What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 253 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (30,863 of 33,658 positive).
Players praise the combat and Warhammer 40K atmosphere, but note dated graphics and technical issues. [1][2][3][4] Some reviewers find the campaign short and repetitive, with limited enemy variety. [2][4][5][6] Many recommend buying on sale due to the high price and dead multiplayer. [7][8][9][10]

I want to recommend this but I just cant because of the price tag. Basically 4 hours of shoot and slash on the hardest difficulty and its over. Only buy on sale if its like 10 bucks. Fun but repetitive gameplay. Wish it had a bit more cutscenes and lore. Orcs are hilarious.

For context, I have 100% of the achievements in this game, and it took me nearly 90 hours to do so after grinding with three of my friends in multiplayer and Exterminatus modes. For the TLDR, this is the superior version of the first Space Marine game, and if you want some lore drops prior to Space Marine 2, this is the best way to do it. Other than the fact that many of the achievements are tied to modes with very …

My first Wahammer game. So yeah, it's another Gears of War clone but without a cover system. You fight Orks for 80 percent of the game and then palette swaps of Space Marines and Demons for the rest. Makes you kind of miss the Orks. I think the camera sucks and there's lots of samey environments. You go up the same elevators and walk down the same corridors a bunch of times. This game is really janky but it's never …

I'm not a Warhammer guy, barely played any of the games as none of them seemed too interesting to me. Played this because a friend got me Space Marine 2 and the story of the second game assumes you know what happened in this game. It's a good length (around 7ish hours), good story, super cool enemy designs. The BIGGEST element of the game is definitely the combat, though! It's SUPER fun and brutal, NEVER feels …

As a person who has recently become reinterested in W40K (tried Dawn of War back in 2015 but it didn't do it for me), Space Marine was a very enjoyable game to play through even though it was released almost 15 years ago. It seems to me the game was clearly inspired by Gears of War, and while not as good as the OG Gears of War trilogy, is not far behind. Space Marine introduces Demetrian Titus as the protagonist and …

85% of the 253 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine - Anniversary Edition. The complaint that keeps coming up: technical issues like crashes and bugs. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine received "mixed or average" reviews on Windows and PlayStation 3, while the Xbox 360 version received "generally favorable" reviews, according to review aggregator website Metacritic. IGN praised the re-creation of the Warhammer 40,000 universe and the variety in the enemy encounters. The A.V. Club gave the Xbox 360 version a B+, saying, "Fortunately, it isn't pure fan service: It offers a fast-paced, gory start to a promising new franchise." GamePro gave the game four stars out of five and complimented the visuals of the game and the blending of hack-and-slash and shooter gameplay, but criticized the campaign, claiming that it was linear and that some of the…

neutral · AI labelView post →It's a fun game, many mechanics to explore, intentional or unintentional. The skill ceiling is pretty high, but the game is definitely easier to understand from the start than space marine 2. I'd say it's pretty fun throughout most stages of progressing, doesn't get boring much. The campaign is also there, gets you familiar with different weapons, somewhat fun, though I've not played it much more than just finishing it once on normal mode. Exterminatus is pretty good, I'm personally not too…

neutral · AI labelView post →So I installed the game before jumping into SM2 to get a grasp of the story, so how does it hold up in 2026? Honestly, not bad. The graphics are definitely outdated, especially the scenery, its all low res gray. I only had two crashes and one soft lock, so not too bad overall. The gameplay still holds up nicely, and the hack-and-slash combat feels fluid. The weapons feel unique and useful, each shining in its own area, and experimenting with different combinations was surprisingly rewarding.…

positive · AI labelView post →Pretty fun game. One huge flaw it has is that the game can crash in different sections. On the 6th chapter I had a part where I just couldn’t get past a cutscene without crashing and it made my fans go crazy too. You need to play this by searching up a github fix, SpaceMarineCoreFix, put the file into the game folder, and it’ll likely fix everything. That aside, gameplay is great, story is interesting but doesn’t get in the way of the fun, and it’s just a decent game to play while chatting with…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game feels like stepping back into the Xbox 360 era. It gives strong Gears of War vibes with its easy combat, straightforward level design, and no-nonsense action. The graphics have definitely aged, but the gameplay still holds up. You genuinely feel like an unstoppable Space Marine, tearing through endless waves of Orks with a chainsword and bolter, and somehow it never gets old. I played the entire game on the Steam Deck, and it ran surprisingly well. It did crash twice late on (around…

The combat is fun, the pace is great, and it really nails the Warhammer feel early on. Unfortunately, around the 4–5 hour mark, the campaign takes a noticeable turn for the worse. The game starts heavily punishing melee play and executions, often resulting in insta-deaths mid-animation. On top of that, you’re constantly bombarded by endless rockets and bomb squigs that keep…
