STAR WARS™: TIE Fighter Special Edition
Developer Totally Games
Star Wars: TIE Fighter is a space combat simulator published in 1994 for MS-DOS and Classic Mac OS as the follow-up to Star Wars: X-Wing. It places the player in the role of an Imperial starfighter pilot during events that occur between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. The game was produced by Lawrence Holland and Edward Kilham's Totally Games studio. Based on X-Wing's game engine, TIE Fighter… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 186 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (521 of 644 positive).
A few players report technical issues, especially on Windows 10 and 11. [1][2][3]

Absolutely could not get it to work on Windows 11 or linux. Special Edition, Classic, I even wasted 2 hours trying to download the Total Conversion mod until I realized none of the bindings would save. Within 5 seconds of rebinding, the game would forget them again. And in the regular Tie Fighter editions themselves, neither my mouse nor my flight stick were recognized. Unfortunate to say, but do not buy.

Literally one of the best or even possibly the best STAR WARS game ever made. Period.

Classic of the genre. Today, with X-Wing ported to the Tie Fighter engine, the differences between the games are less obvious, but at the time of Tie's release, it was a big step forward. The graphics were improved, many ships were added, missions became more interesting (although some remained just as nerve-wracking). And, of course, the biggest change: you now play as the good guys instead of separatists. Plays …

TIE Fighter stands alone as a masterclass in military simulation and disciplined storytelling. It doesn't ask you to save the galaxy with magic; it asks you to maintain order through superior tactics and unwavering efficiency. As a fan of deep, character-driven narratives, I find the perspective here refreshing—you are a professional officer in a high-functioning war machine. The gameplay is the absolute peak of the …

This is by far one of the best Star Wars games ever made and it still holds up pretty well for a PC game from over thirty years ago. The storyline is very immersive and convinces you the Empire are the good guys and the space combat is top notch. I highly recommend using an old school flight joystick for authenticity and easier play. We didn't have Xbox controllers in 1994.

81% of the 186 Steam reviewers we collected recommend STAR WARS™: TIE Fighter Special Edition. The complaint that keeps coming up: does not work on Windows 11 for some players. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Gamebytes Magazine gave the original release its "very highest recommendation", citing numerous improvements over X-Wing. The reviewer called the graphics "astonishing" and noted improved artificial intelligence and in-flight information systems. The review's "single complaint" was the lackluster ending. Edge praised many of the graphic and gameplay enhancements and new features over X-Wing, but described the missions as repetitive and complained the game loses appeal when the player isn't fighting for the underdog Rebellion. GameSpot's review of the Collector's CD-ROM Edition called TIE Fighter "the best space combat game ever made" and praised the updated graphics. James V. Trunzo…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game! It was one of my first games where I would play as the bad guys - it was confusing for me as a kid, but once I started to play it, I enjoyed every minute of it. At the time it felt very realistic. Not easy, but not too difficult. It was very satisfying to successfully complete a mission! https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3052646630 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3053428552

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not a fan of the Star Wars films or universe but the franchise did spawn some brilliant games, this being one of the best of them and remains to this day one of the greatest space combat sims out there. Has deep mechanics, varied missions and while the presentation may seem dated, everything is very clear and you can tell exactly what's going on. Highly recommend using a joystick or at least a gamepad tho, KB+M controls like ass.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Star Wars: Tie Fighter is a game I had to buy three times. After the steam version didn't agree with my controls method, I ended up buying the GoG version and using that instead, the CD-ROM version wouldn't even install. Could have used that money to put the soles on the bottom of my shoes. Now I just have pretend Shoes. Tie-Fighter is the second game in Lucas Arts' Starfighter series. You play as a pilot for the Galactic Empire, the at-the-time super power of the galaxy who are either the…

Getting the game to work properly was a hassle (follow some guides to make it easier), but I'm still impressed by how well this game has aged. Seriously, this must have been impressive back in 1994.

neutral · AI labelView post →Once considered the greatest Star Wars game of all-time. Possibly still is. Looks amazing with easy-to-find 3D hardware wrapper DLLs, and plays like butter, at any resolution. Looks, and plays, good in OG software mode as well, frankly -- although it seems more stable in hardware 3D mode with the wrapper DLLs. The game is hard. Tie Fighters are flimsy, and dying means starting over the entire campaign. Not joking -- hardcore mode is the only option, because Tie Fighter pilots are just…

positive · AI labelView post →One of the greatest PC games of all time. You are the EMPIRE... tasked to keep peace between waring species. The game came out when Bubba was trying to distract the nation from a certain intern and got the USA involved in some 'peace keeping' actions. A wonderful reflection on current times and a big part of my youth. I come back and replay the game in its entirety once every year or two. This and X-Wing Alliance are masterpieces.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The first time I played SW: TIE Fighter was when it was released in 1994. By then I was already a hardened veteran of SW: X-Wing and Wing Commander I and II. X-Wing and Wing Commander shall always be defining moments in the history of space flight simulators. But TIE Fighter was a noted improvement over anything I had played before. It defied my expectations and became one of my favourite space-based shoot-em-ups of all time. For better or worse, I obsessed over this game in my teenage…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The first Star Wars game that completely focused on letting you play as the good guys. Still so much fun to crush Rebel terrorists and maintain order in the galaxy. Never forget the Death Star tragedy. The missions are a blast, the dogfighting a lot of fun, and the bonus missions make for some real challenges. By the time you get into the expansion battles, it does kind of drag (a lot of dogfighting multiple ships that are superior to yours), but all in all this classic holds up pretty well,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Reviewing games I played a long time ago: In my opinion this is the best of the series, even though I have a soft spot for the last instalment, X-Wing Alliance. The story, focused on the Empire was great at the time and overal this was a big step up from the original game in the series.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love this game. I played Xwing and TIE Fighter both as "new releases" ***BOOMER DETECTED*** and they really did it for me. Fast forward to now, and the games still have their original charm, since nobody bothered to make a modern SW combat sim. HOWEVER the game is JANK AS ♥♥♥♥ and will crash randomly. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My childhood in a nutshell and frankly still one of the greatest flight sims / star wars game in my books. I would not recommend playing the windows version that this one ships with. The collectors cd-rom is the superior version because of the Imuse system used for the music. Sure the dosbox emulation is not perfect and requires some tweaking to get it run somewhat smoothly though you probably still get fps drops when looking bigger ships but it is worth it. Plus you can play the dos version…
