What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 185 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (5,068 of 5,565 positive).
Players praise the game's unique vibe, art style, and soundtrack. [1][2][3] Some find the gameplay bland or the humor not to their taste. [4][5] The game is described as a short, exploration-focused collectathon. [6][7][8]

Very cool artstyle and great soundtrack, but gameplay sadly just kinda felt really bland and I got bored of wandering around after a while, if you have the patience and dont mind just pure exploration and talking to random npcs then im sure you might enjoy this more than me.

Sludge Life is a first-person platformer exploration game where you tag surfaces with graffiti, sometimes in hard-to-reach places, and talk to a bunch of more-or-less weird characters. Scoping out potential spots and getting close enough to tag was fun for me. Some were quite easy, others more challenging but nothing extreme. Encountering new characters and chatting them up was enjoyable and amusing, even more so …

A weird, chill, grime-soaked playground that lets you tag walls, talk to bizarre NPCs, and explore a filthy island at your own pace. The platforming with your glider feels smooth, and the lo-fi aesthetic paired with a killer soundtrack makes just hanging out in the world feel great. It’s pretty short and lacks a strong central objective, but as a cozy-yet-trashy vibe trip, it’s well worth a look.

This game drips with character. --literally-- Go around explore The Sludge, meet other taggers and stick it to GLUG! Don't forget to listen to the sick tunez of Big Mud while you're doing it. Fairly short runtime of about 3-4 hours of playtime. In this game you'll effectively be going around exploring the world and meeting it's characters. Whilst the game is effectively a collectathon, the world is filled with many …

Sludge Life is a trippy sandbox game where you go around and spraypaint your graffiti tag on various surfaces. It's a lot like Goat Simulator or Untitled Goose Game, where you just walk around, find funny things in the environment, and explore to your heart's content. The visual style is really nice with the bright colors and design reminiscent of those bizarre 2010s Cartoon Network shows like The Problem Solvers or …

90% of the 185 Steam reviewers we collected recommend SLUDGE LIFE. The complaint that keeps coming up: gameplay can feel bland and boring. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
After its initial 2020 release as a free game on Epic Games Store, numerous reviewers encouraged players to test Sludge Life. The second release (allowing Switch and Steam) in 2021, provided additional reviews to examine the game again. Recognized for its laissez-faire exploration which the developers described as a "walking simulator", early reviews emphasized the humor in the game as well as its strange mood/atmosphere. The game was compared to 2000's Jet Set Radio in its themes, but otherwise more similar to visual media like the programming from Adult Swim or Liquid Television from the mid-1990s. From the initial 2020 release from Epic Games Store, reviewers emphasized the game as…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →SLUDGE LIFE is one of those odd games that made me feel like I was tripping on shrooms. No seriously. The amount of randomness, nonsensical, and ethically questionable decisions you make in the game - especially if you're trying to obtain 100% achievements - it can be quite the roller coaster. You play as a graffiti artists, but doing more objectives beyond just spraying art on walls. As an open-world, you have the freedom to do whatever quests you want, do as many activities as you want, and…

The sludge laps at every structure; corporate logos rot alongside the hand-scrawled tags of those who came before. In this landscape of deliberate toxicity the act of movement itself becomes the first assertion—that even a poisoned rock can still be traversed, still be claimed in small, irreverent strokes. The game does not offer escape; it offers only the…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →100% on Sludge Life on 4/1/2023. Was a fun little collect-athon game. Can't even get any achievements until you find the To-Do list in game. Worst achievement was eating the 20 slugs in a single play session. Definitely not worth the $15 price tag, but worth it for free like it was. First thing you should do if you play though is go in the setting and turn off all the screen effects.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →playing sludge life five years late feels like a personal crime, because it’s exactly my kind of fun. the first thing that hit me was movement. it’s fluid and instantly clicks, and the crunchy audio feedback makes everything feel tactile. jumping has weight. interacting with stuff gives you that satisfying confirmation sound. even tiny actions stick because the feedback is so consistent. once you start poking around, it’s obvious the world isn’t just set dressing. the humor is loud and stupid…

neutral · AI labelView post →I kinda like the premise, the style, the humor but that's about it. It's so short and such a non-rewarding senseless timewaster, it's just not worth the purchase. SLUDGE LIFE is so undercooked, that while having great ideas, the execution is so meager that you just want to finally finish the game, so you can uninstall it and never touch it again. The map is so small and the interactivity is so low, that there's just not much replayability or reason to come back to any of this. For the…

Then I kept playing despite my fever and inability to to understand what was going on. I don't even remember most of the game or differentiate between my fever dream or the actual gameplay. So yeah, it was fun. Would recommend. Recommended by: [url=https://store.steampowered.com/curator/38893669/]Experiences Worth Experiencing

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For starters, this is another case where a Neutral rating is needed because I neither recommend nor not recommend this game. Sludge Life is a game with incredible artistic vision and vibes; however, that might be the only thing that saves this game. When I first looked up this game, I expected something like Jazzpunk, a game that I absolutely loved due to its absurd humor that may not get a laugh but will definitely get a smile from you. Sludge Life tries to sell you its 'absurdity' and…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sludge Life is a very enjoyable 6/10 game that I managed to get quite into after the first 90 minutes. The artstyle is solid, very much continuing what they forged in their earlier game High Hell with gross and sexual elements that feel gritty and real within the cartoony style. Sludge Life, however, adds a lot of grime and applies a VHS and semi-swirly filter over the entire experience. There isn't much story aside from the fact that you are a spray paint "tagger" trying to gain street cred…

neutral · AI labelView post →There really isn't a whole lot to this game. It's definitely more "interesting" than "fun", don't let the other reviews deceive you. The game automates most things you do outside of some level of precision platforming, but other than that you will be autoclimbing, auto-gliding granted you hold down the jump button, etc. You really are here just to explore and as long as you dig oldschool cellshaded graphics then this is a game that'll keep you preoccupied for a few hours. And this is how it's…

positive · AI labelView post →Wow. Just wow. It should'nt be legal to make a game thats both affordable, big, and fun. Basically, you run around finding places to do graffiti on. Sounds boring, but they managed to make it hella fun. The characters are all extremely funny and the story is so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ good
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A bit too much sludge in my opinion. I thought I would love it, based on the screenshots (minus the dialogue seen in them), but the world isn't very structurally interesting and thus not too pleasant to explore. Also, pretty much all the humor just isn’t my kind of humor. Feels too childish/simple/soft. Beginner humor. Couldn’t get a chuckle out of me. It has a cool style, but most of it feels too grimy, musty, and like 110 degrees Fahrenheit. I feel like collectathons give a bit more dopamine…

Here are a few thoughts that crossed my mind over the first hour playing: - C is for cigarette, F is for fart. - I love approaching strangers to strike up conversations, in Sludge Life. - What's the point of tagging? positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It has great art and vibes, it's obviously made by some very talented people in that department. The problem for me is that... that's about it. The substance of the gameplay is as if someone has seen screenshots of Jazzpunk but no actual gameplay and said "Yea I can create that with my own artistic spin on it", obviously missing the point entirely as you would desperately need to actually play Jazzpunk to understand what type of game it is. Technically the game is clunky with poor controls.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Amazing exploration game. Sludge Life sells you on a basic idea... pure vandalism for the sake of it, existing just for the fun of it. Don’t expect deep narratives (there are narratives, though). The story is just like the atmosphere of the city, full of smog, pollution, and, most of all, people who have lost meaning and just trip on shrooms, tag anywhere they can, and accept the bleak and absurd nature of the SLUDGE produced by GLOP. Exploration and collection is the main gameplay. On that…
