Fun for the first ~5-10 ish hours (til Day 4-5), then gets very boring, grindy and repetitive. You fight the same bosses and mobs over and over and over again. After each Day (=succesful run) the runs get more difficult, but not in a good way. The mobs get tankier, they hit harder, you get less items and coins, and thus you can afford less upgrades, which is frankly just not fun. Each playable character has its own …

I slept on this when it released and only recently found it; I wasn't expecting *too* much, but honestly this game is outstanding. A key component of what are now called roguelike games is that you should learn by doing, and 95% of the time you die, you should know what you did wrong and understand how to've prevented it. This is an incredible indie gem. It's seems so simple, and yet is deeply tactical. I love how it asks for your concentration all the time, and repays when you do so; in the same token, lose focus for a couple of seconds and you might ruin a flawless run, no matter how upgraded your deck is. Also pulling out combos is super satisfying. I don't usually slip into hyperbolics but this is truly a fantastic game in every …

I really enjoyed playing this game. It's a unique puzzle-like combat and I love how it encourages you to play with different achievements or metrics in mind. My only complaint is that after 368 hours it becomes a little repetitive. But that's probably my fault more than anything. I do wish that I could influence the randomness of my abilities & upgrades a bit more consistently. Some runs are much better than others …

I thought runs would start to feel same-y over time, but because you can choose to prioritize between going fast, making fewer moves, or taking less damage, your decision making can …

95% of the 231 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Shogun Showdown. The complaint that keeps coming up: becomes repetitive after many hours. Deal-breaker or nitpick?

Critics, per Wikipedia

Shogun Showdown received "generally favorable" reviews from critics, according to review aggregator website Metacritic. 94% of critics recommended the game on OpenCritic. In its review, PC Gamer praised the combat which "feels like directing the coolest samurai movie you've ever seen" and lauded the game as a compelling roguelike in the genre's golden age. I tried this one with a pretty negative attitude towards it. Once I started I had a tough time putting it down. This game is worth it at full price and even more so on sale.

Nice pixel graphics, tuneful soundtrack, interesting, turn-based mechanisms. Contrary to what others have claimed, this is not a deckbuilder game, although there are similarities. There is no deck, no drawing, much less depends on luck during the fights. With that said, this is a typical roguelite, offers permanent upgrades for the subsequent runs. A pleasant casual pastime for those who like logic-based games.

There is a lot I could say about this game, but if you like rougelikes this is an easy buy. It is easy to pick up but with a high skill ceiling and the game will allow for creativity in your process as you learn it. Want to set a dozen mines on one tile and one phase the last boss? This game will let you do that. Want to combo every single enemy on the field no matter their health? a Kunai build can do that. Once you learn the game and the RNG there are a lot of fun different ways to use…

There's plenty of positive reviews for SS & for the most part I agree with what they have to say. However, I've noticed a few real problems with this game and as I progress they're becoming more & more pronounced and more & more frustrating. I have a physical issue which makes playing with both hands difficult- it's much easier for me to play games that only require the mouse. 'One-handers' I call 'em (despite some of the more lurid implications of that moniker). I'm finding the mouse…

It's good. After a while it gets stale, but the honeymoon period while you mess with the characters for the first time is really good. I wish there was some kind of true ending, or better yet, an extra zone or boss. It's a roguelike, but after clearing a run on the hardest difficulty there's not much difference between the endings.

That's roguelike. Nice music, design and mechanics. Tactically reminds me «Ronin» which is also turn-based and you need to choose your next move really carefully. So, kinda puzzle. You are a lonely Japanese warrior who kills hundreds and hundreds enemies with his / her wits and weapon you collected during that bloody journey. Small, minimalistic but really enjoyable game.

Fair warning: lots of roguelikes on this list. Just seems like the devs of these games really like 2d non-demanding visuals. And I don't know how low do you need to go, so check these individually. Don't even need a sale for Moonring, which is a retro turn-based RPG, completely free. Runs on a potato. Original Monster Train should work decently well, it's 90% off. Shogun Showdown is really cool, 50% off. Necesse is a very fun Terraria-like, coming out of EA in like a week and on sale now.…

Needs a sequel. The core gameplay is really fun, and the loop could keep players in longer if it didn't get stale after about 60 hours. Totally worth the full price. A good run takes about 35-60 min if you play on higher difficulties, to me this is a perfect time investment for trains, flights or on the couch. TL;DR This is among one of the best roguelike games there is... The music, the sound, the controls and the combat... it all just fits together so well! I also really like how just like with the forerunners of the genre (Slay the Spire) the game can be played just with the mouse and isn't necessarily too over the top in complexity nor is it lacking in it! Now I have some gripes with the game like how the progression system works... ur best bet is to just play with one character for until…

The weapon card system and its upgrades are extremely satisfying — especially when luck finally gives you the perfect setup. Fun little roguelite with unique gameplay. I did get tired of the gameplay loop after about 10 or so hours, but I would still consider it worth the money.

It's a boring as hell card combo puzzler, just like it looks in the video.

Ahhhh nice, this game reawakened my interest for roguelike deckbuilders. I always find too daunting the perspective to invest multiple 30-60 minutes runs in a game that doesn't have much to offer in terms of story. But the tactical gameplay of this game is spot-on, very fun, very challenging, just perfect. Now that I "finished" the game with one character, and after 36hour of doing this, I feel my time with Shogun Showdown is over. Goign through the same process with the other characters could…

Really well made game. Enjoyable thinking gameplay, nicely presented pixel art (the backgrounds are gorgeous) and deep strategy. The gameplay reminds me of a 2D Into The Breach. Less complicated due to having only a 1D battlefield, but the nature and complexity of the moveset makes up for it. Great game.

A simple turn based game that is surprisingly enjoyable. I use it more as a pass time in between work or other games when I'm waiting for friends to jump on. It saves as you play too, so no loss for jumping out and it's turn based, so you can step away whenever without a penalty.

This is a very cool and unique game that combines turn based combat with semi deckbuilding and combat based puzzles. You craft a deck out of different tiles, ranging from simple attacks to techniques such as mirroring your character or manipulating enemy positions. The whole gameplay loop blends very well together and each run differs from the last. There are a handful of different characters, each with their own unique special move and playstyle. There is also a demo of the game if you're not…

Super satisfying well designed and well balanced game. Options are given, tactics are rewarded, wins are satisfying, losses are your own fault. Just buy this full price now if it looks like fun to you, you'll enjoy it.
