Reigns
Developer Nerial
Reigns is a 2016 strategy video game developed by Nerial and published by Devolver Digital. In the game, players control a medieval king who they must help rule for as long as possible. The monarch receives petitions and questions from advisers, which are represented by cards. The player can choose between two responses to the adviser, which has an effect on one or more of the kingdom's four aspects. From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 165 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (7,067 of 8,142 positive).
Players find the simple swipe mechanic engaging but note it becomes repetitive over time. [1][2][3] The game's humor and art style are praised, but RNG and unclear consequences frustrate some. [4][5][6] Many recommend it for short sessions, though completionists may find it tedious. [7][8][9]

The game feels very repetitive, with RNG heavily influencing the experience. Without a guide, progressing the story requires grinding through the same scenarios repeatedly while trying to guess the correct sequence of actions. Over time, I found myself stuck, encountering the same events over and over again as I struggled to figure out how to advance the story.

Things I like: - Minimalistic art style is charming and "clean". Animations are smooth. - Sound effects / sound design is minimal but does the job; fake voices / accents are funny. - The dialogue / writing is quite good, for what it is. Definitely helps to carry the story forward. - The tinder-style interface, coupled with the YES/NO binary choice system is not that bad, and can work well in "choice A choice B" …

The "Tinder for Dictators" Simulator. I thought being a King meant power, wealth, and respect. Turns out, it’s just me sitting on a throne, swiping left and right on people’s problems like I’m looking for a date on a Friday night. The balance in this game is impossible. If I give the people a loaf of bread, the Church gets offended and burns me at the stake. If I tell the Army to relax, the neighboring kingdom …

You play as a medieval king making decisions by swiping left or right on cards. Every choice affects four stats: Church, People, Army, and Treasury. Let any stat max out or drop to zero, and your reign ends. Despite it's simplicity, the outcomes can be surprising as you play You'll unlock new characters, events, and cards which carries over between rulers While it can be fun at first, the gameplay gets repetitive …

It's incredible how such a simple concept of just swiping left or right to decide can produce such a fun game with so many possible outcomes. This game is all about experimenting with your choices and balancing the powers in order to keep your character(s) alive as long as possible and, hopefully, being able to eventually reach the good ending.

62% of the 165 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Reigns. The complaint that keeps coming up: gameplay becomes repetitive quickly. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
According to the review aggregator website Metacritic, Reigns received "generally favorable" reviews for its iOS and PC versions. Reviewers generally considered Reigns a fun and unique strategy game. TouchArcade found its gameplay to be interesting and inventive, and Pocket Gamer said that it was "a clever subversion of strategy and casual mobile play that makes you laugh, cry, and think". In contrast, The Guardian felt that Reigns was more of a whimsical experience than a serious strategy game. Critics debated the game's presentation. Rock Paper Shotgun said that it forced the player to alter their approach to rulership, as it changed him from being an idealist who wanted to make moral…

I felt the pixel style had some readability issues, and I was getting a bit frustrated with the medium in general.

The rush of tinder swiping soon gives way to an empty feeling of yearning for more. Better and real connections that truly sate the empty hunger within every one of us. Oh, yeah, the game is all of the above too.

neutral · AI labelView post →This one has the most basic gameplay of all the Reigns games, but I don't think that's a bad thing. Some of the other games get overly complicated and forget the appeal of the original, which is balancing all four meters by making yes or no choices. There's also a LOT of cards, and situations can change based on the choices you make. There's also multiple endings! The best ending is kind of hard to figure out, but not impossible.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Reigns is what happens when Tinder, medieval politics and an extremely unsafe workplace join forces. You play as a succession of kings who must respond to every royal problem by swiping a card left or right. Each decision affects the Church, the people, the army and the treasury. Allow any one of them to become too weak or too powerful and your reign ends—usually violently, embarrassingly or both. It sounds almost too simple, but there is considerably more hiding beneath the oversized…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Some events are either overlapping eachother and make them dissapear or when you do the supposed thing, it doesn't register and makes you to do that thins over and over again. I swear I collected the blood ruby 4 times in a run. ALSO some achievemt, nts are not even register. I SWEAR Devolver cannot code achievements even if you put a revolver to their head. I normally at least give devolver games a positive but for a text based game, these are essencials.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Interesting game, enjoyed the concept on a similar game called Sort the Court! but, this game has a lot of choices that don't make sense ever. There are things like the dungeon that seem to be totally RNG that can keep you trapped and end your reign just because the RNG keeps you there indefinitely. Another example is the dots indicating what you gain and lose in each aspect of your kingdom. Some make sense but others are completely confusing why they would go up or down and by how much they do…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A unique game where you swipe left or swipe right to the event occurring in your kingdom which are usually delivered by a particular character (the head of the church for instance). Swipe right for “Yes” or positive responses and left for the reverse. You are running a kingdom, as the king, and you need to balance four aspects of your kingdom: church, people, army and economy. If any of these reach zero, or the max value, your king is killed and your reign is over. How you respond to each…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not much content, yet very repetitive. To progress the story, you'll have to grind out the same scenarios over and over until you happen to select the correct series of options. The game also occasionally glitches, making the cards cover the text font, so you can't see what prompt you're responding to, which is frustrating. I don't recommend this game.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun at the start, but you soon realise that this game is just a massive waste of time. Some of the decisions make no sense as to why they affect certain stats. It gets easier when you unlock the ability to see how your decisions will affect the stats, but that only last so long and sometimes your ♥♥♥♥♥♥ no matter what. Don't recommend this game.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I personally just don't like the game. I am forcing myself t complete it, but there is 0 enjoyment with it. All the choices you make are not your own they are really based off of RNG, which can make it hard to progress if not impossible with bad enough luck. I know its a cheap game, and its a bit of a gimmick/niche kind of game but its just not for me, and probably not for others that value their own time.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Reigns presents itself with a deceptively simple premise: as a king, your only role is to make decisions by swiping left or right on cards representing various advisors, events, and dilemmas. Each choice affects four pillars - Religion, People, Army, and Wealth - and maintaining balance between them is essential for survival. If any pillar becomes too powerful or too weak, your reign ends and a new one starts. The core gameplay loop is built around learning the consequences of each card over…
