (mainly in The Collection area) should have some sort of stagger to interrupt their charged shots. This is especially frustrating when you are comboing them and they charge a shot in such a way that the camera…

The negative reviews are ridiculous and unfair. Don't be dissuaded. Moonlighter 2 is a RICH experience. It feels like being a kid and being handed a toy box that is CONSTANTLY spitting out new toys to play with. While there are quests and goals like usual RPG's, most of your real achievements are goals you've set on your own in order to unlock powerful upgrades or store improvements that make you feel invincible or twice as rich as ever. Yes I'm technically writing an early access review, no I'm not critiquing it on how finished it is (the full release it next week but there will be a major update so it should be less buggy). I want to preface this by saying that I did not play the first Moonlighter and only picked up Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault after its 1.0 release. This means I ultimately cannot compare it to the previous installment. That said, I cannot share some of the criticism people have directed at it. Namely, the bashing of the new art style feels disingenuous to me. The art style is cute, cohesive and distinct. Yes, it isn't the pixel art of the first game, but that doesn't automatically make it…

This has been an ongoing bug since the introduction of a feature where you can choose to continue a the run (so..months ago). Selecting the option to start it crashes the game, or sometimes when finishing a round it crashes the game. Losing all progress made in that run (items, events, story points etc). It is frustrating to deal with this because all the time you put is lost and seemingly at random.

I should start by saying that Moonlighter 2 is absolutely better than the first game. not that impressive a feat in my opinion but its only fair to say. my primary reason for not recomending the game is that its advertised as an RPG with rouge like elements. where as it seems to me that its a rouge like and little else. there is very little to chase to improve your character, want to hit harder? there is no weapon to seek out or materials to gather and forge, instead increase the odds of…

I loved the first game, played it until the wheels fell off. This new iteration is not what I was expecting to be completely honest, but I was willing to suspend my bias and give the game a try. It's alright but it really doesn't live up to the original. My main problem with the game is that the combat is kind of just annoying and a little boring. No, but it is quite good nevertheless, and maybe it will be a masterpiece after it is finished. This is a mediocre game and a bad sequel. I’m not a fan of roguelikes, but the first Moonlighter was a pleasant exception. It was more of a roguelite, with well-designed progression and an interesting story. The sequel, however, is just mediocre. There’s a lot of grind, it isn’t fun to play, and the mechanics are either poorly explained or simply don’t work properly. This game is really fun so far! My primary issue that keeps me from wanting to pick it up again is that exiting the game skips you forward to the next part of the day/night cycle. Since I often have only small bits of time in which to play, this feels like a punishment. I've lost several in-game days just because I have to stop at an inopportune time, and saving doesn't let you come back to the moment you left. I'm sure this is meant to prevent cheating or save scumming, but I'd rather let…

I love Moonlighter, and I think there are truly redeemable qualities in Moonlighter 2, but I can not in good conscience recommend it to anyone until they patch some of the unfun and frustrating mechanics. The exponential growth in shop prices near the back half of the game, made everything I did in the early game feel pointless. Moonlighter 2 is the kind of sequel that makes you wonder if the developers were locked in separate rooms and fed design documents through a malfunctioning pneumatic tube system. Every mechanic feels like it was created in total isolation by someone who only communicated with the rest of the team through passive aggressive sticky notes. The result is a tangle of detached mechanics that crash into each other like a demolition derby run by people who have never seen a car. The game strays so far…

As a fan of the original, I’m disappointed the dungeon exploration lost its fun, and the islands system didn’t work for me. The story is average, missing features from the first game. Old weapons are far better,no weapons be sold. Bosses are too easy and repetitive. After beating them, it’s just boring farming. Sadly a letdown

I thoroughly loved my experience through the first game, but the second one has many rough edges that I feel potential players should be aware of in advance. 1) Stability & Polish - Every launch a bug Probably the worst offender here. The switch to 3D brings with it many edge cases in terms of movement that I don't know were thoroughly considered or tested. Numerous times I have been caught in infinite falling animations unable to escape because a destructible was placed too close to a wall…

Enjoying the 2nd Moonlighter far more than the first. The concepts are the same but the execution of the combat is MUCH improved (ML1 combat felt very janky in comparison). The inventory management minigame is also much improved. I love storing up various items of a specific category, waiting for that one rare or epic to appear, and then creating a huge chain reaction that skyrockets their value. Eagerly waiting on the 1.0 release to start a new playthrough with whatever goodies they've added…

Overall, feels like the game is designing gameplay for children more than the previous game. I hoped for something that elevated the mechanics of the first game rather than watered them down for a younger audience. Maybe the first game was really popular with kids and they leaned into it, but it's really frustrating for me. A general trend I feel is all to common in gaming these days. -Weapons don't have stats, I don't know if the next level of the weapon actually does more damage, it doesn't…

All the changes seem so unnecessary. The game felt like a very cozy, couch game in the first version. Now, I feel like I am always having to rush through everything. Upgrading weapons rarely helps. They always have a negative trait - so why wouldn't I just keep the original one? I have lost interest in combat, the only reason I force myself to keep trying is because I am hoping something fun wil actually happen. Now it has been weeks since I have picked this up, and I will most likely…

It's good, but it's not the best rouge lite title out there. Feels kinda like a watered-down moonlighter 1 had a baby with a watered down Hades 1. Moonlighter 2 doesn't live up to Moonlighter 1, and the implemented Hades-like features are fleshed out better in Hades 1. Moonlighter 2 tries to be both at the same time, and falls short. Play Moonlighter 1 and Hades 1 first. They're more worth your time. If you finish them and you're itchin for a little more of that flavor, then play Moonlighter…

One of those rare sequels that feels like an improvement on the original in every way, and it's not even out of early access! Looking forward to what else they have to add in the future.

When gaming media like @playerdua and @zidnyman played the game on their channels, personally intrigued by the gameplay and visuals on offer. I had tried the prequel to Moonlighter previously, but the classic 2D pixel art style didn't quite appeal to me at the time and didn't finish it. However, this sequel shifts away from the original's classic 2D pixel art, adopting an isometric 3D view with a painterly art style. The core formula remains intact venturing into dungeons at night to gather…
