STAR WARS™: Rogue Squadron 3D
Developer Factor 5, LucasArts
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron or Star Wars: Rogue Squadron 3D is an arcade-style flight action game co-developed by Factor 5 and LucasArts. The first of the Rogue Squadron trilogy, it was published by LucasArts and Nintendo and released for Microsoft Windows and Nintendo 64 in December 1998. The game's story was influenced by the Star Wars: X-wing – Rogue Squadron comics and is set in the fictional Star Wars galaxy,… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

Many players praise the game as a nostalgic classic that holds up well, especially with a controller. [1][2][3] Several reviewers report that the PC port has serious compatibility issues on modern systems, requiring workarounds. [4][5][6] Some players note that the game runs well on Steam Deck with Proton, despite being listed as unsupported. [7][8]

I liked Rogue Squadron back on the N64, so I decided to grab the PC version to check it out again. What's being sold is so non-functional that in order to reach a hypothetically playable point you need to grab like six things from third parties, including a version of direct X that can't be obtained from Microsoft anymore, so you need to go to some guy's google drive and hope that it's actually what you need instead …

BEWARE: this game does not run well on modern hardware. I followed multiple guides on how to get it to run on a windows 11 pc and none of it worked. The ingame settings dont do anything video wise to make it run, and overall it is a chore to attempt to get this game to run properly. It sucks too, this game is objectively great. But it suffers from the fact that it just cannot run on modern hardware well.

I used to play this game to death as a kid on my N64. I picked up this version on sale for a dollar and it played beautifully on my Steam deck! Stable framerate, no graphical bugs or glitches, music played as expected, and it was really easy to control and play. I gold medaled the game for the first time ever, and had a blast doing so. Highly recommend playing but with a controller! I didn't test keyboard/mouse but …

I remember having much trouble trying to run this game before, but this Steam version runs awesome on my Linux PC with perfect controller support! I've re-done the keybindings to fit me and it's fantastic. One of my favorite games from my childhood, I'm over the clouds having it on Steam!! Thank you!! :) About the game: - visuals are obviously outdated, maps are of limited size, etc., but enjoyable - the gameplay …

It works just fine on SteamOS. I am using GE-Proton and have zero graphical issues. Setting up controls is a bit of work (especially missing the Esc-button with the standard config). The game is in 4:3 (as it should be). The famous bug, where the ship flies away from the camera can be circumvented if you adjust the view at the begining of every level. This game is perfect for Steam Deck!

STAR WARS™: Rogue Squadron 3D sits at 67% positive across 181 opinionated reactions from 4 sources. Fresh or rotten — where do you land?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Many reviews compared Star Wars: Rogue Squadron to one of its inspirations, the Battle of Hoth flight combat level in Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire, considered one of that game's best elements. GamePro remarked that Rogue Squadron "enhanced the flight model with true pitch, roll, and bank mechanics". IGN praised its inclusion of "upgrades, more enemies, better sound, and stunning second-generation graphics". The Nintendo 64 version received mostly positive reviews, and received an aggregate score of 85% from both GameRankings and Metacritic. GamePro named it one of the best games released in 1998. In a 2008 retrospective, IGN's Levi Buchanan stated that the game revived the Star Wars…

neutral · AI labelView post →This Game needs a Remaster. I've got good memories of playing this on the Nintendo 64 or on the PC as a youngling. The Rogue Squadron Games were a lot of fun, and the only way to play it is on the N64, or a PC and it plays good with a controller. Here on Steam it had many flaws, the Starships are flying like someone moves a model spaceship with a wire, what looks really funny but doesn't help when your target janks constantly around and if you accelerate, the camera goes far away and you'r…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Plays well on Steam Deck despite being listed as unsupported currently. Running in GE-Proton8-27. Controls map pretty well by default to Joystick settings, and you can easily navigate the menus using the touch screen controls. Good stuff. There's a bug in this PC version where your ship can veer off and leave the camera behind, but you can easily rectify this by cycling through the different camera angles (pushing start on the Steam Deck).
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →No longer works on Windows 11... Even when launching as administrator with compatability mode. Broken product; crashes whenever starting the level (effectively making the game unplayable).
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tons of glitches and odd problems with this game on Windows 11. The camera tends to drift off-course unless you constantly change the camera angle at the start of every mission (hope your nostalgia doesn't recall the default camera too fondly, cause you definitely won't be using it), and major warping of the graphics and scenery. This is also an issue on Steam Deck, so I'm not completely sold it's a Windows 11 issue. There's ways to fix it, but when I have to download two programs to play it…

neutral · AI labelView post →This game, released in 1998, remains a classic space combat game. It immerses players in thrilling battles as Luke Skywalker leading Rogue Squadron against the Galactic Empire. Featuring a variety of spacecraft and iconic Star Wars locales, the game's graphics and sound design capture the essence of the series. While its controls are dated and it lacks multiplayer, Rogue Squadron 3D's engaging campaign and nostalgic charm ensure its enduring appeal.…

I have read the reviews and noticed that it cannot run on windows 11. I've heard from others that it is a absolutely stellar game, but one I will have to unfortunately pass on because of my hardware. kinda disappointed actually :/

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great classic, if you can get it working. Here's what I did: - Set EXEs to run in compatibility mode for Windows 98/ME - Set EXEs to run as administrator - Leave resolution at default - Keyboard and Mouse are terrible. Use a controller that Windows recognizes as an Xbox controller. You can use DS4Windows if you want to use a PS4 or PS5 controller, then select it as your joystick from the hardware options popup before starting the game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Incredible game just like it was on the N64. Most likely anybody that plays this is an older fella that wants the nostalgia, and it's worth it all the way. I played on Mouse & Keyboard, and I thought it was fine with the controls honestly, but I do see a lot of folks saying otherwise.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played the hell out of this game on the 64. So, of course, I was excited when I saw it was revamped and available on Steam. Man, was I disappointed. None of the controls do what they say they do - keyboard AND controller. Not only that, the game doesn't even recognize half my controller's shoulder buttons. This game is so broken and unplayable. I'm sticking to the original on my 64, and I HIGHLY suggest everyone else does, too. This game is an abomination. It completely ruins the good name of…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For anyone who played this game back in the day, it totally holds up! I've been obsessed for 10+ hours of gameplay and have no intention of stopping soon. Replayability is fairly high as you try to improve your performance for each mission and get higher medals. But anyone for whom nostalgia is not a factor might find this game a bit frustrating because of its high degree of difficulty, limited lives for each mission, and outdated graphics.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I loved this game as a kid and still come back to it every now and then. As for the visual glitches people encounter from running a 25 year old game on modern hardware, I found that the following works for me: 1. Limiting the monitor refresh rate to 60Hz seems to improve the jerky flying of allies and some of the TIE interceptors. 2. Press F1 in-game to fix the camera angle. This seems to fix the dreaded "flying away from the player" glitch (I understand this has something to do with the game…

It’s not about flipping switches; it’s about the pure, unadulterated skill of a combat pilot.
