Players praise the remaster for preserving the original's soul while modernizing graphics and controls. [1][2][3] Some reviewers find the level design frustratingly labyrinthine and dated. [1][4][5] Several players consider the price too high for what is offered. [6][7][8][9]

A decent remaster... but why would I recommend a 30 year old game that looks slightly better for 40 dollars when the original is WAY cheaper, and can be played on a source port that essentially plays the same as this? Only difference is achievements, and I feel anymore that only a small margin of people actually care about that anymore. Edit: The original version of the game is now delisted 🤡. If you STILL want to …

Star Wars: Dark Forces is one of the most significant titles in the Star Wars franchise, largely because it was among the first to deliver a truly original narrative. It expands the lore surrounding the original trilogy in meaningful ways—showing us the theft of the Death Star plans and offering a bit more background on the Rebel agent Madine, who only had a fleeting appearance in Episode VI. Dark Forces arguably …

Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster is a great example of how to bring a classic into the modern era without losing what made it special. Nightdive kept the soul of the original intact, from what I can tell from old gameplay videos I watched, while modernizing the game and make it run flawlessly on new hardware and giving it great controls. While the gameplay is absolutely amazing the level design shows its age. Most …

Good game, and okay remaster! Just not sure if it’s worth the full price without the sale. I started and stopped the original version multiple times, I think I got as far as finishing Nar Shadaa? Thanks to the remaster I was finally able to see the game through to the end. Initially I was really skeptical on the visuals, and while I don’t think the redone visuals match the charm of the original pixels… in gameplay …

Pretty much what a remaster should be. If you play it on HD mode you wouldn't even realize it was remastered since the new graphics maintain the spirit of the original. Only when you switch to "software mode" do you realize how bad the original game looked compared to the remaster. As for the game, it's awesome. It's quite a challenge and one of the cool features of the the game was that in an era where many of …

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The original AND CHEAPER Dark Forces is still up on Steam (for now), so do yourself a favor and go with that one instead. Asking $30 for such a barebones remaster should be illegal. Some "notable features" include a fully 3d renderer (which is the most important feature and has already been done by FREE community source-ports), updated sprites and textures, AI upscaled cutscenes (which look muddy and remove the charm of the original cutscenes), and a "vault" which includes a look into the…

neutral · AI labelView post →- 16 April 2026 Scumbag Disney has delisted the original game to help drive sales of this remaster. As someone who played the remaster, I can confirm they are 100% only doing this to drive sales of the remaster. The remaster doesn't offer anything of value above updated sprites, and the price difference didn't make sense. So, for anyone who just wanted to experience the game, the classic version was perfect and cost much less. Now, instead, you need to pay Disney extra for what seems to be a…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In general, this is an exquisite remaster of a 30-year old classic. Loaded with razor-sharp controls, QoL updates, crisp graphics switchable on-the-fly to original legofest and dynamic music faithful to the original with both FM synth and General MIDI, the execution doesn't leave anything to be desired if you want to re-experience an old classic. After completing the entire game in five hours on medium difficulty with my last completion being on original version in late 90's and subsequently…

neutral · AI labelView post →Okay, I really don't like being hard on devs, and as far as a remaster goes, this is all you really need. It has some accessibility features like disabling the headbob, but there is no FoV slider... however I wasn't getting nauseous playing. The thing is, this is some of the worst level design I have ever seen. I remember playing this game around when it was new and not really liking it nearly as much as Doom, Duke Nukem 3D or Shadow Warrior. It seems like it was 100% riding on the Star Wars…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An elegant game, from a more civilized time! A game I played in my childhood, and one of the few pure shooters that has won my liking (they usually aren't my cup of tea), althrough it should also be said that among the Dark Forces games, this is probably my least favorite one, but that's because you get to be a Jedi and play around with not just a variety of weapons but also force powers in the other ones - and precisely because of that I can't count those as pure 'shooters' either... Anyway,…

