What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 187 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (330 of 427 positive).
Many players praise the game for its nostalgic value and fun co-op gameplay. [1][2][3] Some reviewers criticize the port for bugs, input lag, and being a lazy cash grab. [4][5][6] Several players note it is a port of the Dreamcast version, not the PS1 original. [7][8][9]

My respect to developers for doing absolutely nothing on this re...collection of money for old game. It takes skill and experience to bring the playstation game to a state worse than it originally was. In essense: no old bugs were fixed, new bugs introduced, "new graphics" are just better resolution textures on poligons, combos are even harder to perform than on PS1.

Dude, I loved this game back on PS1, even though this is a upscale port of a different version, it's still extremely fun. I will kidnap my friends and force them to relive my childhood memories with me

Another banger from Aspyr. If you have fond memories playing this on PS1 or Dreamcast, I can definitly recommend this. Plays great in Co-op.

I bought it to play with my kid and I ended up loving it more than him. A very fun 2 play couch coop game.

Overview Jedi Power Battles is a port of the Dreamcast version of the original game from the early 00's. It's not so much as a remaster (and more like a re-release), since the game is almost completely unchanged from its initial release, bar things like high resolution and widescreen support and some unlocked characters. All the frustration, bugs and jank of the original are still here - for better or worse. …

I never played the Dreamcast version of this game, so I can only assume the multitude of glitches and bugs present here originated there and were faithfully replicated to ensure the same nostalgic feel. However, those bugs weren't present in the PS1 version. It baffles me that Aspyr chose the glitchier version simply because it ran on…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I honestly don't know why we let Aspyr keep getting away with these lazy ports. The patches have made the game more playable in recent months, but on launch it was a buggy mess. I'm not saying the original versions on Dreamcast and PS1 didn't have their issues, but it feels like this was a cheap AI upscale with zero playtesting done. The most heinous offenders being the vehicle levels and the post game content. I don't think this is worth the $12 or so I paid for it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ok so at its core this game has always been pretty bad, but it's okay for a few hours of couch co-op I guess. This is a port of the Dreamcast version (not PS1) so no destructable environments and less colorful lighting. Game is still super jank and filled with bugs. Combo inputs make you feel like you are lagging irl and you spend 50% of combat getting stunlocked by random stuff. Skill issue? Absolutely! Still feels awful tho. Oh btw this is an Aspyr port so of course there are consistent…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am glad there is an interest in re-making classic Lucas Arts games, however, if you were hoping for a re-make; then this one misses the mark. I would call this a re-imagining. The graphics are very nicely cleaned up for current gen displays, and it is nice to have network multi-player; but the levels are changed (I think to make the platforming easier) and there is lost functionality of the environment (i.e. no more destroying trade federation consoles for points). If you knew all the…

