What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 103 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (99 of 117 positive).
Players widely praise it as a fun blend of Scrabble and Balatro. [1][2][3] Some reviewers complain about poor balance and a limited dictionary. [4][5][6] Several players note it works well on Steam Deck and is good for quick sessions. [7][8][9]

This is a time where I wish steam had a middle option between yes and no. The core gameplay and mechanics are great. This is easily the best scrabble meets balatro game out therem, and blends the two genres perfectly. If it was just this, this would be an easy recommendation, but it is everything around the game that prevents that. The balancing of the game is near nonexistent. There are many cards that are …

A really fun cross between Scrabble and Balatro but with lots of fresh ideas of it's own, The dev's have stated that no AI is in the final product and I have no reason to distrust them. Give the demo a go if you are unsure. I highly recommend it.

Yes, with caveats. The game is very fun. However, if you start pulling out semi-obscure words, like Hedonia, bailiff, etc. the game will not recognize it. I have lost at least a few runs to this. The mechanics are a blast though, its Balatro meets scrabble in a very pleasant way. Also you're allowed to use acronyms and proper names, but the acronyms and names allowed are also very random. Something as common as IBS …

My new go-to lunch time brain sharpener. A fun new twist on Scrabble for sure. Heaps of incredibly challenging stages to partake in which have really made me reconsider my worth. I've not felt as unintelligent when faced with a pile of letters in my life. The fact that this is Steam Deck verified and has brilliantly intuitive touchscreen controls means a quick pick-up-and-play is never unachievable. Simple to get …

Do you like Balatro? Do you like Scrabble more than Poker? This is for you.

83% of the 103 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Beyond Words. The complaint that keeps coming up: dictionary is limited, missing common words. Deal-breaker or nitpick?

positive · AI labelView post →Didn't take me long to realize how much I will fall in love with this game. From the wonderful opening theme song "the world needs more trumpets" to the responsive menus and solid tutorial this game is a gem. Both David and Steve are fantastic people who have put smiles on faces since the 90's with their works in the gaming industry. Proud to have at least one more chance to support them and thank them for another game that as a 41 year old will put yet another smile on my face.…

It can be surprisingly challenging later in runs and with the later levels in the campaign as they really crank up the difficulty. But I enjoyed building on the foundation I laid down in the earlier rounds, testing my brain to use the letters the best I could. You need to be fluent in English to enjoy this but strategy and luck will also play a huge factor in building your deck. It seems like they improved…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A rare gaming recommendation from me, but picked up a demo of Beyond Words on steam which is Balatro for Scrabble players. If you like Balatro and any kind of word game you will love it.

