What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 196 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mixed (190 of 296 positive).
Players praise the game for faithfully recreating the original roguelike in real-time 3D. [1][2][3] Some reviewers criticize the game for being released too early with bugs and design flaws. [4][5][6] Others note that the game retains the punishing difficulty and RNG of the original. [7][8][9]

How on earth this is out of early access? This game is literally in the development stage. There are loads of bugs, design flaws and mechanics that does not wok. I enjoyed my time with this game so far, but it was by assumption is was being IN DEVELOPMENT stage. At this point many flaws may be forgiven. But If they decided to release game now? This is just silly and e should let the developers know that. And just on …

WARNING: long post ahead I really wanted to recommend this game, but at its current stage, I cannot. While I enjoyed playing it and have reached the end of the campaign with multiple characters, I do have some major gripes with it that remain in my mind. Cons: Weapon Recoil In what seems like an odd design choice, your gun is not focused on your crosshairs at all times. With most guns, you have massive recoil after …

I love the original roguelike and it's exciting playing it in real-time and in 3D. Everything is instantly familiar like the sound of the mobs, the loot, the general feel of the environment, though it's a lot more atmospheric and creepy. I think some people have gone into this expecting a more traditional FPS experience when it's more of an RPG. This is not a purely action-driven game, it's about character building, …

Really fun game. Captures much of the same spirit of the 2D predecessor but expands out to moody 3D environments and enemies. Can be harsh, difficult and unforgiving of mistakes and mismanagement of resources but each journey is a lot of fun. Updated for Launch - Game has come a long way from early access and they've added loads of polish and stability as things have progressed to launch. Definitely a game I'm going …

At the time of writing this, I have completed Insane difficulty runs on all three base classes. This is a remake of Sword of the Stars: The Pit as an FPS Roguelike. Most of the aspects of the game are the same as in the original, with some notable exceptions that, for the time being, make the game less punishing. For right now, the game is even less punishing because the content is about equal to The Pit before any …

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So, not my first video game (I had a Sega Genesis when I was younger), but probably Exile: Escape from the Pit (1995), an old shareware RPG. It's still kind of the platonic ideal I have in my head of what an RPG is - a mix of worldbuilding, storytelling and character definition through builds.

It was popular and people actually waited for and loved to buy new DLC's for it. Then devs decided to make Kaiju game, which turned out to be an unbalanced buggy mess and devs stopped supporting it after few paid DLC's. Okay, bad things happen to everyone, maybe it's time to make something what people really wanted and asked them for? Like The Pit 2. Well, no. They decided to do a remake of…

It's a horrible janky broken mess with glitches galore, terrible enemy AI, unfair mechanics, and sometimes the game just doesn't work. Like, I have no idea why they thought that this game should be out of Early Access. It's dreadfully bad. But, it's fun.

neutral · AI labelView post →The Pit: Infinity as it was in Early Access was a promising game - but this has been fully released and there are several problems that really knock any wind out of any player who thought they might decently enjoy this. Playing the game, one will likely notice enemies will occasionally have pathing issues to the player - either taking bizarre routes to get to you or staying in once place because while they 'see' you, they have no idea how to get to you. You would think this would primarily be…

neutral · AI labelView post →It's the Pit! Again! But as a Realtime FPS! I mean, that pretty much sums it up right there. If you somehow missed The Pit, the game this is based on, it was a top-down classic roguelike - turn based, thoughtful, requiring good tactics to make any progress. Also, I was absolute garbage at it and have yet to beat it, apparently common among other players. I am happy to report that this game will indeed kill the hell out of you at a moment's notice, with remarkable enthusiasm, and now, because…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There's a reason why Bethesda stopped using stats to determine chance to hit in their action RPGs after Morrowind. That and the game is janky and ugly even without taking into consideration all the playability issues of trying to incorporate the original game's roguelike turnbased mechanics into a real time game.

neutral · AI labelView post →It could be a great game especially having the experience to learn and a whole forum to read from a previous game (SOTS The Pit, 2D grid-turn-based one) to see what is bad and what is good, but no, this is almost 1:1 game except being real-time with shooting, BUT didn't change the BAD design from the previous one that WON'T work with this one (some even nerf it) Also, this game design is entirely too much on RNG, in the worst way that makes you think if Kerberos even understands how to make…

Current Status: The game is enjoyable to play, if you liked the previous Swords of the Stars: The Pit which was top-down view and turn-based. neutral · AI labelView post →The Pit: Infinity is almost exactly what it claims to be, which is Sword of the Stars: The Pit, except as an FPS. Unfortunately, that means it has all of the exact same problems, on top of being a somewhat awkward Unreal Engine 4 FPS. If you're not familar with SotS: The Pit, it's a Rogue-like that is extremely true the genre's origins, which is to say that it's brutally unfair and you will usually lose through no fault of your own. The biggest problem with Infinity as far as I see (as a…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Take the very fun 2d roguelike Swords of the Stars: The Pit. Take almost all the mechanic and idea's from that game and slap it in a 3d engine. The end results should be enjoyable, right? Maybe at some point, if the devs are willing. The game is in a state that might work as a proof of concept. Animations range from actually pretty impressive to downright nausiating in jerkiness or just plain weird, like gently stroking terminals like it's your next lover to make them work. The enemies use the…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I will like this game when my first person movement actually has an animation instead of observing myself gliding about while looking down and when they fix overall movement sucking. Has to do with a weird locomotion system, holding W,A,S or D acts like it is starting a scripted animation at keyframe 1, along these keyframes of the animation your movement is carried, the moment you let go of the key there is no sense of friction or weight just an immediate sense the animation ceased abruptly,…

neutral · AI labelView post →This game has a lot of potential that looks as though it will never be realized. The objective was to remake the first Sword of The Stars: The Pit in a 3d environment with the ability to play it with friends. They seem to have barely gotten past the Alpha stage before slapping a 'done' sticker on it leaving the thing a buggy unbalanced jankfest and not that fun kind either. If you see this for 2 bucks and want to have a laugh with your friends at a chunk of unfinished game. Then by all…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This was a difficult decision. Unfortunately game is not yet as polished as previous, and some controls are still totally janky, like some enemy attack animations (Zuul pups, but also others), starting pistol also feels junky and is not as usable as pistol in SOTS. As game is realtime, it will be hard to implement magic/psionics. So if you were a fan of first SOTS, pick it up on sale. If you were not a fan, wait an expansion or two and check out much more polished game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Update on first impressions. ...I still like this game, but now I actually recommend it less. This is in part due to some really vexing programming choices. This game is still not finished yet they are selling paid DLC. Fine, it's not expensive and more characters are fun, but I'd rather the game actually get finished first! We have been promised a MOD system in the same vein as the original game in a future DLC, in fact the scanner item related to it still spawns. But, this item is useless…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was able to play this game on my old Surface Pro 2, very impressive for a new Unreal Engine based title! The biggest thing I liked about this game was the sense of suspense. You can always hear monsters around the corner but it's very rare that you get to know when they'll actually attack you. If you're lucky, you can chase down a Protean with your pistol, but occasionally you might get cornered by a zuul pup and a couple of other monsters (Which happened to me!). I haven't been able to…