neutral · AI labelView post →Nostalgia can only carry you so far, and in the case of this game it really isn't enough. I played the original back on PS1 but never played the DreamCast version, so I don't know how many of the bugs are from being a port of that version or new to the PC port in general. I know the PS1 version had its share of frustrations, but I don't remember it being this bad. Just a few examples I've run into so far: 1. Randomly falling through the floor during a boss fight and dying, 2. Having the NPC…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I remember playing this banger of a game in early 2000's on my Sega Dreamcast. Nevertheless, this port is unresponsive, poorly made and DEFINITELY not worth this type of money. If you find playing old games enjoyable, I would strongly recommend emulating this one on Sega Dreamcast, as this version was supreme to the said console's technical properties. What a shame Aspyr hit us with a lazy cash grab. 20-25$ for a poorly implemented port after 20 years? Licorice levels of bad aftertaste. DO…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →STAR WARS™: Episode I: Jedi Power Battles™ is a quietly refreshing reimagining of a familiar adventure we played on Dreamcasts in the 2000s. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kc5o-ofZlGY It's still all about side-scrolling, lightsaber-wielding action as you battle through ten distinct levels, from the battlefields of the Trade Federation to Theed's royal palace, all wrapped in nostalgic Phantom Menace flair. This new version feels thoughtful rather than flashy. You can now change your…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Used to play this a lot as a kid and now I know why I never beat it. The mechanics of this game are epic on paper, but unfortunately the implementation ruins it completely. Combat is kinda like playing a fighting game (or maybe a soulslike). Your strike and block buttons both have startup and recovery frames, so if you keep spamming the "heavy" attack, enemies will hit you before your strike lands. Blocking also has a trick to it. You need to block right before a laser hits you to…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What would be a fun experience is seriously held back by severe game breaking bugs. In my 4 hours of play i had the Coruscant level crash whenever 2 players used a force ability at the same time. Also defeating Maul plays his death animation and then the game softlocks for me, making it effectively unbeatable.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Good: - Sweet sweet nostalgia hit - Star Wars music - Adjusted control scheme is good - Some new playable characters and lightsaber colour toggle The Bad: - Pretty much everything is unlocked from the get go; all you really have to do is level your saber characters, unlock ultimate saber and new game+ - Stunlocks galore - Most boss strategies tend to lean towards cheesing a certain combo (especially Maul) - Some of the platforming is a bit tedious - Expensive for what it is The Ugly: -…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →STAR WARS: Episode I: Jedi Power Battles is a remake of the original that released a quarter of a century ago in April/May 2000 (scary isn’t it?). The remake is a bit of a mixed bag, a lot of positives but also some negatives, like input lag, that could need some patching. Story The game loosely follows the events of Episode 1, but don’t expect to much story, Jedi Power Battles is more of a beat em’ up than a Story game that goes along with the movie. Gameplay Each level mostly…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Zero point in this "remaster", as EVERYTHING is unlocked at the moment you press Start. No sense of accomplishment, all Secrets are available from the start. BORING. Graphically unchanged, and just as clunky as when on Dreamcast. Snorefest of a Star Wars game. Best experienced with a friend.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a platformer arcade beat-em-up from 25 years ago, now with ultrawide support and Remote Play Together. For reference, it came out the same year as Deus Ex. By that standard it's impressive on a technical level. Controls are a bit clunky, it's not exactly God of War (five years later). I hear some of the levels may be broken based on other reviews. I would get it on sale only, and only then if you are nostalgia-poisoned or have a pathological need to play every Star Wars game. I'm…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I absolutely loved this game back on ps1. It just felt perfect, unique characters (some you had to unlock), upgrading health, force, combos, the positives just kept coming. It tickled something in my brain that few games have since. Unfortunately this remake didn't quite hit the mark. A rerelease would've been cool- just upgrade the graphics and call it a day. No such luck, it's buggy (some levels can't even be completed, for who knows what reason). Plain and simple, what works is really fun,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've mentioned Jedi Power Battles probably hundreds of times to my friends over the last 20 years. It was the first Star Wars game and first PS1 game I think I ever played. It was one of my all time favorites growing up. I was super stoked to see it get a re-release with bonus content.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →You get a recommend out of pure nostalgia, but this is the Dreamcast version, and I would say it is barely a remaster over that. Wait for it to be on a very VERY good sale.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A nostalgic trip but filled with some PTSD. I grew up with the PS1 version so this is already an upgrade for me. Until recently I didn't even know that a dreamcast port existed. Not sure if that port had all those extras but for me it was a happy addition. For those who had only the PS1 version this is definitely glow up. That includes some new enemies throughout the levels and overall a much more smoothness to the game. NEVERTHELESS The definition of "remaster" is somewhat transparent as a…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of those games I could never beat on the PS1. Either I'm better than my 10yo self (Ha in your face!) or the game got easier. + Great Nostalgia + Simple yet fun - Minor bugs (getting blown off the map without dying, which is worse as you can't respawn at checkpoint). - I'm pretty sure I could demolish half the map in the PS1 version. That's not possible anymore.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →STAR WARS™: Episode I: Jedi Power Battles™ is a remaster of the original PlayStation 1 game that was released back in early 2000. Now featuring modernized controls, the game is a bit less frustrating than it was back then thanks to its quality-of-life improvements. A great co-op game for two players. I was never able to get past Stage 4 back in the day, so it's time to see if my skills have improved!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Star Wars: Episode I – Jedi Power Battles (Steam/Dreamcast Port) — 0/5 Jedi Power Battles had one job: capitalize on Episode I's theatrical release with a competent action game. It failed in 1999 and the Steam re-release manages to fail harder. The combat is clunky to its core — defending carries recovery frames that punish engagement in ways that feel less like intentional design and more like unfixed bugs, and lightsaber combat never graduates beyond button mashing with occasional collision…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Improved graphics with the jank still intact. In fact, they even added more jank to make the game more challenging.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The jank and AI in this outdated game is hilariously bad, even when playing with a friend. The first hour, you think you're having a good time playing this retro Star Wars game, but overtime the jank starts to get under your skin. You grow frustrated, annoyed even. The controls, the camera, questionable hit boxes, quest objectives, everything is an enemy. The battle droids are somehow doing Tekken combos on you, or uppercuts you like its Mortal Kombat. Padme, as an escort mission, likes to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Lmao, I forgot how much this game completely sucks @$$. But the anger that floods in as you suffer is soooooo nostalgic PS I saw someone mention that this is a port of the Dreamcast version, not PS1, which explains why you can't destroy computer terminals anymore. LAME!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I know this may sound like an odd reason to refund and leave a negative review, but it’s the truth. On the main menu there is a “Register your game” option designed just like the “New Game” or “Continue” options. I buy these kind of remakes for nostalgia, and when a company puts a blatant marketing move right in front of my nostalgia it just kills the magic. I know it’s small complaint and I assume most people may not be too bothered by it. But for me it just killed the experience. I buy…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Simple, Old school saber fun. Too bad they didn't make it so we could do co-op online. That would have made this perfect. IMO
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My first exposure to Jedi Power Battles was on the PS1, playing couch co-op with my older brother. I remember the platforming being tough and Darth Maul giving us real trouble. That boss fight felt straight-up soulslike back then. Jumping into the Steam remaster, the first thing I noticed was that I couldn’t destroy the panels in the first level like I used to. That threw me off for a second. But otherwise? The game runs perfectly on the Steam Deck. Surprisingly, the platforming wasn’t nearly…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you don't have nostalgia for this, I don't think it's worth putting up with its clunky camera and controls (which you can't even rebind - why?) for just a retelling of TPM
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I haven’t played the original game from 2000, so this was my first experience with it. But I really enjoyed it. The game is fairly simple, but I love the fact that old games are getting remasters. I’d love to see similar remasters for the rest of the Star Wars series — or at least some updates like widescreen support, achievements, and a slight graphics upgrade. Overall, I’m satisfied. Getting 100% achievements is quite easy, which is definitely a plus. Pleasantly surprised.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly I'm a disapointed by this game. It's a blast from the past, for sure, but since launch there's been gamebreaking bugs that just crash the game, and no sign of any fixes or even addressing the issue as a whole. If you're gonna do another cashgrab remake of an old game, at least have the decency to make it not break? Or fix it when it does? So yeah, You reading this, don't buy this game. It's not worth your money, sadly, because it just simplyy doesn't run
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It is basically a lazy port, but I actually prefer to play this version over the PS1 rom with the added/consolidated content. It works well with a controller and hasn't been ""optimized"", which I am happy to see. Also, Darth Maul can go straight to hell where he belongs
