What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 255 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (11,233 of 13,062 positive).
Players praise the Definitive Edition for uniting all expansions, updating visuals and performance, and keeping the original gameplay intact. [1][2][3] Some reviewers note bugs like broken pathing and missing victory cutscenes, though the latter was later fixed. [4][5][6] Many players appreciate the nostalgic value and recommend it to fans of classic RTS and Warhammer 40K. [7][8][9]

That's it? This is all the so-called 'definitive' edition can give us? There's a visual upgrade, and while it's not much, overall I'd consider it a slight improvement. Your UI doesn't take up half your screen anymore. You can now properly zoom your camera in and out and actually see the battlefield. The game is now 64-bit. It's nice and all I guess, but they're Quality-of-Life improvements at best, not something to …

This is what a Remaster should do: - Unite all the separate games under one title. - Bring back online capabilities for a classic game. - Update models, animations, cinematics and sound quality for the current era. - Do not remove features which the players love, rather add quality of life features they asked for. - KEEP modding capabilities, promote them even more! - Give COST DISCOUNTS to existing game owners …

Dawn of War – Definitive Edition is one of the elite RTS titles of the genre — full stop. It stands proudly alongside Company of Heroes, Age of Empires, and StarCraft II as a masterclass in design, pacing, and faction identity. I’ve played every campaign at least once, tried every faction in skirmish mode, and pushed this game from every angle. I wasn’t disappointed a single time. Each faction feels distinct without …

As a long-time player, I’ll say: it’s worth it, but not without some reservations. For anyone coming back after years away, or stepping into the franchise for the first time, the Definitive Edition delivers a great way to experience one of the most iconic RTS titles of its era, with modern compatibility and all content bundled. I had plenty of fun revisiting the campaigns, re-engaging with the factions, and simply …

Definitive Edition packages the original Dawn of War and its standalone expansions into one unified release and updates the codebase for modern hardware. The remaster adds an improved camera (allowing much wider zoom-out), higher-resolution assets and lighting tweaks, and a 64-bit executable to improve stability and modding potential. These changes are explicitly aimed at letting the game run reliably on …

Then I bought this game and my life has been a downward spiral ever since. Gateway drug into the Warhammer 40K universe, now remastered. 10/10 would ruin my life again.

The current vibe is thinking about Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun! ngl Boltgun was a tough game 😤 the game was filled to the brim with thrilling combat, and the levels were fun to explore, it was an awesome game! neutral · AI labelView post →I love Dawn of War with all my heart, have played all the games since I was little. However, the blatant lack of care and effort from the developers in this "Definitive Edition" is just too much to ignore. There are so many game breaking bugs that were introduced due to the new pathing system that can COMPLETELY change the outcome of a game, such as: -Units completely failing to teleport/jump and consuming the jump charge while staying at their original position, -Grenades not exploding 50% of…

positive · AI labelView post →If you’re unhappy with the Definitive Edition, do yourself a favour and get the UNIFICATION MOD Ever played Space Marines and wished you could actually play your favourite faction instead of just changing colours? Ever wanted real unit variety, expanded tech trees, or have insane late game units like Titans? This mod cooks with that You get access to around 19 new races and sub factions (25 total) instead of the base game’s 7, with way more troop trees and higher-tier units across the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →THE GAME: Warhammer 40,000 is a squad-level minatures game, which means it is about moving little men across a table which represents part of a planet and pretending that the little men are shooting and punching each other. positive · AI labelView post →I have played Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Soulstorm for years with a friend, and we know the game and AI very well. I was excited for the Definitive Edition, but honestly, it is disappointing. First, the Dark Eldar Dais of Destruction is heavily nerfed. In Soulstorm its laser was powerful, now it struggles to kill even basic units like builders. This completely ruins its purpose. Second, the AI is worse. Bots now build everything at the front of their base, get stuck more, and are…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The mad lads actually did it. As of today's patch (2.4.1), Dawn of War Definitive Edition is everything I wanted, plus some bonuses on top. Relic managed to multithread the 20 year old game. Meaning: Runs smoothly pretty much no matter what. Throw as many units and fancy modded FX at it as you want, framerate doesn't drop, doesn't even stutter. A momentous day for 40k and RTS: THE downside to Dawn of War 1, is no more.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I stopped playing after trying for a long time but the game skipping dialogues is getting ridiculus, Dark Crusade and Soulstorm campaign is unplayable if you want the dialogues, I love DoW and was really happy for this edition but until they fix the dialogue skipping so cant I recommend it, if they fix the problem I can change my review.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Now they are ruining the game with "balance" patches. This is the start of every multiplayer game death-spiral. Fixing bugs is great but the original game balance should be left alone. Protip: Do not EVER listen to the DoW community.

neutral · AI labelView post →Soulstorm used to be a great old game. The "remaster" has screwed up the entire AI. no matter the difficulty, AI will send 2-3 Relic units (player is limited to 1 ), and pop out their top tier troops every 2-3 seconds. Player has a troop population limit of 20 infantry / 20 vehicle (troops value range 1-4, vehicles 2-5, AI will send hundreds at you. just can't out damage them. Relic has jacked this "remaster" all up.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a pretty mixed bag of a situation to be honest. One the one hand; After goodguy SEGA got the rights from the demise of old Relic, released the game on Steam, and gave everyone who had the old-school box copy codes an online key for free Then later released an all-encompassing Anniversary Edition and also gave that away for free to anyone already owning the original Steam version And now this Definitive Edition, whilst not free, has a permanent 30% discount for Anniversary owners ON…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →every update they keep "rebalancing" (nerfing) all the factions and dont even give you the option to use balancing from the original games. the quality of life changes are nice (i'd even ignore the fact that they just lazily used AI to upscale all the ingame textures) but if you're switching from DoW classic to this its not going to play at all like the originals. you could argue that balancing is just one thing and that the positives outweigh the negatives, except that balancing makes up a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →With Games Workshop crapping all over their own IP's for the last decade its good to see this classic game is largely left intact. Folks complain about multiplayer and rightly so, but if you are after the original campaign and expansions to revisit a classic or try it out for the first time then you can't go wrong here.

neutral · AI labelView post →When Dawn of War: Definitive Edition was released, I was under the impression that the developers had no intention of trying to "balance" the game. It was unbalanced. Everyone knew that, and everyone who still loved it understood that. It didn't matter that the Imperial Guard were among the weakest factions--their play rate indicated that they were totally fine the way they were! When this game started getting minor adjustments to some units, it made some sense still. Due to the adjusted…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Victory cutscenes for the campaign are STILL not in this game as of 11/20/2025. This is unacceptable. In no universe should the "definitive" edition of a game be missing its campaign victory cutscenes. I'll happily change this to a thumb's up once they have corrected this. [Edit 12/16/2025] Victory cutscenes have been returned to the game, I can now happily recommend this game as a solid remaster.

The tutorial does the bare minimum.. it explains the basics of the combat, but not important things like how to increase unit cap and stuff. Since then I've been doing random skirmish matches against bots to try and get the hang of it. There's a lot of complexity. Each unit can have a few power weapons (which you pick) that can make a group more effective against a certain enemy…

This last patch 2.9.0 is an absolute slap to the face to any necrons player..
