What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 71 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (205 of 264 positive).
Players praise it as the best pure pirate RPG available, despite its age and rough edges. [1][2][3] Many recommend using community mods like Combined Mod or Gentlemen of Fortune to fix bugs and add content. [1][4][5][6] Some reviewers find it very new-player-unfriendly with minimal guidance and a steep learning curve. [7][1][8]

game pisses me off ... why the ♥♥♥♥ is there no tutorial? why is there no map? why do you start out with a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ slow as ♥♥♥♥ ship that gets outmanouvered by even a slug, why do you have 0 crew? why is this game so hardcore even at the easiest difficulty? no path helping direction helping or anything? it just throws you into it and shows you a middle finger.. but the game is fun once you figure out how to ..

This game is not "good." It has an extremely high learning curve, no tutorial, a clunky interface, poorly laid out and unintuitive quest objectives, sub-par writing, semi-frequent crashes, and is heavily dependent on the community "Combined Mod" to smooth out its rough edges. That said, it is the best pure Pirate RPG available. But that probably says more about the gaping hole that exists in the market and less …

It's old, rugged, unpolished, not new player friendly. But it's still the best pirate life simulator out there. Which says a lot about the state of this genre...Anyway, this is actually still playable and a lot of fun!

A childhood classic, surprised to see it holds up to this day, there's a lot of jank that you can avoid if you know about it, absolutely read a guide if you pick it up, in addition to getting the combined mod (bug fixes mostly) or GOF (Content expansion). Amazing game if you can stomach the controls, must have for anyone who's an RPG fan with a pirate theme

The ship battles of this game is the best of any pirate games I've seen ( even over the super popular AC Black Flag)/ PROS : - Awesome ship-to-ship-battles - Big Caribbean map - Plenty of quests and secrets to make you travel and explore - High replayability : 4 nations with different questlines and territory will offer unique experiences - Enough challenge both on land at at sea. CONS : - I'm writing this in 2019. …

60 of 143 · most liked firstI love this game and I remember playing it sometime like 10-11 years ago, Playing it on my dad's computer was the bomb and I had searched for this game for so long, with nowhere to buy it, sometimes one would have to resort to finding it in the not so legitimate ways, but when I seen that this game was being released on steam I knew I was gonna get it the second it came out. If you like Pirates, Swordfighting, Cannons, and Booty! This game is definitely for you. Although it has outdated…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Akella's sequel to their pirate RPG, Sea Dogs (2000), was bought by Disney and renamed Pirates of the Caribbean as a tie-in for its 2003 film Despite a few other changes, it had little to do with the film. That didn't stop it from being an incredibly fun pirate sandbox for many, though. Arrrh!
positive · AI labelView post →I was looking forward to playing this after finding it on steam. Brought back some good memories. Unfortunately about five hours into the play a software bug stopped the character from progressing. I requested a refund from Steam but never heard back from them. Very disaapointing both in not beiong able to play the game and in steams nil response.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Their OLDER game (Pirates of the Caribbean) is far better in terms of game play, design, and graphics. This one is almost unplayable in comparison - I wonder if they lost the source code for it and had to start over and hacked together something worse (and out came this game and others)? So many things are badly designed in this game that I doesn't make sense to play it in the year 2020+
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I absolutely love this game. I used to be a huge Sid Meiers' Pirates fan until i found this gem. Similar concept only better graphics, Historically accurate ships. Not the best graphics but its definitely better than SMP. Add the Gentlemen of fortunes mod and it adds more ships and immersion. Always find myself coming back to this one. Would Highly recommend for Low end PC owners who are swashbucklers at heart.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The play-by-play voice of the Portland Sea Dogs, the Double-A affiliate of the Red Sox, Tiedemann will be on the call of Tuesday’s Red Sox game as a part of the Women’s Celebration Night at Fenway Park, which will feature an all-female broadcast team.
neutral · AI labelView post →I purchased it out of respect for the developers since i played it in my youth. I have to say that despite being old, it's the best game with pirates considering how elaborate it is. If you also add Gentlemen of Fortune 1.2 on it, you get a ton of new content and it really makes it worth playing.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I loved this game back in the day, But this version has level scaling I never noticed in the old game release. if you level up to much in a small ship you will end up only facing more powerful ships and crews. some might like this I personally don't I don't mind strong enemie ships But as a pirate I want to encounter weak ships. that are easy to take on, and not that they all from that point on are stronger ships that you can easily lose to. This is just my fustration with this game, The Age…

neutral · AI labelView post →Can’t fault Connolly Early. A couple of months ago he was pitching for the Portland Sea Dogs in AA. Asking him to pitch a do or die game in Yankee Stadium is a lot.
neutral · AI labelView post →Sea Dogs: City of Abandoned Ships is a massive improvement over its predecessors. Quite sophisticated and takes time to pick up, especially in the beginning, but the learning curve is much more user-friendly than in the earlier games. And while there is still barely any guidance on what the player is supposed to do, once you start playing the understanding of how the game works comes easily and naturally through exploration. The atmosphere of the Caribbean era here is probably the main point…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Incredibly deep 17th century captain of a ship RPG. Amazingly accessible too, jump in and learn the ropes and you'll be sailing away in no time. As mentioned great depth, tons of freedom, fun and atmosphere ooze out of this one. Very high recommendation.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While everyone was talking about GTA, a game that I thought was canceled forever was released. If you were a fan of Sea Dogs or any of Akella's work at all, you might remember this one from back in the day. If God of War (05) gameplay mixed with a Pirate theme sound fun check this out.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Actually even collating the top 10 for me was difficult, this'll probably change if I did this next month. As you can see, I have a type. Fun Fact: That POTC game you see? The only tie it has is the Pearl, and the narrator. Otherwise it's just a Sea Dogs game.

neutral · AI labelView post →It feels more divorced from the rest of the game's sense of shared progression than the defunt Sea Dogs Arena mode that had to be cordoned off on its own servers, for which you could at least purchase Letters of Rec with doubloons obtained doing other in-game tasks to increase your standing.