neutral · AI labelView post →The word "Remaster" is a tad strong for a release that used Artificial Intelligence to work on the cutscenes. Nevermind the fact that what was used does not at all take into account the way cutscenes were animated, or the re-use of colours for different things due to the limited colour palette, specially on the characters' faces, making it look like they're covered in mud and that their teeth are not solid and blend into their mouths. As for everything else in the 2D segments of the cutscenes,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Star Wars BOOMER SHOOTER Seriously though, this game is insanely good. Ahead of its time and that's an understatement. While DOOM will always be the crowned jewel when it comes to this genre, the level design in this game alone is unmatched compared to it's contemporaries. It's crazy to think this game came out in '95. I have fond memories of playing the PS1 version, and replaying it as an adult was satisfying in a way words can't express. It felt like experiencing it for the first time again…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It runs well and plays well, the only complaint I have is that one of the last levels in the game has a known bug that prevents you from activating the switches needed to continue, forcing you to restart. With how short the game is and how much more they're charging for the remaster I would've hoped stuff like that would be fixed.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I sometimes forget my kids at school but I somehow remembered the Aurebesh door code on Mission 1 from 30 years ago. If you played this game as much as I did back then, this remaster will hit the spot.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Now I remember how much pain I was in the first time around and why I never finished it. Adding quicksaves would greatly enhance the playability of the game. I'm not going to "get gud" I'm in my 40's now and just don't want a repeating slog anymore

neutral · AI labelView post →This is a pretty fun and solid 90s fps that has good star wars feel in it. Level design can be annoying at times and couple of levels have a lot of cheap traps. Also not being able to save during mission is annoying. But overall this remastered version plays and runs well so it's worth checking out if you like 90s fps or star wars games.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good Remaster but wait for sale (I think I spent probably 5 to 10 dollars for the original if I'm not mistaken), not to give it any complaints though (don't look up at the sky and look around around in a circle, shi will make you sick) just I feel it's just Dark Forces 1 but re-textured, ability to look up and down, supports native resolution and added with the ability to switch between the OG to the new, I already have Dark Forces 1 so I'm a bit salty I didn't get a free version of the…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →28,99€ Price tag for a remaster of a 30 year old game is a bit ridiculous. Has some of the most boring and mundane levels i have ever seen in a boomer shooter lacking visual clarity and pacing. The fact that the game uses lives instead of standard ol' true and tested saving is what ultimately makes this a negative review when it would have otherwise been good enough to barely get a positive. Apart from the above mentioned it's a DOOM re-skin essentially and a decent one at that but has some…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of my favourite Star Wars games, and one of my favourite Doom clones, Star Wars: Dark Forces is a wonderful experience for any fan of the Star Wars franchise. Play as Kyle Katarn, a mercenary for hire after defecting from the Empire, sent to steal the Death Star plans for the Rebellion, then to investigate the Dark Trooper Project that the Empire is running. Blast your way across fourteen levels ranging from Imperial facilities, starships, prisons, and even a visit to Nar Shadda in your…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was on the fence whether I want to recommend Dark Forces or not, but ultimately, due to a combination of design decisions and newly introduced bugs, I have to say no. (The ultimate reason for "Not Recommended" is described in the penultimate paragraph. If you're having trouble reading that far, that's on you.) The game feels like the missing cousin between the original Doom and the Build Engine endeavours, most notably Duke 3D. It plays fairly ok, the movement mechanics are swift and mostly…

neutral · AI labelView post →I never played the original Dark Forces, so I came into this remaster with a fresh perspective. I was expecting a straightforward Doom clone, but DF is anything but. For one thing it doesn't even use the Doom engine. Instead, it runs on its own engine, one that feels closer to Build engine used in Duke Nukem 3D. You can freely look up and down, jump, and crouch, while the level geometry is far more varied than I expected. What surprised me the most is just how ambitious the game is. It's…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is an awesome Boomer Shooter to play set in the awesome Star Wars expanded universe. The game runs great, looks great and has been a blast to play apart from 1 part of 1 level. Jabba's Ship, the one level I have up until now not completed on hard difficulty. The majority of the level is actually fine, quite a lot of mines about though, but fine. The first part however is the worst part of the game. On medium difficulty you first have to kill 1 Kell Dragon with your bare hands. You can…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →9/10 It's a great remaster and doesn't change anything about the original other than you have the ability to freely look up with the mouse as well as enjoy much clearer character models and set pieces in higher resolution. $30 is a bit to ask for but I'd say its worth it to support the creators and them bringing this ancient masterpiece back into the public eye, but if you want to get it on sale its up to you, it's well worth it either way. If you've already played the original Dark…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you can dig crusty old games this is a quality FPS from that neat phase in between Doom 2 and Quake. When other companies were doing interesting things with 2D First Person design. Great remaster as usual. I was big fan of this game as a kid even though I sucked at it. First time I actually beat it now.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fantastic remaster worthy of a playthrough At first when I got Star Wars Dark Forces remaster I didn't really think much of it. It was included in a bundle and I thought I was never going to play it. Well after thinking more about the game, nostalgia got the best of me. I don't usually have much desire to play retro games. After playing a couple missions I was hooked and had to finish the entire game. Not much has changed from what I can tell or remember for that matter. It's been over 25…