neutral · AI labelView post →From the legendary creators you'd expect to actually like video games, comes a rip off Scrabbalatro I don't even think they bothered to code properly. The balance of this game is nonexistent, which is wild because somehow you're supposed to beat a level with cards that don't even combat the brutal deficits and insane boss requirements this game suddenly foists on you. Unlocking more cards changes absolutely nothing, because most of them are just garbage fodder. Did anyone even play test this?…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wish I played more of the demo as while I really enjoyed the very early game, I'm starting to dislike it now after a few hours. Don't get me wrong, I love the Scrabble meets Balatro premise. But the game overall just isn't fun for me. It's mostly due to the vague UI and the (so far) fairly boring tiles and boosters. My biggest pet peve is how the game doesn't tell you the total word score (after multipliers etc) before you play it, especially because the way multipliers (and multipliers of…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Excellent game, as many others have said it's Scrabble Balatro and has all that entails. The fun for me is in playing the game more like scrabble as it has some issues when it comes to randomness nuking your runs. The randomness that nukes runs comes in the form of the boss modifiers, which frankly usually suck as they seem to destroy your build 99% of the time by disabling all your powerups either directly or specifying only certain lengths of words can be played (which usually renders your…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Almost great but it needs a balance patch or three. The scoring system is just plain broken.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There are very few games, even of those I enjoy, that I immediately think, "Wow, I need to go tell several friends about this because of how much they'll love it." This is one. Balatro, but scrabble, and superbly well executed. Also fantastic for couch co-op mode with a partner.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've been playing Beyond Words on Switch, which, to describe it in enticing but reductive terms, is Balatro meets Scrabble made by Goldeneye devs. It's great so far. My exact kind of game. store.steampowered.com/app/3823370/...
positive · AI labelView post →After playing Balatro for 300+ hours, I was wondering if anyone was going to do a similar game but with words. This is that game, and it ticks every box I could've hoped for. Fantastic game, developers did a great job, just buy it :-)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very enjoyable take on a popular family game! Once you get to understanding how the powerups and level layouts work you go from just looking for the easiest words to building and planning how to utilise multipliers to defeat "boss boards" which add an addictive difficulty layer by adding restrictions varying level to level! Plays great on Steam Deck too and an ideal jump in and out game when you want to test your brain for a while, but also enough layers for long gaming sessions!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Beyond Words - a relaxing and chilled out game that combines the structure of Balatro with Scrabble from @drdoak.bsky.social and Steve Ellis. I think it’s great.
positive · AI labelView post →This is a true cross between Scrabble and Balatro, a pure Balatro-like, being that it's exactly like both games... as opposed to something like a Gamblatro which has gambling/arcade machine type gameplay with some Balatro elements, or a game like Cursed Words which takes word games and has some Balatro like elements but just goes absolutely crazy with synergy elements and modifiers and uniqueness. If you want a word game that's unique and goes crazy to the point where you can win without even…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Maybe I'm just bad at the game, but I feel there aren't enough power card choices offered early enough and the boss scores needed are too high. Also, if you don't spec into bombs, your board is often too full to get good scores towards the end of the game when the challenges are hardest. I like the formula, just feel it needs some balancing.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →No one wants to play scrabble with me, this is the perfect substitute for those in the same position. Genuinely fun and difficult game
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sometimes you want a laidback game where you aren't spamming the dodge button, or looking at crazy particles flashing all over the screen. Sometimes you just want to sit back and challenge your brain, but not your eyes. Sometimes...you want a game like this to scratch that intellectual itch. This is like playing Balatro, but with the base game based on Scrabble. Just like with Balatro, initially you won't have enough of anything unlocked and you'll struggle, but as you continue to play the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really well-designed game. It's Balatrofied Scrabble, but with a bunch of puzzle stage layouts and twists to keep things fresh. Each stage is a uniquely-shaped board with a curated set of tiles and rules. Rules can be things like "the board is cleared after every play" or having a timer tick down while you decide your play, and can also include perks or power cards that are in play from the start. I think there might be some stages that reduce the breadth of possible items in the shop, but I…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A great blend of Scrabble and Balatro. It's been great on the Steam Deck too as a quick game to pick up and play. I liked the tactical element that the longest word might not always be the highest scoring with your powerups. My son also enjoyed helping over my shoulder to find words to spell and seeing the points go up. Would highly reccommend!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The guys known for consuming your entire childhood with games like Goldeneye and Perfect Dark are back to consume your entire adulthood with Scrabbalatro... sorry, Beyond Words. This game is so dangerous it should have a surgeon general's warning. I've played virtually all of the roguelike deckbuilders out there, and while there are several gems, none have really enraptured me in the same way as Slay the Spire or Balatro. I played the demo for this game for at least 5 hours, which by the way,…