neutral · AI labelView post →What starts out as a pretty fun classic DOOM clone quickly becomes derivative, boring mazes with the same enemy types peppered throughout and a cumbersome design philosophy even for its time. This game is so over-glazed, put on the same pedestal with the excellent KotoRs 1&2 but this just doesn't earn that. Maybe it was a "you just had to be there" game but the game just keeps going, and going, on and on, with the same box of tricks and the same enemies and a pretty barebones story even for…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So: Pros and cons of this game! First: this is essentially Star Wars Doom. One problem with that is of course that basically every enemy attack is instantaneous; way harder to dodge than demon fireballs or whatever. That said, you get shields and extra lives and checkpoints, so this doesn't make it excessively difficult. Which brings me to cons - the level design. A lot more thought went into the secrets in Doom. "Press this odd looking wall and receive goodies." Whereas the Dark Forces…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a great remaster of an average game, some of the level designs are *real* stinkers but it still scratches that itch of shooting stormtroopers for a couple hours. Nightdive is way more qualified to remaster these old Star Wars games than Aspyr I'll say that.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Get it on a sale or just get the original, which still is available on Steam and install some graphicsl community mods - Don't get me wrong, it's a good Star Wars themed Boomer Shooter, but it's way too short; I completed the game on Hard difficulty within 5 hours. I did play the original game only until mission 5 or 6, so plenty of the game was still unknown. The game's graphics and cutscenes have been pushed up a bit with the ability to use the old rendering. Running perfectly on Linux via…

Each mission really makes you feel immersed in the Star Wars universe, with memorable locations, familiar enemies and the chance to step into the role of Kyle Katarn. Some of the stages can feel a little drawn out at times, and there are moments where the game's age really shows, especially when it comes to platforming. It definitely has it's flaws, but it's a really enjoyable…

The levels are absolutely massive, with zero waypoints and zero hand-holding, so it's just you, the map and your gut. Fights are no joke, ammo is scarce and your HP is always hanging by a thread. That said, the missions are well put together, and the story and cutscenes keep you hooked all the way through. Nightdive gave it a legit glow-up on their KEX engine, with up to 4K at 120 FPS and proper gamepad…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →On a technical level I think Nightdive did a great job with the remaster. The music is fantastic. As for the game itself, the levels can be confusing to navigate. Some areas can be pretty dark, although you do have a headlamp. This can add additional confusion to navigating a level but it is cool when you suddenly see shadowy figured emerging from the darkness before lasers start flying everywhere. The pros aren't enough to overcome the poor level design though.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Doom but Star Wars. Levels are pretty lengthy with no saves, which can be frustrating sometimes. Runs great on Steam Deck.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Never played the original, but the remaster was good, I was finally able to experience how the Death Star plans were stolen in The EU/Legends, as well as Kyle Katarn's beginning before he became a Jedi was good. If you like the EU/Legends definitely pick this game up and I hope the rest of the games with Katarn in also get remastered.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Works very well on Steam Deck. This version is ideal to (re)experience Dark Forces. I own the original (Steam), but felt it was (graphically) unbearable. The game is a bit repetitive, it was fairly enjoyable, when played in small portions. The level design and gameplay mechanics basically boil down to "open map/kill enemies/go where you haven't been yet". I grew up on Dark Forces 2 and I could see which game template it kept improving on. Would I buy it for 29? Definitely not. One…