neutral · AI labelView post →This game could have been great - Balatro combined with Scrabble. As a fan of both games and someone who is quite good at both games, I thought Beyond Words would be well worth a purchase. Instead playing it has been pure frustration. Here are the positives: + Reasonable amount of content for the modest asking price + The board design, each of which is unique, is a very good feature. In fact it is the only thing that motivated me to continue playing the game Here are the negatives: - Terrible…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Firstly.. marketing this - a WORD GAME - as "from the legendry creators of Goldeneye and Timesplitters" is like saying... "From Quentin Tarantino - director of Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs, comes this fantastic collection of cross-stitch patterns for your Grandmother to knit".. so they can F**k right off with that nonsense. Secondly.. I just want to play a word game.. I don't want to be blocked by some ridiculous random thing where none of my letters score anything, making the stage / boss…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a very fun game. It's also a game that REALLY needs a bigger dictionary than it has. Sometimes it doesn't recognize some pretty basic things, let alone obscure things. It also lacks many oriental words that are fairly widely recognized in English (many of which are common enough to be in major dictionaries). This leads to it feeling somewhat random what you can and cannot score with, because it has a mix of bizarrely obscure words that I only find by putting random letters in place…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've played a whole bunch of games with a premise similar to this one (i.e., "What if Balatro but with Scrabble?") and this one is my favorite. I like that you get a different board with each challenge; it adds more depth to the game, because now you aren't just figuring out which cards have synergies and plowing your way through by exploiting those combos; you are also learning how to play each new board to your best advantage. It's also got a pleasant, colorful interface and smooth, ambient…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Has a very fun design but the RNG is just deflating. There's no way to prepare for the boss levels that have random abilities such as "You randomly will not be able to use 3 powers but still have to gain an absurd amount of points". My first run ended because it didn't score anything over 2 letters and have to gain 1.5 million .
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As much as it looks like a game for my mother, it does indeed have that Balatro juice. First evening I played it, I couldn’t imagine how I’d ever get near the final rounds, let alone beat the target scores. By the third evening I’m scoring 400,000,000 points for a 3 letter word, (‘arr’ in case you’re interested. Yes it’s a real word. Where would pirates be without it?) Some victory conditions can be harsh, but I wouldn’t change it. It makes the runs where everything comes together all the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's definitely a good concept and makes for some engaging gameplay, but could be executed better. Initially I liked the game but the more I played it the less I like it. I'm not sure if I'll play it much if at all after this, that said I've done about 10 hours so far so it's at least recommendable from that point. It's not always clear to me what effect the cards and stuff have on the score, even though there are clear efforts to show this in the game. There's also way too many different…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Balatro but scrabble with a lot of replayability, a very easy way to pass time between tasks.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you want hours to disintegrate without you realizing it. A game that mixes the fun of Scrabble with the randomness of rogue lites. Then look no further than Beyond Words. Just had 6 hours gone in seconds due to this addictive game. It's on sale on Steam currently and I highly recommend it
positive · AI labelView post →Real decent scrabble roguelike. I like the different shaped boards and the amount of cards/boosters to play around with even if some of the cards are so clearly overpowered. My main gripe is that the tutorial is a bit too broad and I would like it to go into more specifics (colored tiles, how each board can give you different letter tiles, etc), and also I would love for there to be a way to hover over a word to get a dictionary definition so I can understand how the game clocks certain…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I usually do more hours into a game before I give an opinion and I may edit this review later, but for me this is a solid recommend. I wanted to help promote this game as it is still early and still getting patches and updates which is AWESOME and I want to encourage that. I was never a fan of roguelites until I played Balatro. It had a very satisfying ramp in difficulty and unlocks that made it a fun romp. Many games have tried to duplicate that fun and unfortunately failed, including a ton…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game rules. Gives off early/mid 2000's PopCap game vibes, but Beyond Words requires more strategic thought than most PopCap games did (no shade on PopCap, the Peggles are all-timers). Beyond Words feels like what every previous attempt by other devs to combine Balatro style gameplay with a Scrabble-esque game has been trying to do, but this time it's been done right. As far as the AI art stuff goes-- look, I hate AI stuff. It's soulless, takes work from artists, and is stupidly wasteful…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Scrabble that allows the use of things Scrabble wouldn't (like Names, Initialisms, abbreviations, etc) great game. Worth every penny
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Alright people, we found it, this is a better version of Balatro - with more bonuses, cards, tile interactions and much more levels. My first few runs were devastating, since i played it like an average 'words game', then changed behavior and acted like this is Balatro and started winning. The difficulty is high straight after tutorial, so you might wanna learn to play Balatro on Golden Stake first, cus you absolutely need all knowledge from it to use here. There are tons of unlocks and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bit of a learning curve but it's an addictive scrabble x balatro type game that can quickly consume more time than you were intending. It's also a great game for those who aren't true games and only have small time increments and don't have time to learn and remember dozens of controls or combos
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I hate this game (in a really positive way). is exactly as addictive as I hoped, RNG is a bit iffy but I'm still learning the game properly.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A cross between scrabble and balatro, enjoying it! Plays nicely on steamdeck but no ultra wide support on desktop
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Super addicting, relaxing and cozy. Mix of balatro and Scramble. Was gonna pass up on it since Cursed Words was already fun to play but I'm glad I bought this one, too. Can get pretty challenging, too. Different boards/layouts and boss challenges and there's a lot of synergy with powerups. :)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm loving Beyond Words so far, but I wish it had literally any aesthetic other than "mid-00s Facebook game".
neutral · AI labelView post →I love the feel of this game, Scrabble, Balatro and Slingo. The mood, Music and font choices are old school game nighty and I like the various ideas this game has. I can see myself spending a lot of time in this. It's fun and makes you think, We need more word games and this has a brilliant idea for it. Try the demo and see if it's for you!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Couldn't stop playing this during NextFest. They definitely delivered on the Scrabblatro promise with a lot of polish. I'm going to dump a few dozen hours into this in the next few weeks. A compelling gameplay loop, solid sound design, clean graphics = happy customer.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun game if you like scrabble, im sure you'll like this game
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An excellent translation of Balatro’s loop into the Scrabble-like genre, with its own visual style and tactical specificities. If you’re more into vocabulary than poker but still itching for Balatro’s distinctive blend of chill gameplay and exhilarating score-racking, this is one of the best alternatives out there.
